On Monday, August 26, 2024, shortly after 2 p.m., a traffic accident occurred on Slavonska Avenue in Zagreb involving two passenger vehicles. The accident happened on a section of the road known for heavy traffic, which further complicates driving conditions, especially during the ongoing roadworks on that avenue.

The 45-year-old driver, who was driving a car with Zagreb registration plates, did not adjust her speed to the road conditions. As a result, her car hit the rear of the vehicle driven by a 44-year-old driver, also from Zagreb. According to reports, the accident occurred due to unfavorable traffic conditions on the road, as reconstruction work was taking place on the overpass on Slavonska Avenue at that time, causing additional congestion and reduced traffic flow.

What is particularly concerning in this situation is that the second driver, a 23-year-old woman, was under the influence of alcohol, with a measured level of 2.18 g/kg. Such a high level of alcohol in the blood significantly impairs the driver's ability to react appropriately to traffic situations, which in this case led to severe consequences.

After the accident, the police conducted an investigation and immediately arrested the driver. She was then taken to the Municipal Misdemeanor Court in Zagreb, where she was fined. The court imposed a fine of 1,580 euros and a one-month driving ban. In addition, the driver was also given negative points on her driving record, indicating the seriousness of the offense.

This case further highlights the issue of driving under the influence of alcohol, which remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in Croatia. Despite stricter penalties and growing awareness of the dangers, many drivers still do not follow the rules, leading to tragic consequences.

Roadworks on Slavonska Avenue, which began a few weeks before this accident, continue, with temporary traffic regulation creating additional challenges for drivers. The police are urging all road users to adjust their speed to the road conditions and to pay special attention to areas where roadworks are taking place to avoid similar accidents in the future.
