Red Velvet is preparing a full-group comeback, with the album expected in August

Red Velvet, one of the most recognizable South Korean third-generation female K-pop groups, is preparing a full-group comeback according to new media reports. As Chosun Ilbo English reported on June 11, 2026, citing Sports Chosun, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri are currently working on a new album with the aim of releasing it in August. The official release date, the title of the release and the schedule of promotional activities have not yet been announced, so the comeback at this moment should be viewed as a plan that is still awaiting final public confirmation from the record company. Still, the very information that the five members are gathering around a new project has sparked great interest because it would be Red Velvet's first full-group album after a longer discographic break. According to the same report, the gap would amount to approximately two years and two months since the mini album Cosmic, which was released in June 2024 on the occasion of the group's tenth anniversary.

A comeback that carries additional weight because of changes in contracts

The announced activity is especially important because of the status of Wendy and Yeri, whose individual contracts with SM Entertainment changed in April 2025. According to the announcement reported at the time by Soompi, SM Entertainment stated on April 4, 2025, that Wendy and Yeri's exclusive contracts with the agency had expired. The same statement noted that the two members would continue to participate in Red Velvet's group activities, while their individual careers would no longer be managed by SM Entertainment. This means that the new album, if released according to the current plan, would be Red Velvet's first major musical project after the members' individual business paths diverged. Such a model is not unusual in the K-pop industry, but it requires additional coordination between multiple management structures, schedules and promotional obligations.

For Red Velvet, such an arrangement also has symbolic value. Since their debut in 2014, the group has built its identity on a recognizable blend of two concepts: the more lively, pop-oriented “red” expression and the more sophisticated “velvet” sound with a stronger reliance on R&B and vocal harmonies. It was precisely this flexibility that enabled the group over the years to move between summer pop singles, more experimental dance releases and more mature vocal songs without completely abandoning its own identity. That is why a potential comeback in August will not be viewed only as a new entry on the K-pop release calendar, but also as a test of the sustainability of the group brand in a phase in which the members are simultaneously developing solo careers. According to available information, none of the five members has been excluded from preparations for the new project.

What is known so far about the new album

According to the Chosun Ilbo English report, Red Velvet is preparing an album with the aim of releasing it in August 2026, but details about the format of the release have not yet been confirmed. It has not been officially announced whether it will be a mini album, a single album or a longer studio project. It is also not known how many songs the release will contain, who the writers, producers and choreographers are, or whether the group will carry out standard television promotions on South Korean music programs. In the K-pop industry, such details are usually announced gradually, through an announcement schedule, concept photos, video teasers and a tracklist. For that reason, at this stage it is most precise to say that, according to the media report, this is a planned comeback, not a fully confirmed promotional campaign.

If the August timeframe is confirmed, the comeback would fit into a period in which Red Velvet traditionally has a strong connection with summer concepts. During its career, the group has often been associated with songs of a brighter and seasonally recognizable sound, among which summer singles from earlier phases of its career stand out in particular. Chosun Ilbo English described the group in its report as the “original summer queens”, which reflects the perception Red Velvet has built on the South Korean pop scene. Still, such labels say more about the group's reputation than about the confirmed sound of the new album. Without official teasers and song descriptions, it is currently not possible to reliably conclude whether the new release will continue the summer pop line or reach for a darker and more sophisticated “velvet” approach.

The last group album was the anniversary Cosmic

Red Velvet's last group release, the mini album Cosmic, was released on June 24, 2024. According to SM Entertainment's announcement at the time, the album contained the title track of the same name and a total of six songs in the original version of the release. In promotional material, the agency described the title track as a pop dance composition that combines bass guitar, drums, synth strings and a disco rhythm, along with vocal harmonies that are an important part of Red Velvet's recognizable sound. SM Entertainment also stated that KENZIE, a longtime writer and producer connected with a series of releases by SM artists, participated in work on the title track. That album had additional value because it was tied to the tenth anniversary of the group's career, which made it an important point in Red Velvet's discography.

