To ensure safer participation in traffic, we urge all drivers and other road users to strictly adhere to all traffic regulations. Drivers are especially advised to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and to adjust their speed and driving style to the current road conditions.

Preventive and repressive actions carried out
Over the past weekend, targeted actions were carried out with the aim of improving road safety. These actions were focused on identifying and sanctioning drivers who exceeded the speed limit, drove under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or did not use seat belts.

Results of actions and sanctions
The results of the action show that a total of 15 speeding violations, 5 violations for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 15 violations for not using seat belts were recorded. The highest concentration of alcohol in a driver was recorded in Štikada, on Sunday, August 4, 2024. In that incident, a 29-year-old driver from Štikada, driving a car registered in Gospić, was under the influence of alcohol with a measured 1.64 g/kg. The driver, whose driver's license had previously been revoked due to accumulated negative points, lost control of the vehicle. On that occasion, the car ran off the road, hit a traffic sign, and stopped in the vegetation. Fortunately, no one was injured in this traffic accident. The driver was arrested and brought before the competent court, where he was detained.

Dangers of overconfidence
Excessive confidence in one's driving skills can be extremely dangerous. Compliance with traffic regulations is crucial for preventing accidents and protecting human lives.

Traffic accident statistics
In the area of the Lika-Senj Police Department, 42 traffic accidents were recorded over the weekend. One person died, while three people were seriously injured, and six people suffered minor injuries. The collision between the motorcycles resulted in the death of the Slovenian citizen, while the 26-year-old motorcycle driver and a 41-year-old passenger were seriously injured.

- On Monday, August 5, 2024, on state road number 547, an accident occurred in which a minor cyclist lost control of the bicycle coming out of a sharp curve and fell onto a grassy area. The cyclist was seriously injured.

Improving road safety
Despite the challenges, Croatia continues to work on improving road safety through various measures, including stricter laws and penalties for offenders, infrastructure improvements, and increasing public awareness of the importance of traffic safety. According to data, Croatia recorded 78 deaths per million inhabitants in 2023, indicating the need for further improvements in safety standards. Through initiatives such as road improvements, the use of advanced technologies, and educational campaigns, the goal is to significantly reduce the number of accidents by 2030.
