Opatija, the pearl of the Kvarner, every year at this time transforms into the center of joy, tradition, and carnival spirit. With the arrival of the "fifth season," the town takes on the role of host to one of the most famous and happiest carnivals in Croatia. For more than a month, the streets, squares, and halls of Opatija become stages where a true spectacle of colors, laughter, and creativity unfolds.

History and Importance of the Opatija Carnival

The Opatija Carnival has a long tradition dating back to the distant past. This time of year is known as a time when masks take over power, and the rules of everyday life give way to uninhibited fun and artistic expression. Historically, carnivals played an important role in maintaining the community spirit, uniting the local population through song, dance, and humor.

The Beginning of the Carnival Festivities

This year’s carnival begins on January 17 with the raising of the carnival flag in front of the town market. The traditional ceremony also includes the symbolic hanging of Pust, a puppet that represents the collective scapegoat for all the misfortunes of the past year. This ritual not only marks the beginning of a period of joy but also carries the symbolism of facing challenges together and optimism for the future.

Diverse Program for All Ages

The Opatija Carnival program is carefully designed to satisfy different tastes and age groups. From the adrenaline-filled Rally of masked vehicles to the children's parades, every event has its own unique charm. The Rally of masked vehicles, held on January 18, is a special attraction for fans of speed and creative costumes. The race ends at Slatina, where participants and visitors together enjoy the cheerful atmosphere.

Children's Carnival Parade

A special place in the program is occupied by the Children's Carnival Parade, planned for February 16. More than 3000 children from across the region will participate in the parade, showcasing their imaginative masks and costumes. This event provides an opportunity for the youngest to be the stars of the day, while parents, tourists, and locals enjoy the joyful scenes.

Balinjerada – the trademark of Opatija

Balinjerada, which will take place this year on February 23, is certainly the highlight of the carnival events. This unusual race on rollerball bearings brings together participants of all generations, from professionals to amateurs. The official part of the program includes a parade of "karići" and "monopatins," while the audience enjoys the atmosphere filled with energy and creativity. Balinjerada is more than a race – it is a symbol of the Opatija Carnival and a tradition passed down through generations.

Masked Klapa Marathon

Music lovers eagerly await the Masked Klapa Marathon, which will be held on February 7. This musical event gathers masked klapas (traditional singing groups) who, with their humor, songs, and choreography, create a unique experience for the audience. With the accompaniment of the host duo, the evening is guaranteed to be filled with laughter and joy.

Cultural and Tourist Significance

The Opatija Carnival is not just a celebration of fun, but also an important tourist and cultural event. It attracts visitors from around the world, contributing to the promotion of the town and the region. Hospitality establishments, hotels, and souvenir shops record an increase in visitors, while the local community has the opportunity to showcase its customs, gastronomy, and hospitality.

The End of the Carnival Season

The carnival season ends on March 5, with the traditional burning of Pust. This act marks the end of the period of joy and the beginning of preparations for the upcoming spring. However, the memories of unforgettable moments and gatherings during the carnival remain in the hearts of all participants and visitors.

During carnival time, Opatija becomes a true paradise for lovers of fun, tradition, and creativity. Whether you choose to participate in parades, visit concerts, or simply enjoy the atmosphere, the carnival is an opportunity to experience the town in its most vibrant form. Put on your mask, unleash your imagination, and join the celebration that makes Opatija unique!

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