The reaction to Cosmic confirmed that the group, despite increasingly long gaps between releases, still has a stable international audience. According to Soompi's June 2024 report, after its release the mini album took first place on iTunes Top Albums charts in at least 41 regions, including major markets such as the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Such a result does not represent a complete picture of the commercial reach of the release, but it shows the breadth of digital demand and the engagement of international listeners. For a group that was marking ten years of activity at the time of release, this was an important indicator that audience interest was not limited only to nostalgia. That is precisely why the new album, if it is released in August 2026, is expected as a continuation of the story that with Cosmic received an anniversary framework, but not a final point.

Why the comeback is important for the K-pop calendar

Red Velvet's potential comeback enters a period in which the global music market continues to grow, while K-pop competes for audience attention in an increasingly saturated digital space. According to the Global Music Report 2026 by the IFPI organization, global recorded music revenues in 2025 grew by 6.4 percent and reached 31.7 billion U.S. dollars. IFPI states that this is the eleventh consecutive year of growth, with paid streaming services remaining one of the key drivers of the market. In such an environment, the comeback of an established K-pop group does not depend only on physical album sales, but also on visibility on streaming platforms, social networks, short video formats and international fandom channels. Red Velvet belongs to the group of artists whose recognizability was built before the current dominance of TikTok and short video trends, but whose music is still distributed through new listening patterns.

For the K-pop industry, veteran-group comebacks have a different logic from the debuts of new groups. New groups often rely on rapid growth, aggressive promotional cycles and constant expansion of the fandom, while established artists must align the expectations of a long-standing audience with changes in sound and visual identity. In that sense, Red Velvet is in a sensitive but potentially very rewarding position. On the one hand, the public expects a recognizable combination of vocal quality, conceptual aesthetics and unusual production solutions. On the other hand, the members are in a career phase in which they can choose projects more clearly and balance group obligations with solo work in music, acting, hosting and other areas of the entertainment industry.

The members remain the key reason for audience interest

Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri are perceived by the public not only as members of one group, but also as individual performers with different professional profiles. Over the years, Seulgi has built a reputation as a strong dancer and stable vocalist, Wendy is recognized as one of the most prominent vocals of her generation in K-pop, Joy has developed a music and acting career, Irene is an important visual and performance center of the group, while Yeri has gradually developed her own public presence from the position of the youngest member. Such diversity increases interest in the group comeback because each member brings to the joint project separate experience gained outside group promotions. In the case of the new album, the question will not be only what sound Red Velvet will choose, but also how the members' individual careers will fit into the joint performance.

The change in Wendy and Yeri's contractual relationships is therefore not only a business footnote, but an important part of the broader picture. According to SM Entertainment's statement from April 2025, the two members remain connected with the agency for Red Velvet's group activities, which opens the possibility of continuing joint projects despite separate management of solo careers. Such a model can be challenging, but it can also have advantages: the members can develop their own artistic directions, while group comebacks can be treated as rarer and more carefully planned events. For the audience, this often means a longer wait, but also greater weight for each new release. That is exactly why the announcement of the August album is read as confirmation that Red Velvet remains an active project, and not only a name tied to previous decades of K-pop history.

Caution until the official confirmation of the date

Despite great interest, it is important to distinguish a media report from an official announcement. As of June 12, 2026, the official album title, exact release date, visual concept, tracklist and detailed promotional schedule have not been announced. For now, the firmest available information is that, according to Sports Chosun and Chosun Ilbo English, the group is preparing for a comeback with the aim of releasing it in August. In practice, plans in the K-pop industry can change because of production deadlines, members' schedules, agency decisions or adjustments to the promotional calendar. For that reason, formulations such as “is expected”, “according to available information” and “if the plan is confirmed” are more precise than claims that the date has already been finalized. Such caution is especially important in situations when the official agency has not yet released full promotional material.

If the project is confirmed in the announced form, Red Velvet could return in one of the most visible parts of the summer K-pop season. An August slot could allow the group to combine seasonal recognizability with the narrative of a full-group comeback after changes in individual contracts. At the same time, expectations will be high because audiences often associate Red Velvet with conceptually elaborate releases, strong vocal arrangements and songs that do not rely only on the current trend. The new album could therefore have a dual role: to show how the group sounds after a period of change and to confirm that its shared identity can be maintained despite the members' different solo paths. Until the official announcement, the comeback remains one of the most closely followed announced K-pop events of summer 2026.
