Arsenal come from behind to beat Leeds, but Hincapié's post-match injury raises doubts over his availability against Lille
Arsenal defeated Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in London on 10 October 2026, returning to winning ways in the English Premier League, but the final whistle did not bring an end to the uncertainty surrounding Mikel Arteta's team. Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié, who came on during the final ten minutes or so, injured his right ankle while completing additional running exercises after the final whistle. According to reports in the British media, he was unable to leave the pitch unaided and required assistance. The severity of the injury had not been officially confirmed by 11 October, and Arsenal's next match is scheduled for Tuesday, 13 October, against French side Lille in the Champions League. As a result, a valuable league victory achieved after falling behind was overshadowed by questions about whether Arteta would lose another defensive option for the European encounter.
The problem emerged after the final whistle
Hincapié replaced Riccardo Calafiori in the 82nd minute against Leeds, with Arsenal already leading 2-1 and trying to protect their advantage. After the match, he joined a group of players who had not completed the full game and were performing additional running exercises on the pitch. Such work is common in professional football, allowing substitutes or players with limited playing time to make up part of their planned physical workload. However, according to London's Evening Standard, the Ecuadorian experienced an ankle problem during the activity and had to leave the pitch with the assistance of reserve goalkeeper Illan Meslier. TalkSPORT also reports that the injury involved his right ankle, consistent with accounts describing the defender holding his injured leg as he left the field.
It is important to distinguish what was observed on the pitch from the medical assessment, which has yet to be published. The fact that the footballer needed assistance to leave does not allow any reliable conclusions about the type of injury, its severity or the expected recovery period. The Evening Standard reports that an assessment of his condition was planned within the following 48 hours, precisely the period leading up to Lille's arrival. There has been no official confirmation that the problem is a sprain, ligament damage or an injury that would necessarily require a prolonged absence. Until the findings and the club's medical staff's decision are announced, Hincapié's participation on Tuesday should be considered uncertain rather than definitively ruled out.
Leeds looked more likely to win for much of the match
The league encounter itself did not begin as the home side had hoped. Leeds, who arrived in London unbeaten in their opening five matches, were organised and aggressive, particularly when pressing Arsenal's defence and exploiting space after regaining possession. According to The Guardian's report and Arsenal's official review, the visitors created the more dangerous chances during the first half, although the teams went into the break goalless. Arsenal enjoyed possession but struggled for a long time to turn their passing combinations into sufficiently clear-cut opportunities. Goalkeeper David Raya was called into action, while the Leeds players demonstrated that their unbeaten start to the season was no coincidence.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when James Justin scored in the 55th minute to make it 0-1 following a move developed by Gabriel Gudmundsson. The goal further highlighted the home defence's difficulties in tracking runs and protecting the space around its back line. Leeds manager Daniel Farke could have been satisfied with the way his team had restricted their opponents up to that point, but the lead did not last long. Arsenal increased the tempo after conceding and found a better rhythm, while Arteta's planned changes soon shifted the balance of the contest. During the final third of the match, the visitors found it increasingly difficult to advance out of their own half and failed to restore the pressure they had applied at the beginning of the encounter.
Calafiori equalises, Guimarães completes the comeback
The equaliser arrived in the 62nd minute and was scored by Riccardo Calafiori, the very defender Hincapié would later replace. Noni Madueke delivered the ball towards the far post, Ben White returned it into the middle, and Calafiori beat James Trafford with a close-range finish. The goal was important for more than just the scoreline: Arsenal subsequently began gaining territory more quickly and entering the Leeds penalty area more frequently. Arteta soon introduced Jurriën Timber, Viktor Gyökeres and Bruno Guimarães, bringing additional energy and different options to his team's attacking build-up. It was the Brazilian midfielder who played the decisive role in the next goal.
In the 70th minute, Guimarães finished one of Arsenal's best-executed moves of the match. Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard combined with a sequence of passes, Declan Rice returned the ball towards the edge of the penalty area with a backheel, and the Brazilian found the corner of Trafford's goal with a precise low shot. According to the club's official match report, it was his first goal at the Emirates since joining Arsenal from Newcastle during the summer. After completing the comeback, the home side did not have to focus exclusively on defending their lead: Ødegaard missed a major opportunity, while Trafford denied Saka in a one-on-one situation towards the end. Leeds, despite an excellent performance during the first part of the match, left without points and suffered their first league defeat of the season.
Arteta sees the value of his substitutes confirmed, but faces another question
With this victory, Arsenal recorded their fifth win in six league appearances, having lost their previous Premier League encounter 3-0 against Brighton. In comments published by the club, Arteta stressed that his team had faced demanding circumstances following an extended international break during which sixteen players had travelled with their national teams. According to the manager, very little time remained for collective match preparation, making the response after conceding particularly important. He also highlighted the impact of the substitutes, explaining that their contribution was not secondary but an integral part of how Arsenal aim to win matches. Guimarães' winning goal provided a concrete example of that approach.
