Manchester United denied victory against 10-man Tottenham: Solanke equalises in stoppage time ahead of trip to Atlético
Manchester United failed to end their run of disappointing league results even in a match in which they held the lead and had a numerical advantage. In the sixth round of the English Premier League, played on 10 October 2026 at Old Trafford, Tottenham Hotspur earned a point with a 1-1 draw despite having to finish the match with ten men. Bryan Mbeumo put the hosts ahead in the 73rd minute, Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later, and Dominic Solanke scored with a header in the second minute of stoppage time. It was a particularly painful outcome for Michael Carrick's side, who missed the opportunity to secure only their second league victory of the season. United have just six points from six matches, which, according to figures published by Sky Sports, represents their worst start to a league season since 1986/87. Their next challenge comes as early as Tuesday, 13 October, when Manchester United travel to face Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League.
Tottenham could have taken the lead well before United
According to Tottenham's official match report, the visitors successfully pressed the home defence from the opening minutes and created opportunities after winning possession. As early as the third minute, goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a mistake while passing towards Kobbie Mainoo, allowing Lucas Bergvall to intercept the ball and set up Solanke for a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Lammens made amends with a save, but the attack demonstrated United's difficulties in playing out from the back under pressure. Bergvall later tried his luck himself, while Mohammed Kudus missed in the 21st minute following a move involving Sandro Tonali, Destiny Udogie and Savio. Tottenham approached the home goal through a variety of attacking combinations but failed to turn their territorial superiority into a goal.
United created one of their few first-half opportunities following a corner taken by the visitors. Mbeumo launched a counterattack and found Amad Diallo, whose 34th-minute effort was saved by Antonín Kinský. Shortly before half-time, Tottenham threatened again through Conor Gallagher, but Youri Tielemans intervened at the right moment and Lammens stopped the continuation of the move. The teams went into the break goalless, with sections of the Old Trafford crowd expressing their dissatisfaction. Sky Sports notes that Tottenham squandered several opportunities before half-time that could have given them an advantage before the contest began to develop in the hosts' favour.
Mbeumo scores from Cunha's pass before a sending-off changes the circumstances
Tottenham continued to threaten at the beginning of the second half, with Solanke sending the ball over the crossbar from a promising position following a cross from Savio. United gradually became more dangerous, although the visiting defenders repeatedly managed to prevent Bruno Fernandes and his teammates from getting their final shots away. Carrick made three substitutions in the 59th minute: Carlos Baleba, Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee replaced Tielemans, Leny Yoro and Amad. Baleba's introduction was also significant because the midfielder, following his recovery and gradual return to training, made his Manchester United debut. Nevertheless, the decisive move that gave the hosts the lead was created by players who were already on the pitch.
In the 73rd minute, Matheus Cunha found Mbeumo inside the penalty area. The Cameroon forward turned and beat Kinský with a precise low left-footed shot into the bottom corner. United took the lead during a period when the contest appeared more balanced than it had at the start. Five minutes later came another turning point, this time a disciplinary one: following a confrontation with Luke Shaw, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a straight red card. Referee Stuart Attwell dismissed him for moving his head towards his opponent during a physical altercation, and the incident sparked a wider confrontation among the players. Shaw received a yellow card for his part in the dispute.
Even a numerical advantage was not enough to secure three points
Bentancur had entered the match in the 66th minute as a replacement for Bergvall, meaning his appearance ended very shortly after it began. United were leading 1-0 and had the opportunity to see out the match more comfortably with eleven players against ten. The hosts could have extended their lead in the 86th minute, but Kinský saved Mbeumo's attempt. Tottenham, meanwhile, did not retreat completely and continued searching for an equaliser. That persistence was rewarded after the match had entered stoppage time, with the fourth official having indicated eight additional minutes.
In the 90+2nd minute, Sandro Tonali delivered a cross into Manchester United's penalty area, where Solanke battled with Lisandro Martínez to establish his position and directed a header into the far corner. Lammens could not intervene, and the scores were level. Tottenham's official report particularly highlights that Solanke wore the London club's captain's armband for the first time in this match. He had missed several good opportunities earlier, but his final effort secured a point and Tottenham's first away league goal of the season. According to figures published by Tottenham, 74,129 spectators watched the match from the stands, and the final whistle brought another round of boos from frustrated home supporters.
Six points from six matches and the worst start in almost four decades
Manchester United now have one win, three draws and two defeats from their opening six league appearances. Their total of six points represents the club's worst return after the same number of matches since the 1986/87 season, according to comparative figures cited by Sky Sports and British sports media. Following Saturday's fixtures, United occupied 12th place, although positions at such an early stage of the campaign can change depending on the results of rivals who have yet to play their matches. More important than the position itself is the pattern of results: the team have failed to win in four consecutive matches across all competitions. Against Tottenham, they were unable to take advantage even of circumstances that should have allowed them to close out the game more securely.
Carrick disappointed as De Zerbi praises his players' character
Michael Carrick did not attempt to play down the problem after the match. In comments reported by Sky Sports, he admitted that his team had not responded well either with or without the ball and that he was dissatisfied with their points total. He particularly emphasised that United must show greater determination and competitive maturity when they find themselves in a favourable position. However, he did not lose faith in his players or present individual mistakes as the sole reason for dropping points. His message was that the entire team must quickly find a way to reverse their current run of results.
