Lošinj Island has once again become the epicenter of adrenaline, sporting spirit, and cycling excellence. During the weekend of March 22 and 23, 2025, Mali Lošinj hosted the third edition of the international MTB race „XCO Lošinj - Cross Country Mountain“, which took place in the magical bay of Čikat, one of the most beautiful natural oases of the Adriatic. And this year too, the competition attracted top riders from across Europe, with a total of 260 demonstrating incredible endurance, technique, and sporting passion on a course that combined natural beauty with technical challenges.

Čikat under the Wheels – a Challenging Course and Harsh Conditions

The 4-kilometer-long course with a total elevation gain of 100 meters stretched through forest roads, rocky areas, and steep climbs above the sea, including the famous climb to Monte Baston, from which a spectacular view of the Kvarner Bay is offered. Rain in the days leading up to the race further soaked the course, making mud one of the main factors in every race, especially on technically demanding descents. The race was held over several laps, depending on the category, putting the cyclists' physical and mental endurance to the ultimate test.

Competitors from 15 Countries, Points for the Olympic Games

The race was part of the international calendar and classified as a C1 UCI category, which means that the riders collected extremely important points for qualification for the Olympic Games. Special attention was focused on the elite categories, where the best mountain bikers in Europe competed, including representatives from Poland, Italy, France, Hungary, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Croatia. This sporting spectacle also played an important role in promoting Lošinj as a destination for active tourism, further emphasizing the synergy between sport and tourism.

The Best Among the Best – Results by Category

Elite Men: Daniele Braidot from Italy was dominant from start to finish, leaving behind Louis Belrittija from France and Rok Naglič from Slovenia.
Elite Women: Polish rider Gabriela Wojtyla recorded a decisive victory ahead of Regine Bruchner from Hungary and Swiss representative Jane Czeczinkarová.
Juniors: Among the younger competitors, Mattia Schievenin from Italy and Polish rider Nikola Gliniecka stood out, while the other juniors also showed enviable talent and potential. Despite the challenges, the course provided an ideal balance between technical sections and fast sectors, which was key to the excitement of the race.

Organization, Cooperation, and the Importance of the Race

The organizing team led by the MTB Trbovlje cycling club, in cooperation with local sports and tourism institutions, provided top-notch conditions for the event. The race was also included in the Croatian Cup, further boosting domestic sports enthusiasm. On the technical side, all safety measures and logistical details were meticulously planned, allowing the competition to proceed smoothly even under unpredictable weather conditions.

Lošinj in the Rhythm of Cycling – What’s Next?

Mountain biking on Lošinj shows no signs of stopping. Soon, two more major events that attract competitors from all over the world will follow. The first of these is the „4Islands MTB Stage Race“, which is held from April 15 to 19, 2025, across four islands in the Kvarner region – Lošinj, Rab, Cres, and Krk. Cyclists, riding in pairs, will cover more than 260 kilometers of terrain, conquering over 5000 meters of elevation gain. Each island brings its own challenges – rocky trails, steep climbs, macadam surfaces by the sea, and panoramic views that take your breath away.

XTERRA Croatia – Triathlon in the Heart of Nature

Immediately thereafter, from May 8 to 11, XTERRA Croatia takes place, a prestigious international competition that combines swimming, MTB riding, and trail running. The MTB segment, nearly 40 kilometers long, passes through forested areas and the technical sectors of Mali Lošinj, while the 10-kilometer running route follows the coast and traverses Mediterranean landscapes. The swimming segment in the clear Adriatic further emphasizes the uniqueness of this race, which brings together athletes from various parts of the world.

Hike&Bike Lošinj – A Digital Outdoor Adventure

For all those who wish to explore the island at their own pace, there is a detailed digital platform with an interactive map of all cycling and walking trails on Lošinj. This map allows users to choose between 16 cycling and 18 walking routes of various difficulty levels. Thanks to GPS tagging, users can track the route in real time, and each segment includes a description, technical data, and photographs. This is an ideal way to explore the island independently, whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
