Špancirfest 2026 ends with Silente and "From Sanremo to Varaždin" after an evening with Dubioza Kolektiv and Doris Dragović
The ten-day Špancirfest in Varaždin enters its finale on 30 August 2026 after a Saturday evening in which two major concert venues attracted strong audience interest. According to the organiser's official announcement, the PAN stage near the Old Town was filled to capacity during the performance by Dubioza Kolektiv, while Doris Dragović performed in front of a sold-out Vila Bedeković. The final day of the festival brings another series of street, children's, creative and gastronomic activities, while the evening music finale is led by Silente on the PAN stage and the Varaždin Tambura Orchestra with the programme "From Sanremo to Varaždin" at Vila Bedeković. This brings to a close the 28th edition of the festival, which from 21 to 30 August transformed Varaždin's historic centre into a network of stages, street zones and spaces for different types of programmes.
Before the start of this year's edition, the organisers announced around 600 programmes distributed across 23 festival zones, demonstrating that Špancirfest has long been much more than a series of evening concerts. Musical performances on the large stages remain among its most visible attractions, but the festival structure also includes street performances, theatre, workshops, children's programmes, creative zones, exhibitions, gastronomic offerings and social spaces. That is precisely why the final Sunday is not conceived merely as a wait for the last concerts, but as another full festival day. Visitors who want to remain in Varaždin until the end of the evening programmes can check accommodation in Varaždin, as some activities, according to the official schedule, continue beyond midnight.
Dubioza Kolektiv once again turned the Old Town into a major concert zone
Saturday, 29 August belonged, among others, to Dubioza Kolektiv, a band returning to Špancirfest as a well-known name on the main concert stage. The official festival schedule allocated their performance on the PAN stage near the Old Town a slot from 21:00 to 23:00, with free admission. In a morning announcement on 30 August, the organisers stated that the area had been filled to capacity and that thousands of people had gathered in front of the stage. According to their description, for almost two hours the audience sang, danced and jumped, and the concert grew into a large communal celebration of the kind already associated with performances by this Bosnian-Herzegovinian group.
Dubioza Kolektiv has built its concert identity on a combination of ska, punk, reggae, hip-hop, rock and electronic elements, but at major festivals direct communication with the audience is also an important part of their performances. In the announcement of this year's programme, Špancirfest also highlighted them as performers whose energetic shows and atmosphere have become a recognisable part of the festival's musical story. Independent confirmation of the strong turnout was also provided by Varaždinske vijesti, which reported on 30 August that the concert venues the previous evening had attracted thousands of visitors and that Dubioza Kolektiv had got the crowd dancing with its characteristic blend of different genres. The exact total number of visitors to Saturday's concert was not officially published, so estimates beyond the level of "thousands" would not be reliable.
A special moment of the concert came when representatives of Humana Nova appeared on stage. The Špancirfest organisers linked this moment with the themes of sustainability and inclusion, and the collaboration was not created solely for this festival evening. When presenting the programme of the 28th Špancirfest, the City of Varaždin stated that the social cooperative Humana Nova was responsible for producing the festival T-shirts. Humana Nova itself states that it has collaborated with Dubioza Kolektiv for years, including the production of part of the band's branded textiles and the logistics for the band's online store.
The connection between Dubioza, Humana Nova and Špancirfest also has a longer festival history. According to Humana Nova, back in 2018 the band held a spontaneous acoustic performance next to their stand at Špancirfest as a sign of support for the cooperative's work, and the collaboration later continued through new joint initiatives. For that reason, Humana Nova's appearance on the main stage on 29 August was not merely a ceremonial addition to the concert, but a continuation of a relationship that had developed over several years. In the context of a festival that simultaneously relies on mass audiences and seeks to highlight socially responsible projects, the moment acquired significance beyond the musical programme itself.