Goalkeeper Lammens also warned, in comments published on Manchester United's official website, that the team should not have allowed so much space to opponents playing with ten men. In his assessment, after taking the lead United needed either to score a second goal or at least prevent their opponents from creating another serious threat. The Belgian goalkeeper pointed out that a numerical advantage does not automatically guarantee a straightforward finish, particularly when the opposing team has nothing left to lose. For United, the lesson is specific: control of possession and tempo must be accompanied by discipline when defending crosses, rather than relying solely on attempts to score another goal.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi offered a different perspective on the same match. At his press conference, according to the transcript published by the club, he acknowledged that Bentancur's reaction had been a mistake but praised the way his players responded to the sending-off. He believes Tottenham could already have established a lead in the first half and that the team, despite their problems with results, are showing progress in their collective work. He appointed Solanke captain to demonstrate his confidence in the striker following criticism of his poor finishing. Although Spurs still failed to register their first league victory of the season after the draw, De Zerbi views the point at Old Trafford as an important demonstration of fighting spirit rather than proof that their difficulties have been resolved.
Injuries complicated match preparations, but Carrick also welcomed returning players
Manchester United went into the Tottenham match with squad problems. Before the game, according to official club information, Carrick confirmed that Patrick Dorgu would be unavailable for several weeks because of an injury sustained while on international duty. Noussair Mazraoui was also experiencing fitness problems after representing his national team, while Benjamin Šeško was not ready to return following an earlier injury. Manuel Ugarte remained unavailable following knee surgery. These absences reduced United's rotation options during a schedule featuring Premier League and Champions League fixtures in quick succession.
At the same time, several players returned to contention. Mainoo started the match, Amad was included in the starting eleven, Baleba came on in the second half, and Marcus Rashford appeared in the closing stages. These additional options are important for the upcoming fixtures, but each player's fitness for the trip to Madrid will still need to be assessed based on fresh information from the club. It cannot automatically be assumed that everyone who played against Tottenham will be ready for the same workload three days later. Carrick must therefore balance the need for a stronger performance against Atlético with the availability of players returning from layoffs.
Atlético arrive in Madrid with different league momentum
Unlike Manchester United, Atlético de Madrid won their final league match before the teams' meeting. Diego Simeone's side defeated Deportivo Alavés 2-1 away from home on 10 October, as confirmed by official Spanish LaLiga records. Alejandro Grimaldo scored the opening goal in the 33rd minute, Lucas Boyé equalised from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, and Cristian Romero decided the contest with an 87th-minute header from an Álex Baena cross. Alavés were reduced to ten men in the second half following the dismissal of Ángel Pérez. The comparison is revealing: on the same day, Atlético converted their numerical advantage into a late victory, while United surrendered an established lead against ten-man Tottenham.
According to LaLiga's official results overview, Atlético had recorded consecutive victories over Real Sociedad, Osasuna and Real Madrid before travelling to Alavés, subsequently adding another league success. Such a run does not guarantee a result against United, but it demonstrates that the Spanish team approach the encounter with greater competitive confidence. It will be particularly interesting to see how both sides handle moments when they take the lead or have to respond to pressure. Against Tottenham, United struggled to protect their advantage, whereas Atlético found the decisive goal in the closing stages at Alavés. Nevertheless, different opponents and circumstances mean that domestic results cannot be directly translated into expectations for a Champions League match.
The match at the Metropolitano carries significance for the European standings
Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United meet on Tuesday, 13 October, at 21:00 local time in Madrid, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium. The date, kick-off time and venue have been confirmed by Atlético and UEFA. This is the second matchday of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, which United began with a 4-0 home victory over Azerbaijan's Sabah on 10 September. Atlético lost their opening away fixture against Liverpool 2-1. The hosts will therefore be seeking their first points in this European campaign, while the visitors aim to build on a positive opening result in a competition where, unlike the Premier League, their first appearance did not end in disappointment.
UEFA's league-phase format brings together 36 clubs in a single table, with each playing eight matches against different opponents. The top eight teams at the end of the league phase advance directly to the round of 16, clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, and those below 24th are eliminated. Under this format, every point earned and the goal difference can influence the eventual outcome. At this early stage, it would be unjustified to portray one match as decisive for qualification, but the trip to Madrid is certainly a much tougher test than United's victory over Sabah might suggest. Carrick's team face opponents with experience at the highest European level and very strong recent domestic league results.
Previous European meeting ended with the Madrid club advancing
The encounter in Madrid also has a direct historical connection. Atlético and Manchester United last met in the Champions League in the round of 16 of the 2021/22 season, when the Spanish club advanced 2-1 on aggregate. Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Madrid, Atlético won 1-0 at Old Trafford on 15 March 2022 thanks to a goal from Renan Lodi, as UEFA recalls in its report. Diego Simeone was also in charge of the Madrid side at that time. Squads and circumstances have changed considerably since then, meaning that result is not a reliable indicator of what lies ahead, but it confirms that these two clubs have already contested an important European tie in which Atlético found a way through.
For Manchester United, the visit to Atlético marks the beginning of a demanding sequence of fixtures. After Madrid, they face a Premier League trip to Leeds on Sunday, 18 October, before travelling to Italy on 21 October for a Champions League meeting with Como, according to the schedule published by the club. Atlético visit Stuttgart on 20 October after hosting United. The short intervals between matches increase the importance of squad fitness, managing playing time and the teams' ability to recover quickly from previous results. United do not arrive in Madrid following a defeat, but the 1-1 draw against ten-man Tottenham left almost the same feeling of a missed opportunity. They will need a considerably more complete performance at the Metropolitano if their European start to the season is to remain in contrast with their poor domestic league form.
