The Rijeka Carnival, known as one of the most important and spectacular events in Croatia, has once again kicked off this year with the election of a new Queen. Nora Marčelja, representative of the Carnival Association Kunpanija z Halubja, proudly took the title of the 28th Queen of the Rijeka Carnival, while Master Sandi received the city keys, symbolizing the takeover of masquerade authority, from the Mayor of Rijeka, Marko Filipović. With this ceremonial act, the fifth annual season officially began—a season of joy, laughter, and splendor.

An Evening Full of Competitive Spirit and Carnival Joy

The Youth Hall was filled to capacity, with six candidates competing for the prestigious title of Queen. Each of them showcased their talent, charm, and knowledge of carnival traditions. Alongside Nora Marčelja, who secured the victory, the jury's sympathies were also won by Petra Zaharija from the Grobničke štrige group, the first attendant, and Dea Borovac from Špažićari Kostrena, the second attendant. The jury, composed of esteemed carnival enthusiasts and sponsor representatives, had the challenging task of deciding which contestant best embodies the spirit of the Rijeka Carnival.

Stage Spectacle and Musical Backdrop

The evening's program included not only the competition of the candidates but also performances by carnival groups that delighted the audience with their creative choreographies. The Čiket Rijeka Carnival Association won the award for the most carnival-like performance this year, thanks to an innovative presentation that combined humor, dance, and tradition.

The musical backdrop was provided by Klapa Intriga, while the evening's hosts, Josip Krmpotić, Robert Ferlin, and Barbara Udovičić Papeš, further elevated the atmosphere with their witty remarks.

Queen with Title and Gifts

In addition to the honor of wearing the title of Queen, Nora Marčelja also received numerous awards. A specially designed brooch from the Small Gallery and a prize trip for her entire carnival group are just part of the gifts she received from sponsors, further emphasizing the importance and prestige of this event.

Rijeka Carnival: More Than Tradition

The Rijeka Carnival is not only the largest carnival in Croatia but also a significant part of the cultural identity of the city of Rijeka. Its history dates back centuries, and modern parades, which began in 1982, have become an integral part of European carnival events. During the carnival period, Rijeka transforms into an open-air stage, attracting thousands of participants and tourists from around the world.

Planned Activities During the Carnival

This year's Rijeka Carnival program is rich with events that include children's parades, concerts, dance evenings, gastronomic exhibitions, and sports activities. Particularly noteworthy are the Children's Carnival Parade, scheduled for February 15 in the city center, and the International Carnival Parade, set for March 2. Both events bring together participants from all over the world, creating a unique cultural mosaic.

World-Class Tourist Attraction

The Rijeka Carnival regularly appears on the list of Europe's most important events, and the Sunday Times has declared it one of the most exotic global events. Its uniqueness lies in the combination of tradition, art, entertainment, and the mass participation of citizens of all ages. The Rijeka Tourism Board continuously invests efforts in enhancing and promoting the carnival, further increasing its significance on a global level.

What Does the Carnival Mean to Rijeka?

For the people of Rijeka, the carnival is not just an event; it is a symbol of unity, pride, and creativity. During the carnival period, the city literally breathes a different rhythm. Streets become places of meeting, laughter, and dance, while masks allow everyone to become what they wish for a moment. The Rijeka Carnival embodies the spirit of freedom and joy, and its message of tolerance and unity resonates far beyond the borders of Croatia.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
