Bakar, a city that for decades carried the stigma of heavy industry and ecological burden, is today decisively treading the path of transformation, revealing its new, greener face. On Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the very beginning of the calendar summer, the Bakar Bay once again became the stage for one of the most significant ecological initiatives in the region. The traditional annual underwater cleaning action, organized this year as part of the popular event "Margaretino leto" (Margaret's Summer), has once again confirmed the unwavering commitment of the local community to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. This event is far from a mere communal activity; it is a symbol of rebirth and a clear message about the direction in which Bakar wants to develop – as a place of sustainable coexistence between man and nature. If you are looking for accommodation in Bakar, you will witness this positive change firsthand.

Record turnout of volunteers from across the region

This year's action surpassed all expectations, gathering an impressive number of over 250 participants. In the romantic ambiance of the Bakar Bay, under ideal weather conditions, as many as 90 divers plunged into the depths of the bay to free it from its inherited burden. What is particularly fascinating is the volunteer spirit and enthusiasm that drives this initiative. Many participants traveled hundreds of kilometers, some up to 500, coming from various parts of Croatia, as well as neighboring countries like Slovenia, Italy, and Austria, just to contribute. This international dimension of the action shows that care for the environment knows no borders and that the Bakar Bay is recognized as a valuable natural resource whose preservation has a broader significance. The engagement of diving clubs and individuals from different countries creates a network of cooperation and friendship, founded on a common goal – a clean Adriatic Sea.

More than ten cubic meters of waste pulled from the sea

Unfortunately, the bottom of the Bakar Bay still hides the remains of some past, less environmentally conscious times. During the action, which lasted several hours, more than 10 cubic meters of various waste were pulled from the seabed. Divers brought everything to the surface, from small waste like glass and plastic bottles, to large pieces of metal, car tires, and discarded fishing gear. Every piece recovered is a testament to the long-standing industrial heritage and a time when awareness of the negative consequences of pollution was not at today's level. However, this picture also has its positive side. It shows that the problem is not only being recognized but is also being actively and systematically addressed. Actions like this are crucial for remediation, but also for raising public awareness about the importance of responsible behavior towards the marine ecosystem. Choosing apartments in Bakar allows you to explore the rich history and see the results of these commendable efforts.

Synergy as the key to success

Organizing such a demanding event would be impossible without the extraordinary cooperation and synergy of numerous stakeholders. The initiative was once again led by the famous underwater explorer Velimir Vrzić, whose passion for the sea and its preservation is contagious. Vrzić, a former maritime police officer, has dedicated his life to exploring and protecting the underwater world, and his projects regularly attract great public attention. Alongside him, the key organizers were local enthusiasts from the Sports Maritime Society "Luben" from Bakar, an institution with a long tradition. The entire project would not have been feasible without the strong support of the City of Bakar and the Tourist Board of the City of Bakar, who recognized the multiple values of this action – not only ecological but also promotional. Through such events, Bakar is profiling itself as a desirable destination for eco-tourism. Logistical and all other support was also provided by the Port Authority of Bakar-Kraljevica-Kostrena, the Lions Club Rijeka, and the Slovenian diving club Feel Deep, confirming the regional character of the cooperation. We must not forget the sponsors, led by Ina and Metis, who regularly support programs within the "Margaretino leto" event, thereby showing their social responsibility. Planning a holiday in Bakar during such events provides a unique insight into the spirit of community that drives this city.

Bakar on the path of ecological renaissance

While the divers were diligently cleaning the seabed, an atmosphere of community and optimism reigned on land. This action is much more than removing waste; it is an investment in the future, in a cleaner bay for future generations, and in a new perception of Bakar. The city is tirelessly fighting against the old image of a "black spot" on the Kvarner Gulf and is successfully building a new identity based on rich cultural heritage, maritime tradition, and, increasingly, on preserved nature. The enthusiasm, excellent organization, and visible results serve as an inspiration and proof that positive changes are possible when forces, knowledge, and goodwill unite. Bakar is well on its way to becoming an example of how industrial heritage can be transformed into a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

Environment & sustainability desk

The Environment and Sustainable Development Desk brings together authors and volunteers who have spent decades living close to nature, exploring ecological processes, and observing the changes that shape our planet. Behind every text stands the experience of people whose professional and personal paths have intertwined with topics such as environmental protection, renewable resources, climate challenges, and sustainable living. We write from the field, from conversations with researchers and activists, from our own notes and long-term observation, striving to ensure that each publication is both verified, understandable, and useful.

Our work is not based on superficial trends but on a real understanding of natural processes and the responsibility humans have toward the space in which they live. The stories we tell are created slowly, with much reflection, because we do not view ecology as a niche or a technical field but as a part of life that concerns all of us. Over the years, the editorial team has been following how the environment reacts to human habits, how communities introduce sustainable models, and how innovations merge with respect for natural cycles. We aim to bring all this closer to the reader in a form that is not dry but relatable and real.

We choose topics with particular care—topics that open space for understanding rather than fear. We write about climate change, but also about the people who find solutions. We speak about endangered natural areas, but also about those who restore them. We highlight the importance of sustainable development, but without grand words—preferring to share concrete experiences, small steps, and good practices we have witnessed during years of cooperation with ecological initiatives and experts.

Our goal is to build trust, not sensation. That is why we strive to ensure that every text is grounded in verified information and thoughtful journalistic work. We want to offer readers content that not only informs but also encourages understanding, responsibility, and care for the space we leave to future generations. The Environment and Sustainable Development Desk remains dedicated to this mission: to create content that reflects genuine passion for nature and contributes, even in a small way, to the greater picture—preserving what we all share.
