Commemoration of the 92nd anniversary of the Velebit Uprising, an important historical moment symbolizing the struggle of the Croatian people against monarchist and Serbian repression in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, will take place on September 6, 2024, at several key locations. The events will begin in Brušane, a place that was the site of an armed uprising back in 1932, when Croatian insurgents attacked the gendarmerie station. Although this uprising did not lead to major military successes, its significance is considerable in terms of political impact, both domestically and abroad.
Brušane – 10:00
The ceremony will start at the monument to the Velebit Uprising of 1932 in Brušane. At this location, there will be commemorative speeches, and among the speakers will be the prefect of the Lika-Senj County, Ernest Petry, who will recall the importance of this historical event. The commemoration, including the laying of wreaths and lighting of candles, is held in honor of those who contributed to the fight against the then royal dictatorship.
Jadovno (Krč) – 11:00
At the site of the memorial cross dedicated to the Velebit insurgents, the commemoration continues in the hamlet of Krč, where the grave of Stjepan Devčić, the first victim of this uprising, is also located. This part of the program is an opportunity to remember the victims who fell in the struggle against Greater Serbian hegemony, and the speech will be delivered by Ivan Paradžik, President of the Croatian National Council. These events pay tribute to the brave individuals who opposed the then tyranny.
Brušane – 12:30
The final part of the program will take place in the Church of St. Martin in Brušane, where attendees will be able to participate in spiritual activities led by Rev. Herbert Berisha, the parish priest from Brušane. This spiritual component, called "Velebit Feast," connects history and faith, allowing participants to understand the broader significance of this historical event through prayer and reflection.
The historical importance of the Velebit Uprising is reflected not only in its symbolic significance but also in the fact that this event had a major international impact. The uprising was a reaction to the policy of King Alexander, and foreign media, especially in Italy and Hungary, supported this act of resistance as an expression of the Croatian people's will for freedom. Although the uprising did not lead to significant military successes, it was an important step towards strengthening national consciousness and the struggle for Croatian independence, which later resulted in the creation of the modern Croatian state.
