Last weekend, from May 9th to 11th, 2025, the Lika region shone with a special spiritual radiance, marking the ceremonial opening of a new section of the Croatian network of the Way of St. James – Camino Lika. This significant event attracted numerous pilgrims, both from various parts of Croatia and from abroad, who embarked on a three-day walk discovering the charms of the Lika region, its deep spirituality, and the widely renowned hospitality of the local population. The route that was the focus of this inaugural pilgrimage stretched through picturesque landscapes, connecting the towns of Udbina, Podlapača, Bilaj, and, as the crown of the journey, Smiljan, the birthplace of the great Nikola Tesla.
Camino Lika represents an important addition to the ever-growing network of Camino routes in Croatia, joining already existing and popular routes such as Camino Imota, Camino Podravina, Camino Banovina, or Camino Krk. The project is the result of dedicated work and cooperation of multiple stakeholders, including the Confraternity of St. James, local tourist boards, and enthusiasts, with the aim of promoting Lika as a unique destination that offers a combination of active vacation, cultural tourism, and a deep spiritual experience. The development of such trails not only enriches the tourist offer of the region but also encourages the sustainable development of rural areas, revitalizing lesser-known but exceptionally valuable parts of Croatia. Udbina, as one of the starting points of this section, offers a rich history and excellent accommodation options.
A spiritual journey through the heart of Lika
Pilgrims who participated in the opening of Camino Lika had the opportunity to experience much more than just walking. The journey was imbued with moments of prayer, quiet contemplation, and fellowship, creating unforgettable memories for all participants. The route, carefully designed to showcase the authentic beauty of Lika's nature, led through forests, across meadows, and along clear watercourses, allowing pilgrims to connect with nature and find inner peace. Every step was an opportunity to discover hidden corners of Lika, its natural treasures, and cultural-historical monuments that testify to the rich past of this region. The choice of Udbina as a starting point is not accidental; the Church of Croatian Martyrs in Udbina represents a strong spiritual symbol and an ideal place to begin a pilgrimage.
During their three-day journey, the group of pilgrims also passed through Gospić, the administrative and cultural center of Lika-Senj County. Their arrival in Gospić was marked by a short but cordial stop at Stjepan Radić Square. There, they were greeted by the deputy county prefect, Ms. Jasna Orešković Brkljačić, who offered words of welcome and support, wishing them luck and blessings on their further journey. This meeting emphasized the importance that the local community attaches to the development of the Camino Lika project and the support it provides to pilgrims. Gospić, as a key point on the route, offers a variety of options for rest and refreshment, as well as quality accommodation.
Along the paths of history and natural beauty
The section from Udbina to Smiljan, approximately one hundred kilometers long when considering the entire planned Camino Lika route (which will eventually be even longer), has been carefully traced to provide pilgrims with insight into the diversity of the Lika landscape. Passing through places like Podlapača and Bilaj, pilgrims could witness traditional architecture, learn about local customs, and feel the warmth of Lika's hospitality. Podlapača and Bilaj, with their authentic atmosphere, represent gems of rural tourism and offer an opportunity to escape from hectic everyday life. When preparing for the trip, many pilgrims explore accommodation options in Bilaj to ensure a pleasant stay.
The trail is marked with recognizable yellow arrows and the symbol of the shell (vieira), the universal sign of the Way of St. James, which safely guide pilgrims through the landscape. In addition to the physical challenge, Camino Lika also offers rich cultural content. From sacral buildings that preserve centuries-old spirituality, to natural phenomena such as Krbava Field or the proximity of the Lika River, each segment of the trail tells its own story. Lika is a region of exceptional biodiversity, and this route allows direct contact with its forests, pastures, and mountain views, providing a sense of peace and connection with nature. Maintenance and clear marking of the trail are crucial for a pleasant and safe pilgrimage experience, and local teams are making significant efforts to ensure the route is flawless.
Smiljan – the crown of the pilgrimage and a symbolic end
The journey reached its peak in Smiljan, a place that carries special symbolic and spiritual significance. Smiljan is not only the birthplace of the world-famous inventor Nikola Tesla, whose Memorial Center attracts visitors from all over the world, but it was also chosen as an emotionally powerful endpoint for this section of Camino Lika. It was here, in an environment that exudes history and genius, that all participants who successfully completed the given route received the Compostela – the official pilgrim's certificate. The Compostela is not just a document; it is a symbol of perseverance, spiritual searching, and personal achievement. For many pilgrims, receiving the Compostela represents the crown of their journey, tangible proof of the path traveled and experiences lived.
The ceremonial awarding of Compostelas in Smiljan marked the official end of the three-day inaugural pilgrimage. It was a moment filled with joy, pride, and a sense of community among the pilgrims. The experiences gained during these three days – prayer, walking through untouched nature, encounters with other pilgrims and local people – left a deep mark on everyone present. Camino Lika was thus officially inscribed on the map of European pilgrimage routes, becoming a new, valuable stage that enriches the spiritual and cultural heritage of Croatia. Accommodation in Smiljan allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this special place.
The future of Camino Lika and its importance for the region
The opening of the first section of Camino Lika is just the beginning of a larger story. Further expansion and arrangement of trails are planned, which will cover an even larger part of Lika, connecting it with other Camino routes in Croatia and neighboring countries. The development of this form of tourism has multiple benefits for the region. In addition to promoting natural and cultural beauties, it encourages the development of small businesses, rural households offering accommodation and authentic products, and creates new value for the local community. Lika, with its vastness, peace, and quiet, is an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from the city bustle and an opportunity for introspection. Researching accommodation capacities in Udbina shows a growing interest in this type of tourism.
The global phenomenon of the Camino, the Way of St. James, attracts millions of people annually, and Croatia, with its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and Christian tradition, has enormous potential to become a significant destination on that map. Camino Lika, with its specific features and the authentic experience it offers, will certainly contribute to this goal. Investment in infrastructure, promotion, and education is crucial for the long-term success of the project. It is also important to emphasize cooperation with the local population, whose hospitality and willingness to share their culture and tradition with pilgrims add a special charm to the whole experience. Creating a network of "Camino friendly" facilities, from accommodation capacities to catering establishments, will further improve the quality of the offer. Travel agencies are already showing interest in including Camino Lika in their arrangements, which will further increase the visibility and accessibility of the route to international pilgrims. The support the project received from local authorities, such as that shown during the reception of pilgrims in Gospić, is crucial for its further development and sustainability. Camino Lika is expected to attract not only believers but also all lovers of nature, hiking, and culture, eager to discover lesser-known but exceptionally valuable parts of Europe. This pilgrimage is not only a physical journey but also a journey into oneself, an opportunity for spiritual growth and renewal.
The spirituality of the trail is felt at every step, from the silence of Krbava Field to the forest paths leading towards Smiljan. Many pilgrims emphasize that it was their stay in nature, far from noise and stress, that helped them connect with themselves and find answers to important life questions. Lika, with its untouched nature, provides ideal conditions for such an experience. Preparations for this inaugural pilgrimage lasted for months, including marking the trail, ensuring logistical support, and promoting the event. The large turnout of pilgrims is confirmation that the project has been recognized and that there is great interest in such content. Every detail, from the choice of resting places to the organization of meetings with the local community, was carefully planned to provide pilgrims with the most complete and rich experience possible. Digital upgrades are also being considered, such as a mobile application with maps, information about sights, and available accommodation along the route, to make it easier for pilgrims to plan and navigate.
