On Sunday, January 26, 2025, the vineyard area of Sveti Ivan Zelina will come to life with the celebration of Vincekovo, a traditional marking of the beginning of the new vineyard year. Vincekovo is not just a custom but also a symbol of the deep connection between humans and nature, vineyards, and the culture that has been nurtured for generations in this part of Croatia.

Symbolism of Vincekovo: The Beginning of the New Vineyard Year

Vincekovo is the day when vineyard workers go out to their fields to protect the vines and ensure a fruitful year through symbolic gestures and prayers. This year, the ceremony will begin with a holy mass at 11 AM in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Kalinja, followed by the traditional blessing of the vineyards precisely at noon. Saint Vinko, the patron saint of vineyard workers, takes a central place in this event, and his grace is invoked to protect the vineyards from calamities and ensure a bountiful harvest.

One of the most important parts of the ritual is watering the vines with wine and gifting homemade sausages. These symbols represent gratitude for the past year and hope and optimism for the future. Vineyard workers cut the first buds from the vines and take them home to place them in water. After a few weeks, these buds will show whether the vine is ready for the upcoming season.

History and Significance of Viticulture in Sveti Ivan Zelina

Sveti Ivan Zelina, known as the town of 1000 hills, has a rich tradition of viticulture that goes deep into history. Particularly noteworthy is the contribution of the lower Zelina parish priest Dragutin Stražimir, the author of the first modern book on viticulture in Croatia. Stražimir was a dedicated educator who significantly advanced the knowledge and practice of vineyard workers in this region through his work. His legacy lives on through wine exhibitions, educational programs, and the wine culture that is still nurtured today.

Traditional wine exhibitions, which have become a recognizable part of the region, provide an opportunity for local winemakers to present their wines and compete for prestigious awards. Vincekovo is precisely the moment when vineyard workers return to their roots and pay tribute to the tradition that enabled their success.

Cultural Significance and Social Gatherings

Besides being a religious and agricultural event, Vincekovo also has a strong social component. The event gathers local residents as well as visitors from other parts of Croatia and abroad. As part of the celebration, the Croatian Singing Society Zelina brings joy with its performances, while visitors can enjoy local delicacies such as mulled wine, homemade sausages, and freshly baked bread.

Viticultural customs like Vincekovo not only connect people with nature but also with each other. This event becomes a meeting place for sharing experiences and collectively celebrating a tradition that enriches the entire community.

Touristic Potential of Sveti Ivan Zelina

The celebration of Vincekovo attracts more and more tourists who come to enjoy the authentic experience of the vineyard region. Sveti Ivan Zelina, known for its enchanting nature, rich history, and wine tradition, is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for those seeking a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.

For visitors planning an extended stay, it is recommended to explore the local hills, wine roads, and numerous attractions such as old chapels and museums. Vincekovo is an ideal opportunity to connect with the local population and immerse oneself in the spirit of community and hospitality that characterizes this region.

Message from the Organizers: "Come, Enjoy, and Become Part of the Tradition"

This year's celebration is organized by the Association of Winemakers and Vineyard Workers Brina from Kalinja in cooperation with the City of Sveti Ivan Zelina and the City Tourist Board. The organizers convey: "Vincekovo is more than a custom – it is a celebration of life, tradition, and love for the vineyard. We invite everyone to join us and enjoy the charms of our region!"
