Benfica confirmed the clause amount: Real Madrid must pay 15 million euros for Mourinho

On June 4, 2026, Benfica confirmed that José Mourinho's possible departure to Real Madrid would have a clearly established price: 15 million euros. According to the Lisbon club's notice, Florentino Pérez's candidacy for the presidential election at Real Madrid expressed a firm intention to hire the Portuguese coach if Pérez wins the election scheduled for June 7. In that case, Benfica states, the compensation clause from the current sporting contract would be activated, and the Madrid club would have to pay the amount corresponding to the currently valid terms of Mourinho's departure.

This gave one of the most important coaching stories ahead of the summer transfer window a financial and institutional framework. Mourinho's return to the Santiago Bernabéu has not yet been completed because it depends on the outcome of the election at Real Madrid, but Benfica's statement confirmed that the scenario is concrete enough to be formally reported to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, namely the Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM). The Lisbon club, as a company whose securities are traded on the market, must publish such information when it may affect business operations or investor expectations.

According to available information, Mourinho is tied to Benfica by a contract that also covers the 2026/27 season, but his arrangement included exit mechanisms after the end of the season. The Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that the earlier, more favorable option amounted to seven million euros and was valid within ten working days after the end of the championship. Since that option was not used, according to the same source, the termination price rose to 15 million euros, the amount Benfica now cites as the current clause.

The elections at Real Madrid determine the pace of the deal

The key reason why the deal cannot be viewed solely as a sporting agreement is the electoral calendar at Real Madrid. According to the club's electoral commission announcement, voting for the president and board of directors will take place on June 7, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the basketball hall at the Ciudad Real Madrid complex in Valdebebas. Real Madrid's official documents state that the electoral process was launched in May and that, in the event of multiple valid candidacies, the date and place of voting are determined.

Real Madrid has also confirmed in official announcements the candidacy of Enrique José Riquelme Vives, meaning the elections are not reduced to a mere formality. According to reports by Spanish media and his own candidacy, Pérez has positioned Mourinho as one of the central names of his campaign. Therefore, Mourinho's possible return is treated not only as a matter of coaching choice, but also as a political message within a club where presidential programs often include major sporting decisions.

Benfica's statement is additionally important because it separates speculation from formally reported conditions. It does not claim that Mourinho has already taken over Real Madrid, but that the appointment would be carried out if Pérez wins and if the agreed clause is activated. Such wording leaves room for the electoral outcome, but confirms that the financial architecture of the potential transfer of the coach is already known. For Real Madrid, this means that Mourinho's return, if it materializes, would begin with a direct cost of 15 million euros to Benfica, independently of his salary and the costs of his new coaching staff.

Why the clause grew from the earlier seven to 15 million euros

According to A Bola, the original mechanism in Mourinho's contract allowed him to leave Benfica at a significantly lower price if a certain deadline was met immediately after the end of the championship. That deadline expired before Real Madrid could complete its own electoral process, so the deal moved into a more expensive phase. That is why 15 million euros is now being mentioned, an amount described in Portuguese reports as the value of the remaining year of Mourinho's contract.

Such a change does not necessarily have to stop Real Madrid, but it changes the calculation. For a club used to major player transfers, an amount of 15 million euros is not unusual within a broader budget, but for a coach it represents a significant initial cost. In the context of a presidential campaign, this cost can also be interpreted as an indicator of how much Pérez is willing to invest in the symbolic return of a coach who has already worked in Madrid. On the other hand, for Benfica the clause is protection against the departure of a coach under contract and a possible source of funds for the transfer window.

Benfica, meanwhile, has not left the impression in the public sphere that it wants to negotiate below the contracted price. Its announcement explicitly states the amount and connects it to the valid employment contract. In doing so, the Lisbon club is sending a message that the possibility of Mourinho's departure will proceed through formal channels, and not as an undefined political or media announcement from Madrid. Such a position is also important because of Benfica's fans, who ended the season with an unusual combination of competitive pride and frustration.

Mourinho's season in Lisbon: unbeaten in the league, but without the title

Mourinho arrived at Benfica in September 2025, after the club announced negotiations and then his appointment. The return to Lisbon carried strong symbolism because it was at Benfica in 2000 that his path as a head coach began, before he later gained a European reputation at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and other clubs. In the 2025/26 season, he led a team that finished the Portuguese championship without defeat, but still did not win the title.

