In the heart of the Adriatic archipelago, on the island of Lošinj, a two-day ecological campaign named “More zna, otok pamti” was held, during which more than 3.260 kilograms of waste from the marine subsoil and coastal area were collected. This extensive initiative was held on April 5 and 6, 2025, and the gathering of such a large number of enthusiasts and professionals once again demonstrated the strength of collective environmental care.

Significant response from divers and volunteers

More than 100 divers from Croatia and abroad – including participants from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany – joined forces with hundreds of volunteers and local residents to clean the subsoil and coastal areas of Mali Lošinj, Nerezina, Susak and Srebrna uvala in the Čikat region. The participants operated at five key locations: the port of Mali Lošinj, the small ports of Biskupija and Ufratar in Nerezina, the port of Susak and Srebrna uvala.

The power of solidarity and local cooperation

The campaign organizers, the diving center SUBSEASON and Institut Plavi svijet, once again demonstrated the importance of long-term commitment to marine and environmental protection. The president of Institut Plavi svijet, Jelena Basta, emphasized that this initiative gathers an increasing number of participants every year and becomes a model for other Adriatic communities. She also pointed out that this year’s edition is part of the European Commission’s campaign “European Maritime Day in My Country”, which promotes the preservation of the marine environment and sustainable use of marine resources.

Ecological approach to tourism

Among the project partners, the company Jadranka turizam d.o.o. once again stood out, actively participating in the campaign through its camps and hotel capacities. Dejan Jakovljević, the executive director of the camps, stressed the importance of sustainable business practices that form the basis of this company’s strategy. The role of Jadranka turizam in preserving the natural heritage of Lošinj was further confirmed by Ante Vranješ, director of corporate functions and ESG, emphasizing that environmental care is deeply integrated into the company’s business culture.

Support from the local community

The director of the Tourist Association of the City of Mali Lošinj, Dalibor Cvitković, proudly stated that Lošinj, as one of the world’s Top 100 green destinations, continuously works on environmental preservation through education, raising ecological awareness and concrete field actions. The involvement of numerous local institutions, associations and companies is further evidence of the importance of synergy among all stakeholders in the protection of natural resources.

Organization and logistics

The campaign was implemented with the support of the City of Mali Lošinj, the Tourist Association of the City of Mali Lošinj, the companies Losinj Hotels & Villas, Jadranka turizam – Jadranka kampovi and Jadranka trgovine, as well as Komunalne usluge Cres-Lošinj, the County Port Authority of Mali Lošinj and other local stakeholders such as the Port Captaincy, the diving center Top Dive, Ambroza Haračić High School, the Community Service Center and numerous sports and fishing associations.

Comparison with last year

This year’s campaign success is even more striking compared to last year’s result when, during a similar campaign, more than 10 cubic meters of waste were removed thanks to the collective engagement of 200 participants. This year, the number of participants has risen to 224 and the amount of waste removed exceeded that of 2024, clearly demonstrating growing awareness and increasing community involvement in protecting the sea and the coast.

Accommodation and infrastructure on Lošinj

For all visitors and participants of the eco-campaign, Lošinj offered quality accommodation through numerous camps, hotels and private apartments. The island is known for its rich tourist offer and excellent infrastructure, and besides attracting tourists with its natural beauty, it increasingly motivates them with its sustainable initiatives. Significant efforts have been invested in maintaining the cleanliness of beaches, promenades and the subsoil, making it one of the most desirable eco-conscious destinations in the Adriatic.

Message to future generations

This great eco-campaign is not only an act of cleaning but also a powerful message to future generations about the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem. By participating in such initiatives, citizens, tourists and institutions actively contribute to creating a healthier environment, and Lošinj is positioning itself as a leading example of responsible tourism and ecological awareness.

Environment & sustainability desk

The Environment and Sustainable Development Desk brings together authors and volunteers who have spent decades living close to nature, exploring ecological processes, and observing the changes that shape our planet. Behind every text stands the experience of people whose professional and personal paths have intertwined with topics such as environmental protection, renewable resources, climate challenges, and sustainable living. We write from the field, from conversations with researchers and activists, from our own notes and long-term observation, striving to ensure that each publication is both verified, understandable, and useful.

Our work is not based on superficial trends but on a real understanding of natural processes and the responsibility humans have toward the space in which they live. The stories we tell are created slowly, with much reflection, because we do not view ecology as a niche or a technical field but as a part of life that concerns all of us. Over the years, the editorial team has been following how the environment reacts to human habits, how communities introduce sustainable models, and how innovations merge with respect for natural cycles. We aim to bring all this closer to the reader in a form that is not dry but relatable and real.

We choose topics with particular care—topics that open space for understanding rather than fear. We write about climate change, but also about the people who find solutions. We speak about endangered natural areas, but also about those who restore them. We highlight the importance of sustainable development, but without grand words—preferring to share concrete experiences, small steps, and good practices we have witnessed during years of cooperation with ecological initiatives and experts.

Our goal is to build trust, not sensation. That is why we strive to ensure that every text is grounded in verified information and thoughtful journalistic work. We want to offer readers content that not only informs but also encourages understanding, responsibility, and care for the space we leave to future generations. The Environment and Sustainable Development Desk remains dedicated to this mission: to create content that reflects genuine passion for nature and contributes, even in a small way, to the greater picture—preserving what we all share.
