La Liga in Matchday 30: Getafe outplayed Athletic, Celta triumphed in Valencia, Oviedo brought down Sevilla

La Liga on Sunday delivered both goals and nerves: Getafe strengthened their European ambitions, Celta claimed a big win at Mestalla

Sunday's schedule of Matchday 30 in La Liga, played on 05 April 2026, brought four matches with very different consequences, but with one common feature: almost every team on the pitch was playing for something important. Getafe defeated Athletic Club 2:0 in front of their home fans and moved even closer to the battle for European places, Celta Vigo won 3:2 in Valencia in a match with multiple twists and a strong second half, Real Oviedo narrowly beat Sevilla 1:0 and kept their survival hopes alive, while Alavés and Osasuna drew 2:2 in Vitoria in a match that carried both competitive and psychological weight right until the very end.

This Sunday was therefore not just another standard league day. At the top end of the table, Getafe and Celta confirmed that they want to stay in the race for continental Europe, while at the bottom, Real Oviedo and Alavés were seeking points that mean much more than mere statistical addition. Osasuna and Sevilla, each in their own way, went home with the realization that they had missed an opportunity for a calmer end to the season. According to official La Liga data and the updated standings after those matches, Celta jumped to 44 points and remained in the zone that gives them real hope of European qualification, Getafe reached 41 points, Osasuna 38, Alavés 32, Sevilla stayed on 31, Valencia on 35, Athletic on 38, and Real Oviedo on 24 points, still in a difficult, but not hopeless, situation.

Getafe win again in their own way

The calmest result of the day was achieved by Getafe, but the match itself against Athletic Club was anything but insignificant. José Bordalás' team took the lead as early as the 14th minute when Luis Vázquez took advantage of a situation in the penalty area and scored for 1:0, and the job was finished in the closing stages, in the 90th minute, with a goal by Martín Satriano after an assist from Mario Martín. The 2:0 result looks routine at first glance, but the weight of that victory lies in the fact that Getafe used it to confirm the kind of continuity that is especially valued in the final stretch of the league: an organized defense, little space for the opponent, and enough sharpness in key moments.

The home victory gains additional weight from the manner in which it was achieved. According to reports after the match, Athletic Club once again showed weaknesses in attack, and the Spanish media particularly highlighted that the Basque team failed to seriously threaten Getafe's goal. In that framework, Bordalás' side looks like a team that does not win points by accident, but through planning, discipline, and a clear identity. Getafe, in turn, does not build its rise on spectacle, but on control of the tempo, solidity, and maximum use of chances, which at this stage of the season is often more decisive than impression.

That performance is very visible in the standings. With 41 points after 30 matches played, Getafe remained in the upper half of the table and stayed close enough to the European zone that their candidacy can no longer be viewed as a short-lived flash. In a competition in which several clubs are fighting for places leading to European competitions, every home win against a direct rival has double value. On the other hand, Athletic remained on 38 points and missed the opportunity to take a more serious step toward the top of mid-table. For a club that in recent seasons wanted more than mere peace, defeats like this in April begin to create pressure.

Celta silenced Mestalla with a comeback

The most exciting duel of the day was seen in Valencia, where Celta Vigo won 3:2 after a match in which the mood of the home fans changed from minute to minute. Valencia took the lead in the 12th minute with a goal by Guido Rodríguez after a corner, and it seemed that the Mestalla side might build a very important home result. However, the second half completely changed the course of the match. Ilaix Moriba equalized in the 56th minute, Fer López made it 2:1 in the 60th, and Williot Swedberg increased it to 3:1 in the 81st minute. Valencia only managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time, again through Guido Rodríguez, for the final 2:3.

That sequence of goals says a lot about the match itself. Valencia started the game well, had the support of packed stands and home momentum, but after the break they lost control of space and tempo. Celta, by contrast, looked increasingly confident as the match went on. According to the official match statistics, the team from Vigo had more possession and more shots on target, which was clearly felt in the period when the game was decided. Moriba's goal brought balance, Fer López hit the home side at the moment when a response was needed, and Swedberg completed the job at a stage when Valencia were already forced to open up and take risks.

For Celta, this is a victory with broader significance than just the three points. With 44 points after 30 rounds, the club strengthened its position in the upper part of the standings and remained in a very serious race for European places. In a league in which the gaps outside the leading duo are not unbridgeable, every away triumph against a mid-table team can carry great weight. That is exactly what Celta achieved at a stadium where such victories never come easily. For Valencia, meanwhile, the defeat is painful both because of the impression and the circumstances. After taking the lead and having home advantage, they were left empty-handed on 35 points, which means the end of the season will not be free of nerves.

It is particularly interesting that Celta reached victory thanks to a more pronounced performance in the second half, with contributions from several players in the finishing phase of attacks. That is often a sign of a team that does not depend only on one name, but can find solutions through different player profiles and through adjustment during the match. In the context of the fight for Europe, that is an important advantage, because the final part of the season rarely allows reliance on one pattern of play. In Valencia, Celta showed that they can survive the opening blow, wait for the right moment, and then in a short period completely change the picture of the match.

