Međimurje is joining the European network of pilgrimage routes, thereby further enriching its tourist and cultural offer. A new chapter for lovers of active tourism and spiritual journeys will officially begin on March 22nd and 23rd, 2025, when the event "Camino Međimurje weekend" will take place. This pilgrimage route is not only an opportunity for physical activity, but also a way for participants to connect with the rich history and cultural heritage of this part of Croatia.

Opening and plan for the first day

The event will begin on March 22nd with the gathering of pilgrims in front of St. James' Church in Prelog at 6:30 AM. Shortly thereafter, at 7:00 AM, a solemn Mass will be held, marking the beginning of a journey inspired by the centuries-old tradition of pilgrimage. After the Mass, visitors will be able to explore a special Camino exhibition at the Croata Insulanus Museum of the City of Prelog, which will further highlight the significance and history of the Camino routes across Europe.

Route and key points of the Camino Međimurje route

The new route is approximately 100 kilometers long and represents a fusion of natural beauty, sacred architecture, and cultural heritage. It begins in Ludbreg, connecting with the Camino Podravina route, and then passes through Donja Dubrava, Prelog, and Čakovec all the way to Varaždin. An alternative route leads from Čakovec towards the Slovenian Camino network through the municipalities of Sveti Juraj na Bregu and Štrigov, allowing pilgrims to connect with the international segments of this well-known pilgrimage path.

Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to visit many sacred sites, historical landmarks, and natural attractions. Among the key points are St. James' Church in Prelog, the Franciscan Monastery in Čakovec, and numerous viewpoints offering stunning panoramic views of the Međimurje landscape.

Cultural and spiritual experience

Camino Međimurje is not only a walking route, but also a path to spiritual renewal and cultural exploration. Passing through traditional Međimurje villages, pilgrims will have the chance to experience local customs, taste indigenous cuisine, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this region. Local hospitality providers have ensured that participants are offered the best of Međimurje cuisine, including specialties such as Međimurje gibanica, perkelt with homemade trganci, and various types of indigenous wines.

Accommodation and logistical support

To ensure the pilgrimage experience is as pleasant as possible, various accommodation options are available along the route – from family guesthouses to hotels offering comfortable conditions for rest. Many establishments also provide special amenities for pilgrims, including breakfasts suited for long walks and the possibility to wash clothes after a strenuous day. Additionally, in larger settlements, transportation services are available for those in need of logistical support.

Touristic potential and significance of the project

By including Međimurje in the network of Camino routes, a range of opportunities for tourism development is opened, not only among domestic guests but also among international visitors seeking authentic experiences. Such routes are gaining increasing popularity in Europe, and Camino Međimurje will join destinations that annually attract thousands of travelers from around the world.

The project is carried out in cooperation with local and international organizations dedicated to preserving and developing the Camino tradition. In addition to promoting active tourism, Camino Međimurje also represents an opportunity for local communities to participate in creating content that will further enrich the pilgrim experience.

Registrations and participation

All interested parties can register through the organizer's official website and secure their spot in advance for this pilgrimage journey.