Doris Dragović in front of a sold-out Vila Bedeković
While Dubioza Kolektiv kept up the rhythm near the Old Town, Vila Bedeković had a different but equally important musical programme. Doris Dragović performed on 29 August from 20:30 to 22:00, and the official festival sales page marked the concert as sold out. After the performance, the organisers reported that the audience sang her songs from beginning to end, while Varaždinske vijesti noted that numerous visitors joined in with hits from the Split singer's long career. Unlike the free concerts on the PAN stage, the programme at Vila Bedeković belonged to the part of Špancirfest for which a ticket was required.
In this year's programme, Vila Bedeković served as a more intimate concert and theatre venue. When presenting the festival, the City of Varaždin announced a refreshed concept for the space, with less strictly defined seating at some programmes and more room for dancing and closer contact between performers and the audience. Over the ten days, concerts and theatre performances alternated there, and Doris Dragović was the last major solo singing star before the final programme on 30 August. The sold-out evening further confirmed that interest during the festival's final weekend was not concentrated solely on the free main stage.
Silente takes over the PAN stage on the festival's final evening
The main closing concert on the PAN stage near the Old Town on 30 August belongs to the group Silente. According to the official Špancirfest programme, the performance begins at 21:00 and lasts until 23:00, and admission is free. In the announcement, the organisers highlight the band's journey from its breakthrough with the song "Terca na tišinu" to more recent releases, with its songwriting centred on the Karamehmedović brothers and the vocals of Lara Viktorija Ilić. For Špancirfest, this is a symbolic closing of the main concert stage after ten days during which performers of different generations and styles alternated near the Old Town.
In the broader programme of the 28th Špancirfest, Silente was announced as one of the prominent names of the finale together with Dubioza Kolektiv, Zabranjeno pušenje and other performers. Their slot shortly after 21:00 places them at the centre of the festival's final evening, but not as the only attraction in the historic centre. At the same time, the official schedule also includes street performances on Korzo, among them Loop Cirkus & Cirkultura with the programme "Las Calaveras" and the visual programme La Luz Visuals. The ending of Špancirfest therefore remains faithful to a format in which the main stage and street programme take place in parallel, allowing audiences to choose between a classic concert experience and performances that use the city itself as a stage.
"From Sanremo to Varaždin" combines Italian canzoni with the tambura sound
The second important musical finale on 30 August takes place at Vila Bedeković, where the programme "From Sanremo to Varaždin" begins at 20:30. According to the official announcements by Špancirfest and the Varaždin Tambura Orchestra, this is a concert at which well-known Italian songs will be performed in new tambura arrangements. Alongside the Varaždin Tambura Orchestra, soloists Gabriela Hrženjak, Filip Hozjak and Neven Stipčić will perform, and the programme is conceived as a meeting between the Italian canzone tradition and Varaždin's tambura tradition. Among the recognisable musical references, the organisers mention songs such as "Volare" and "Felicità", but the focus of the evening is not on imitating the originals, but on reshaping them for a different instrumental ensemble.
The official schedule envisages the programme lasting until 22:00, and a ticket is required for admission. Vila Bedeković thus closes its festival cycle with a different musical language from the one that Silente will offer at the Old Town during the same part of the evening. One finale relies on a contemporary pop-rock band and a large open-air stage, while the other is based on an orchestral programme and a more intimate venue. This simultaneity illustrates well the way Špancirfest builds its programme: it does not try to direct all visitors towards a single closing event, but instead offers several different experiences in parallel.
The final Sunday is not just an evening concert finale
The official programme for 30 August shows that the festival's final day includes considerably more than two evening musical attractions. Street performers, children's activities, creative workshops and zones that remain active until late at night are scheduled throughout the day. Among the highlighted programmes is the French collective Moz Production with its performance "The Lighted Drummers", scheduled on Korzo at 20:00, featuring illuminated drums, costumes and street rhythms. Dulce Compania performs its programmes "Porcelain" and "Bubbles" during the day, while MR Mostacho and other street performers are also part of the final schedule.
