In February 2025, in the area of Valdebek near Pula, an extensive afforestation action began with the aim of restoring the forest cover destroyed in the 2022 fire. During the three-day initiative, a total of 10,000 seedlings of holm oak and hop hornbeam, indigenous species characteristic of the Istrian landscape, are planned to be planted. This commendable action brought together numerous volunteers, including members of the Croatian Scout Association, students from local schools, and employees from Valamar and Arena Hospitality Group.

Collaboration of the local community and companies

On the first day of afforestation, February 6, volunteers from Valamar participated, while on the second day, February 7, employees of Arena Hospitality Group joined. The final day, February 8, was dedicated to the general public, and the turnout of citizens was exceptional. The Mayor of Pula, Filip Zoričić, also supported the initiative with his participation, emphasizing the importance of such projects for environmental protection and the sustainable development of the local community.

Valamar’s commitment to sustainability

Valamar Riviera, as the leading tourism company in Croatia, continuously invests in sustainable development projects. Their sustainability strategy is based on six strategic initiatives, including decarbonization, responsible water and waste management, and the development of local communities. Their goal is to achieve a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per occupied accommodation unit by 2026 and ensure that 80% of the food in their facilities comes from local suppliers.

Wider perspective: Sustainable tourism in Croatia

This afforestation action is part of a broader trend in Croatian tourism that increasingly emphasizes sustainability and ecological responsibility. Examples such as the Valamar Amicor Green Resort on Hvar, the first eco-resort in Croatia, show how the principles of sustainable development can be implemented in tourism offerings. The resort was built using environmentally friendly materials, uses 100% green energy, and sources 78% of its food from local suppliers. Importance of afforestation for the ecosystem

Afforestation plays a key role in preserving biodiversity, preventing soil erosion, and mitigating climate change. By planting indigenous species such as holm oak and hop hornbeam, the restoration of natural habitats and the preservation of ecological balance is supported. Such initiatives not only revitalize damaged ecosystems but also educate the public about the importance of environmental protection.

The afforestation action at Valdebek represents a great example of cooperation between the local community, the private sector, and educational institutions in the goal of preserving natural heritage. Such projects contribute to sustainable development and raising awareness about the importance of ecological responsibility, ensuring a better future for future generations.