According to the 2025/26 season tables, Porto finished first with 88 points, Sporting second with 82, and Benfica third with 80 points. Such an outcome explains why Mourinho's league season was at the same time statistically impressive and competitively insufficient for the club's standards. According to available tables, Benfica recorded 23 wins and 11 draws, without defeat, but the large number of drawn matches opened space for Porto and Sporting to pull away in the fight for the top.

For Benfica, third place also has a European consequence. The Guardian stated in a report on Marco Silva's departure from Fulham that Benfica, after finishing third under Mourinho, should enter the Europa League qualifiers. This further clarifies why the coach's departure, despite an unbeaten league season, could be more acceptable than it might seem at first glance. According to everything available, the club will have to simultaneously deal with the issue of a new coaching staff, European qualifiers and building the team for the 2026/27 season.

Marco Silva as the most likely successor in Lisbon

Benfica, according to reports by British and Portuguese media, is already preparing for the possibility that Mourinho will leave for Madrid. At the forefront is Marco Silva, the Portuguese coach who left Fulham after five years. On June 2, The Guardian reported that Fulham had confirmed Silva's departure and that Benfica was interested in him at a time when Mourinho's possible move to Real Madrid is expected.

Silva's profile fits part of Benfica's needs. He arrived at Fulham in 2021, after the club's relegation from the Premier League, and immediately returned it to the elite tier of English football. According to The Guardian's report, Fulham under him twice in a row finished 11th in the Premier League, achieved a club record of 54 points in the 2024/25 season and reached 15 wins in a single Premier League season three times. Such results do not carry the weight of trophies, but they show continuity of work, stabilization of the team and the ability to manage a club in an extremely demanding league.

For Silva, Benfica would mean a return to Portuguese football and the possibility of working in European competitions. The Guardian states that Fulham failed to qualify for Europe, while the Lisbon club, despite third place, would have a continental path through qualifiers. For Benfica, appointing Silva would be an attempt to quickly reduce uncertainty if Mourinho leaves. In that sense, it is clear why the club is simultaneously dealing with both the legal terms of Mourinho's exit and the succession plan on the bench.

A return to the Bernabéu would carry strong symbolism

If the deal is completed, Mourinho would return to the club he managed from 2010 to 2013. During that period, Real Madrid won La Liga in 2011/12, the Copa del Rey in 2010/11 and the Spanish Super Cup in 2012, which is also confirmed by Real Madrid's official trophy overview. His first spell was competitively important because it took place during a period of direct rivalry with Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, but it was also controversial because of tensions in the dressing room and in public.

Mourinho left a deep mark in Madrid, but not a simple legacy. For some fans, he remained the coach who restored intensity and competitive aggression to duels with Barcelona, while others associate him with a period of conflict, sharp rhetoric and divisions. That is exactly why his return, more than a decade after his departure, would be a politically and sportingly powerful move. Pérez would thereby signal that he wants an experienced coach with authority, rather than a long-term building project with a less familiar name.

On the other hand, Real Madrid would have to weigh what Mourinho's return means for the dressing room, the development of young players and the style of play. The football context of 2026 is different from that of 2010, and expectations regarding high pressing, possession, physical intensity and managing stars have changed further. Mourinho still carries the status of one of the most decorated coaches of the modern era, but his second arrival in Madrid, if it happens, would not be merely a nostalgic return. It would be a test of whether the same coach can offer solutions in a substantially different environment for a club seeking a new impulse.

Uncertainty remains until the vote

Until the polls close on June 7, the entire deal remains conditional. Benfica has confirmed the price and the intention of Pérez's candidacy, but it has not announced that Mourinho has already left the club. Real Madrid has officially set the electoral framework, but the presidential result still has to confirm who will have the mandate to make decisions about the coach. Meanwhile, Spanish media have also reported on controversies surrounding promotional material in which Mourinho's image was allegedly used, with the Portuguese coach, according to those reports, denying that he participated in such a video and claiming that it was content generated by artificial intelligence.

That is precisely why the most important fact for now remains the one Benfica has formalized: if Pérez wins and if Real Madrid carries out the intention to appoint him, the clause amounts to 15 million euros. Everything else, including the presentation date, the composition of the coaching staff and the final agreement with Mourinho, depends on the elections and the clubs' next moves. For Benfica, this means preparing for a possible new beginning with Marco Silva or another solution, and for Real Madrid a decision that could mark the beginning of a new presidential term.