For families and younger audiences, the programme continues in Park kreative and other zones. The official schedule includes the play "The Fox Without a Tail" performed by UO Peripetija, Dječja kreativnica, Zagonetno drvo, LEGO Akademija and Mini Špancir Disco. The retro zone on Europski trg continues until late evening, the Preloved Market reopens in the afternoon, and the Okusi svijeta gastronomic zone on Kapucinski trg, according to the programme, operates until midnight. Vinski grad and the amusement park remain open even after most of the concert programme has ended, confirming that the festival rhythm does not stop immediately after the final song on the main stage.
Such a distribution of activities is also important for visitors coming to Varaždin only for the final day. Instead of arriving immediately before the concert, the official programme allows for several hours of exploring the city, different zones and street performances. Because activities are located across several squares, streets and courtyards in the historic centre, the festival experience is largely created by moving between locations. For visitors planning to remain after the main programmes have ended, accommodation offers in Varaždin may also be useful, particularly if they do not want to organise their return immediately after the late-evening activities.
Ten days, 23 zones and around 600 announced programmes
Špancirfest is being held for the 28th time in 2026, from 21 to 30 August. Before the festival began, the City of Varaždin and the Varaždin Tourist Board announced that around 600 programmes were planned across 23 zones in the historic centre. This figure includes various categories, from major concerts and theatre performances to street art, workshops, children's activities and accompanying projects. The organisers also emphasise that the historic centre functions during the festival as a single large stage, but this is primarily a description of the concept: individual activities have their own locations, times and admission conditions.
This year's main concert stage near the Old Town hosted a series of regional and international names over the ten days, while Vila Bedeković was reserved for selected ticketed musical and theatre programmes. The final weekend further emphasised this division. On Friday, Zabranjeno pušenje took over the PAN stage, on Saturday Dubioza Kolektiv, and Silente was selected for Sunday's closing slot. At the same time, after its theatre evenings, Vila Bedeković entered the musical finale with Doris Dragović and the programme of the Varaždin Tambura Orchestra.
It is important, however, to distinguish the programme scope announced in advance from the final attendance figures. The organisers state that Špancirfest generally attracts a very large number of people and that some evenings of this year's edition were exceptionally well attended, but the final total number of visitors for the 2026 edition had not yet been published in the official sources used for this article at the time of the final day. The success of the last weekend can therefore be described through confirmed sold-out programmes and reports of thousands of people at the concert venues, but not through an unverified final total for the entire festival.
Practical information for arriving on the final day
For visitors arriving by car on 30 August, the organiser provided four free car parks outside the immediate festival centre during the festival. According to the official service announcement, these are locations in Biškupečka ulica, near Gradski bazeni and Tehnološki park in Zagrebačka ulica, in Optujska ulica and near Gumiimpex GRP. Special free bus lines to the centre of Varaždin were introduced from these locations. The organiser stated that at weekends they run every 20 minutes and that transport on city bus lines is free during Špancirfest.
Such organisation is particularly important on the final evening, when the programme at Vila Bedeković, street performances on Korzo and Silente's concert near the Old Town overlap within a short period. The historic centre is easiest to explore on foot, while parking outside the centre reduces the need to drive into the area with the highest concentration of visitors. As schedules and operational information may change, visitors are advised to check the latest version of the official programme and service notices before departure.
After Silente's concert ends at 23:00, the main music stage will bring the programme of the 28th Špancirfest to a close, but some festival zones are scheduled to remain active for a while longer. The festival will therefore not end at a single moment in a single location, but through the gradual winding down of different activities across the city centre. What has already been confirmed is that the final weekend produced two powerful Saturday concert scenes - a mass gathering for Dubioza Kolektiv and a sold-out evening with Doris Dragović - while on 30 August the final word belongs to Silente, the Varaždin Tambura Orchestra and street performers distributed throughout Varaždin's historic centre.