Real Oviedo seized their moment, Sevilla under pressure again

One of the results with the greatest symbolic weight was achieved by Real Oviedo, who defeated Sevilla 1:0 at the Carlos Tartiere stadium. The only goal was scored by Federico Viñas in the 32nd minute, with a header from close range after a cross by Alberto Reina from a corner. Although the result remained minimal, the match was neither simple nor calm. An important detail occurred in the 38th minute, when Tanguy Nianzou received a red card and left Sevilla with one player less, giving the home side additional room to control the match and preserve the lead.

For Real Oviedo, this victory means much more than one recorded triumph. The team remained at the bottom of the table, but moved to 24 points and kept at least theoretical hope that in the remaining eight rounds they can complicate the survival battle. At moments when seasons are sliding toward the finish, the psychological effect of such victories is often almost as important as the points effect. In front of their fans, the home side received confirmation that they have not yet given up, that they can take the scalp of a more established opponent, and that they still have a competitive response despite their difficult position.

Sevilla, on the other hand, suffered a blow that further complicates their season. The club remained on 31 points and continued living in a zone in which it is no longer just a matter of underachievement relative to ambitions, but also of the real need to avoid being dragged deeper into the lower half as soon as possible. The defeat in Oviedo hurts especially because it came against the team that had been bottom of the table before the round. Such defeats in April quickly change the tone of the whole season: from a discussion of missed expectations, it shifts to questions of stability, self-confidence, and the ability to win “must-have” points under pressure.

The match also showed how details decide the lower part of the table. One set piece, one goal, and one red card were enough to shape the entire encounter. Oviedo knew how to protect the advantage, while Sevilla did not find a clear enough response even when they needed to take risks. That is precisely why this result can have a prolonged effect on the following rounds as well: it gives the home side reason to believe, and opens new questions for the visitors about how to emerge from results instability.

Alavés and Osasuna shared the points in a match with two penalties

In Vitoria, a match was seen that remained open until the very end. Osasuna took the lead as early as the fourth minute through Valentin Rosier, Alavés equalized in the 44th minute with a goal by Toni Martínez, and the visitors took the lead again in the second half when Ante Budimir converted a penalty in the 80th minute for 2:1. The home side, however, did not go unrewarded: after a VAR review and an awarded penalty, Lucas Boyé made it 2:2 in the 90th minute. The finale thus confirmed the impression that this was a match in which neither side managed to take complete control.

Osasuna will probably regret the missed opportunity because of the way events developed. They led twice, had a result that until the closing stages was bringing them all three points and another calmer step toward a safer mid-table position. Instead, they returned home with only a point and 38 points in total. Alavés, on the other hand, took a point that may not look big on paper, but in the fight for survival it may have considerable value precisely because it was won in circumstances in which a complete loss of the spoils was threatening. The home team are now on 32 points and remain above the relegation zone, although without room for relaxation.

Matches like these often best illustrate the stress of the lower part of the table. Teams play under pressure in every detail, so even a minor mistake can change the entire outcome. Two penalties, an early lead, a late equalizer, and a nervous finish showed how costly every point is at this stage of the season. Osasuna can point to attacking efficiency and the fact that they found the way to the lead twice, but Alavés will see that draw as a sign of resilience. It is precisely such resilience that often decides who will stay above the line in May.

What the results mean for the rest of the season

The Sunday outcome of Matchday 30 did not directly decide any battle, but it made several stories clearer. Celta and Getafe confirmed that they are not passing participants in the fight for places leading to Europe. Their victories were not the same in style, but they were in effect: both came against opponents who also had something to lose, and both were achieved at the moment when the season is breaking. That gives such results additional value. In April, not only points are counted anymore, but also the messages teams send to the rest of the league. Getafe sent the message that their solidity must be taken very seriously, and Celta that they can also win big away matches.

At the bottom of the table, the story is even tenser. Real Oviedo remain in a difficult position, but with the victory against Sevilla they showed that the mathematical battle is still ongoing. Alavés won a point that keeps them above the immediate line of greatest danger, while Sevilla after another stumble can no longer count on reputation as protection from an unpleasant end to the season. Valencia and Athletic also missed opportunities to position themselves more steadily in mid-table, so their finish will almost certainly remain under scrutiny.

For neutral observers, this was a day that confirmed one of the constant values of the Spanish league: outside the very top of the table, the gaps are small enough that one weekend can significantly change the tone of the entire season. For clubs, coaches, and fans, that means there is almost no room left for calculations. Every next match will be less and less a story about potential, and more and more about concrete performance. That is exactly why Sunday, 05 April 2026, will be remembered as a day on which some clubs strengthened belief in their goals, while others were left facing the uncomfortable reality that the season can no longer be fixed with promises, but only with points.
