The presentation of the new edition of the book "Riječka gostoljubivost" yesterday gathered significant stakeholders of Rijeka's tourism at the premises of the City Hall of Rijeka. The author of the book Igor Žic, the mayor of Rijeka Marko Filipović, and the director of the Rijeka Tourist Board Petar Škarpa jointly emphasized the importance of this project for promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the city.

Rijeka as a historical and contemporary tourist destination

Mayor Filipović emphasized that the book represents a combination of the past and future of Rijeka's tourism. Rijeka has experienced significant growth in tourism over the past decade, driven by the realization of numerous infrastructure and cultural projects. Filipović noted that the new edition of the book provides a valuable contribution to understanding the city's tourism development and offers an opportunity to promote Rijeka as an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign visitors.

Special attention was given to historical landmarks such as the Adamić Theatre, built in 1805, which was once the heart of the city's social life. The theatre included restaurants, cafés, and elite clubs and became a symbol of Rijeka's hospitality. In contrast to the historical development, modern projects like the luxurious Hilton Costabella Beach Resort & Spa have provided a strong boost to modern tourism.

Expanded edition for a richer context

The director of the Tourist Board, Petar Škarpa, emphasized that the new edition of the book "Riječka gostoljubivost" has been significantly expanded and enriched with additional content. The book describes development projects that have marked the past 25 years, including the renovation of historical hotels, the opening of new venues, and plans for the future. Notable projects include Motel Panorama, the Preluka complex, and the spaces of the Children's Hospital Kantrida, which represent key points for future tourist investments.

Škarpa emphasized the importance of collaboration with local institutions and partners, including the Museum of the City of Rijeka, the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral, and the State Archive of Rijeka. With the support of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the book was printed in record time, allowing it to become an ideal holiday gift.

Tourism and the identity of Rijeka

Igor Žic, the author of the book, shared interesting historical details that highlight the importance of Rijeka as a culturally and historically significant destination. The book offers insights into the challenges the city faced throughout the centuries, such as the balance between industrial development and tourism needs. The history of Rijeka is presented through the lens of hospitality, architectural gems, and social changes that shaped its identity.

Žic emphasized the connection between this book and the previous edition from 2000, as well as with the book "How to Read the City" by Radmila Matječić. He highlighted how the new edition explores the breadth of Rijeka's history and presents key moments that shaped the city, from the development of hotels and theatres to contemporary infrastructure projects.

Plans for the future

In 2024, Rijeka will continue to invest in the tourism sector. The renovation of the Jadran and Continental hotels, the inclusion of hotels in prestigious international chains, and the construction of new capacities on the coastal area are key elements of the long-term development plan. Tourism is seen as an integral part of Rijeka's identity, further strengthening the city's position on the tourist map of Croatia and Europe.

The book "Riječka gostoljubivost" is not only a review of historical and contemporary events but also an inspiration for future generations who will build the story of Rijeka as a city of hospitality, culture, and innovation.

That is why we strive for storytelling that is not merely the transmission of information, but an effort to understand the context, background and human dimension of each topic. Every article passes through the hands of an author guided by a simple rule: we do not write to fill space, but to provide real value.

In our work, we rely on experience gained through years of journalistic practice, as well as on the curiosity that constantly drives us forward. Whether it is a social change, a festival, a travel report, an analysis of a current issue or an event that attracts public attention, we always try to maintain a human tone and balance.
