Serious traffic accidents in Lika-Senj County over the past weekend resulted in serious injuries

Over the past weekend, 32 traffic accidents were recorded in the area of the Lika-Senj Police Department. Four people were seriously injured, ten people received minor injuries, while the remaining accidents caused material damage.

During the past weekend, the Lika-Senj Police Department recorded a total of 32 traffic accidents. Of these accidents, four resulted in serious injuries for the participants, ten people sustained minor injuries, while the remaining accidents caused material damage.

Serious traffic accident in Lukovo Šugarje
On Friday, July 19, 2024, around 6:45 a.m., a serious traffic accident occurred on state road number 8 in Lukovo Šugarje. A 44-year-old German citizen, driving a car with German license plates, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a vehicle registered in Gospić, driven by a 28-year-old man from Lukovo Šugarje. In this accident, the driver and a 29-year-old passenger were seriously injured, while a 54-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. The driver of the German car was also slightly injured, as were two passengers in his vehicle, aged 23 and 19.

Motorcyclist injured in Balenska Draga
Also on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 10:55 a.m., a traffic accident occurred on state road number 8 in Balenska Draga, Senj area, involving a 48-year-old Austrian motorcyclist. While entering a left curve, the motorcyclist veered to the right, hit the guardrail and a stone pillar, and then fell onto the roadway. Parts of the motorcycle struck a car with Pula license plates driven by a 34-year-old woman from Rijeka. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was retained for treatment at KBC Rijeka.

Traffic accident on highway A-1 near Gospić
On Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., a multi-vehicle collision occurred on highway A-1 near Gospić. The accident was caused by a 35-year-old Austrian citizen driving a car with Austrian license plates who did not maintain a sufficient distance between vehicles. He struck the rear of a car with German license plates driven by a 31-year-old German citizen. This vehicle then hit another car with German license plates driven by a 26-year-old German citizen. In this accident, a child who was a passenger in the Austrian-registered car was seriously injured.

In addition to the aforementioned serious accidents, six traffic accidents with minor injuries were recorded. In the Gospić area, two people were slightly injured in two separate accidents. In Novalja, three people were slightly injured in two accidents. One person was slightly injured in accidents in Korenica and Otočac.

The remaining traffic accidents caused material damage. In the Otočac area, eight such accidents were recorded, six in Gospić, six in Novalja, one in Senj, and two in Karlobag.

According to the report, there is a need for increased traffic monitoring and raising awareness about road safety. The police are urging drivers to comply with traffic regulations, maintain a safe distance between vehicles, and adjust their speed to road conditions to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

According to statistics, the most common causes of traffic accidents include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicants, and driver inattentiveness. The police will continue to conduct regular checks to increase the safety of all road users.
