As summer slowly says goodbye and the days become milder, the town of Krk is preparing for its sweetest festival. From today, August 22, until the last day of the month, August 31, 2025, the town's streets, squares, and restaurants will become the stage for the nineteenth edition of the Fig Days event. Organized by the Krk Tourist Board, this event, already deeply woven into the island's tradition, will once again celebrate the fig – a fruit that is more than just a fruit; it is a symbol of the Mediterranean, heritage, and the life that has nourished generations of islanders for centuries. This year, the event holds special significance as it perfectly fits into the story of Kvarner as the European Region of Gastronomy 2026, further confirming Krk's status as a destination where authentic tradition and contemporary gastronomic expressions meet in perfect harmony.

The Fig: More than a fruit, a symbol of life and well-being

The fig is not just a summer treat; it is a cultural and historical treasure of the Mediterranean. It is considered one of the first plants cultivated by man, and its presence in diet and customs dates back thousands of years. In many ancient cultures, from Greece to Rome, the fig was a symbol of fertility, peace, and prosperity. Its ability to grow on barren, rocky soil, drawing life from the sun and the earth, makes it a perfect metaphor for the resilience and vitality of the island people. Nutritionally extremely rich, full of fiber, calcium, potassium, and magnesium, the fig was a key source of energy and health. Through the Fig Days, the town of Krk celebrates not only its taste but also its deep-rootedness in the island's identity, paying tribute to the tree that has nourished and preserved life through the ages.

A rhapsody of flavors on Krk's piazzas

The central part of the event, as every year, belongs to gastronomy. For ten days, fourteen catering establishments throughout the town will transform their menus into creative tributes to the fig. Culinary masters from restaurants and taverns compete in imagination, offering a range of dishes that push the boundaries of expectation. The offer is diverse and enticing, designed to satisfy even the most demanding palates. For lovers of traditional flavors, there are dishes like rustic porchetta, slow-roasted with aromatic herbs and the sweetness of figs. Elegant bruschettas with creamy burrata, salty prosciutto, and dried figs offer the perfect start to a meal. Unavoidable are the homemade šurlice, served in a delicate sauce with shrimp and fresh figs or in a bolder combination with gorgonzola. The main courses are a true demonstration of culinary skill: juicy pork fillet in a rich sauce of red wine and figs, tender loin served on a puree with a fig sauce, or a lavish steak in a sauce of Adriatic shrimp and figs. A more modern approach is visible in offerings like the "Smokvica" pizza or gourmet burgers with a special fig sauce. The sweet part of the story offers even greater temptation: from the classic creme brulee enriched with figs, tiramisu, and panna cotta with homemade jam, to crostatas, crumbles, and waffle baskets filled with a fine cream of fig and pistachio. Of course, there are also simple yet perfect pancakes with homemade jam and refreshing, artisanal fig ice cream. Every bite at the Fig Days tells a new story about this versatile fruit.

The creative heart of the event next to Veli Park

From Friday, August 29, to Sunday, August 31, the area next to Veli Park will be transformed into a lively center of events. From 10 AM to 10 PM, a sales exhibition of fig products will be held there, a real treasury for all lovers of authentic island products. At the stands of local family farms and small producers, visitors will be able to find fresh and dried figs, as well as products created with much love and knowledge. The traditional smokvenjak stands out, an energy cake made of ground dried figs, almonds, and brandy, which was once the food of laborers and is today a prized delicacy. Alongside it, there are various jams, marmalades, sweet spreads, and even natural cosmetics based on figs and original, handmade souvenirs.
In parallel with the exhibition, a series of free creative workshops for all generations will be held. In the "The Leaf That Protects" workshop, participants will decorate canvas bags by printing real fig leaves, creating a unique and wearable souvenir. The "Fig Medallion" workshop offers the opportunity to work with modeling clay, where participants can shape tiles and impress fig motifs into them, creating unique jewelry or wall decorations. For the youngest, as well as adults, there is the always-popular workshop of making figs from clay. Special attention is also paid to preserving the tradition of felting Krk wool – children will make cute fig-shaped pendants, while for adults, a workshop on making unique earrings is prepared.

A fusion of knowledge, art, and music

The educational segment of the event brings an expert lecture by Assoc. Prof. Željko Prgomet, PhD, one of the leading authorities on the cultivation of Mediterranean crops. On Friday, August 29, in the Small Town Hall, he will give a lecture on the topic "Pruning Fig Trees – from planting to full fruition", providing valuable advice to everyone who wants to grow this noble fruit in their gardens. On the same day, during the morning, Assoc. Prof. Prgomet will also be available for individual consultations along with the distribution of fig seedlings.
For artistic souls, a special experience is reserved for Sunday, August 31 – the popular Art & Wine workshop. Under the expert guidance of Alenka Goldner Sučić, a professor of art, participants will create their own works of art with a glass of top-quality Krk wine. In the relaxed atmosphere of the Small Town Hall, with no need for prior painting experience, they will paint with acrylics on canvas, and the motif will, of course, be the fig, an eternal inspiration for artists.
A musical backdrop will complete the evening atmosphere in the old town core. On Friday, August 29, Vela placa will resonate with the sounds of traditional klapa singing with a performance by klapa Rašketa. Saturday evening, August 30, brings a performance by the esteemed klapa Tramuntana on the picturesque Kamplin Square, providing the perfect end to a day filled with flavors, scents, and creativity.

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