On the other hand, the match demonstrated that a positive result does not automatically mean every problem has been resolved. Leeds managed to put pressure on the home side's defensive line for a significant portion of the encounter, and Arsenal's performance during the opening hour was not as convincing as it became after the substitutions. The Guardian also reported Farke's assessment that Leeds had shown progress in their organisation, pressing and play in possession in London, even though they failed to turn that improvement into points. For Arteta, therefore, the victory was useful for two reasons: it delivered points and demonstrated how much substitutes can change the course of a match. At the same time, Hincapié's injury illustrates how quickly such squad depth can become restricted.
Hincapié is more than just a backup option on the left
The Ecuador international is 24 years old and has already gained experience in several different competitive environments. In June 2026, Arsenal announced that they had activated the option to sign him permanently from Bayer Leverkusen after he had spent the previous season on loan in London. According to club records, he made 39 appearances in all competitions during that season and contributed to winning the English league title. Before arriving in England, he played in Ecuador, Argentina and Germany and was part of the Bayer team that won the Bundesliga in the 2023/24 season. That career record explains why Arsenal see him as more than a player used simply to see out the final minutes.
Hincapié can operate in central defence and on its left side, allowing the manager to adjust his formation without making major changes to the rest of the team. This versatility is particularly important during periods when domestic league and European matches follow one another at short intervals. Nevertheless, his appearance against Leeds was only his third Premier League outing of the season, and he had experienced muscular problems in recent weeks that affected his rhythm and availability. He did not play for Ecuador during the latest international break, while his previous muscular difficulties had further slowed his return to competitive match fitness. His eight minutes on the pitch against Leeds were therefore supposed to represent another step in his gradual return to matches, but the incident after the final whistle reopened questions about his fitness.
Injuries have already reduced Arsenal's defensive options
Hincapié's physical condition is particularly important because of the other absences Arsenal are already dealing with. In their official preview of the Leeds match, the club stated that William Saliba was still not ready to return because of a back problem, while British media have also reported muscular difficulties affecting Cristhian Mosquera. In addition, attacking player Christos Tzolis had to withdraw from international duty with Greece, and Arteta indicated that he would be unavailable for several weeks. Not all these problems concern the same area of the team, but together they reduce the manager's flexibility when selecting his lineup and managing workloads. The positive news for Arsenal was that Kai Havertz and Ezri Konsa had recovered sufficiently to start against Leeds.
Calafiori's goal further underlined his importance to Arsenal's play on the left. According to a statistical review published by the club, after six league appearances this season he had recorded one goal and two assists, placing him among the league's most productive defenders. His contribution extends beyond defensive responsibilities, as he frequently joins attacking moves and exploits space closer to the centre of the pitch. If Hincapié is unavailable against Lille, Calafiori could be required to play additional minutes, while Arteta would have to consider his backup solutions more carefully. Internal reshuffling among the defenders is possible, but the final selection will depend on the condition of the entire squad rather than a single medical assessment.
Lille arrive in London after losing their European opener
According to UEFA's official schedule and information from Arsenal, the match against Lille will take place on Tuesday, 13 October, at the Emirates, kicking off at 8 p.m. London time, or 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time. It is the second matchday of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, in which Arsenal have already recorded a victory while Lille are still seeking their first points. The English club won 1-0 away to Napoli in their opening match on 9 September, as confirmed by UEFA's results summary. Lille had lost 3-2 at home to Spanish side Real Betis the previous day, despite having held the lead during the match. The contrasting results from the opening round add competitive significance to the London encounter, although they do not in themselves determine its outcome.
Under the current Champions League format, 36 clubs compete in a single combined league table, with each team playing eight matches against eight different opponents. Under UEFA regulations, the top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while clubs finishing between ninth and 24th place continue through an additional knockout play-off round. Consequently, points earned as early as October influence the possibility of avoiding extra matches later in the season. Victory over Lille would extend Arsenal's successful start to their European campaign, while the French team have an opportunity to improve their standing after the defeat against Betis. For the London club, it will also be their second consecutive home appearance within just a few days, leaving little time for recovery and tactical adjustments.
The coming weeks bring an even more demanding schedule
Arsenal will have little scope to wait for an extended period if Hincapié proves unable to resume full-intensity training immediately. After Lille, they travel to Nottingham Forest on 18 October, followed by a European meeting with Bayern in Munich on 21 October. This means Arteta will have to prepare his team for four matches in two competitions over eleven days, counting from the Leeds encounter. Such a schedule increases the importance of rotation, particularly in positions requiring frequent acceleration, changes of direction and defensive challenges. However, it is not possible to conclude in advance that Hincapié will miss all those fixtures: there is currently no medical confirmation to support such a claim.
The key information now will be whether the defender can bear weight on his ankle without difficulty, participate in training and receive medical clearance to compete. The assessment will be based on examinations and symptom monitoring, not merely on how uncomfortable his departure from the pitch appeared. As of 11 October, Arsenal had not announced a definitive diagnosis or a return date, so it would be unjustified to suggest any specific number of days or weeks on the sidelines. What has been confirmed is that Calafiori and Guimarães secured the victory over Leeds, that Hincapié subsequently experienced a problem with his right ankle and that Lille will arrive in London on 13 October. Given the short interval between the matches, the club's next update on the Ecuadorian's physical condition will be important in determining the lineup with which Arsenal attempt to continue their winning run in the Champions League.
