Baške Oštarije Trail 2026 brings a battle for the national team, points and one of Velebit’s toughest challenges
Baške Oštarije Trail 2026, also known as BOŠT, will be held on Saturday, 13 June 2026, in the area of Karlobag and Baške Oštarije, organized by the Velebit 2001 Athletic Club. It is a sporting event that has gained additional weight in the trail and skyrunning calendar this year because, according to the published race announcements, it has the status of a qualifying competition for the Skyrunning Croatia national team and is part of the Croatian Trail League. In practice, this means that the start on Velebit will not be merely a recreational outing in the mountains, but also a serious test of form for runners aiming for a national-team appearance, domestic points and international visibility. The organizers are announcing three routes of different levels of difficulty, from a family and recreational section to the toughest sky race, which will require experience, strength, technical confidence and good judgment of one’s own pace.
This year’s edition comes one week after 6 June 2026, in the period when Velebit enters the summer outdoor season, while still retaining the characteristics of serious mountain terrain. Baške Oštarije are located on a pass that connects the Lika hinterland and the Podvelebit coastal area, so the race naturally combines two different images of the same space: rocky, karst, mountain relief and open views toward the sea. It is precisely this contrast that gives BOŠT its recognizable identity. Participants do not come only for a competition, but also for the experience of running through an area where speed constantly collides with climbs, stones, forest sections and the changing rhythm of the trail.
The biggest stakes are carried by the toughest section
The most attention is drawn by Sky BOŠT, the most demanding race in the program, approximately 29 kilometres long with about 2100 metres of positive elevation gain. This profile clearly shows that this is not a classic trail section where only speed decides the outcome, but a race in which climbing ability, stability on technical descents and maturity in distributing energy play a decisive role. The Velebit terrain does not allow passive running: competitors must constantly read the surface, adjust their stride and make decisions that may be important in the final kilometres. In such conditions, the advantage often belongs to those who know how to remain calm even when the trail becomes slower than expected.
The sporting importance of this section has been strengthened this year by the qualification context. The International Skyrunning Federation has announced that the 2026 Skyrunning World Championships will be held from 18 to 20 September on La Gomera in Spain, in the Canary Islands, with the Vertical, SkyUltra and Sky disciplines. According to the rules stated by the ISF, participants in the World Championships compete through national selections, and national members may select a limited number of competitors per discipline. For that reason, domestic qualifying races are viewed as much more than an individual result: they are part of a broader selection picture and an opportunity to show form on terrain that, at least in terms of difficulty and vertical profile, demands precisely the qualities needed for the international sky scene.
Three trails for different participant profiles
The organizers have prepared three formats for BOŠT 2026. Family Time is 7 kilometres long and is intended for families, beginners, recreational runners and everyone who wants to be part of the event without entering the most demanding competitive rhythm. Such shorter sections are important for the development of the trail scene because they open the event to a wider audience and bring the mountain closer even to those who may only be entering the world of running away from asphalt. In addition, they create the atmosphere of a sporting weekend, rather than only a narrowly specialized competition for experienced runners.
The middle section, BOŠT 4 You, is about 15 kilometres long and has approximately 1100 metres of ascent. It is intended for participants who want a serious sporting challenge but are not entering the full format of the toughest sky race. Such a trail usually attracts runners who already have trail experience, know how to move over uneven terrain and want to test their form on a Velebit climb, while still keeping a shorter race time frame. Because of the ratio between length and elevation gain, the middle section can be just as intense as considerably longer races, especially if it is run at a strong pace.
The longest format, Sky BOŠT, is reserved for the best prepared and most experienced. With 29 kilometres and about 2100 metres of ascent, this section requires a combination of endurance and technical knowledge. Its importance this year does not come only from the result at the finish line, but also from the fact that, according to the race announcement, a battle for the national-team jersey is expected on it. For participants coming from outside the Karlobag and Baške Oštarije area, it is practical to plan arrival, race-pack pickup and accommodation near the event venue in good time, especially because on race day traffic and movement in the mountain area may be adjusted to the organizer’s schedule.
- Family Time – 7 kilometres, a recreational and family section for an easier entry into the trail atmosphere.
- BOŠT 4 You – about 15 kilometres and approximately 1100 metres of ascent, a middle trail for runners who want a pronounced mountain challenge.
- Sky BOŠT – about 29 kilometres and approximately 2100 metres of ascent, the most demanding section and the centre of the competitive battle.
Strong domestic and international competition is expected at the start
According to the organizer’s announcement, strong regional and international competition is expected at the start, with competitors from Hungary, Romania, Poland, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. Such a start-list composition is important for the race because it gives domestic runners a direct comparison with competitors from different trail and mountain environments. On terrains such as Velebit, the winner is not necessarily only the fastest road-running profile, but the runner who knows how to connect the climb, descent, technical section and changes of pace. For that reason, international competition can further raise the quality of the race and make the fight for the top more uncertain.
In the women’s competition, Ivana Širić has been announced, highlighted in the announcement as the leading Croatian trail runner and national-team member. Alongside her, Maja Urban, Petra Kontić, Dijana Butorac, Petra Kulić and Martina Pattiera are mentioned, names that should bring a strong fight for a high placing. In the men’s competition, Eric Stipić, Marko Gorički, Mateo Ledinski and Andrej Vištica have been announced, the former top triathlete who has also been present in trail running and coaching work in recent years. The organizers also specifically announce Danijel Krstulović Opara, who is expected to try himself on the trail, but also to hold an educational lecture for running enthusiasts as part of the camp in Šušanj.
Such a combination of competition and educational program is important for the development of the trail community. Mountain races are not only a matter of personal results, but also of a culture of safe movement, preparation, nutrition, equipment and understanding of the terrain. Lectures by experienced athletes can help recreational runners better understand why one should not enter the mountains lightly, and give competitors an additional professional perspective on training, recovery and strategy. In events such as BOŠT, it is precisely on this boundary between elite athletes and recreational runners that a broader scene is built, one that becomes better and safer over time.
Velebit as a sporting backdrop and a serious natural space
Velebit Nature Park officially presents itself as the largest protected area in Croatia. According to data from the Velebit Nature Park Public Institution, it is an area of exceptional natural values, relief diversity and rich biological heritage. This fact gives the sporting event an additional context: running on Velebit is not only passing along a trail, but entering a protected landscape where responsible behaviour is expected from participants, support crews and visitors. Organizing such a race therefore requires aligning the sporting rhythm with the rules of safety, nature protection and respect for the space through which it passes.
In its information on hiking, the Velebit Nature Park Public Institution warns that suitable footwear and clothing, as well as a sufficient quantity of drinking water and prior information about weather conditions, are needed on mountain trails. Although trail races take place in an organized format, these rules remain equally important. A competitor setting out on 15 or 29 kilometres of Velebit terrain must count on the possibility of temperature changes, exposed sections, sharper rocks and a physical drop in concentration after longer climbs. That is precisely why BOŠT is not a race that should be underestimated, even in the shorter formats.
For Baške Oštarije and Karlobag, the race also has broader local significance. Sporting events in the preseason and at the beginning of summer bring visitors who often stay longer than just the start and finish, use local services and additionally draw attention to the area of central Velebit. Since the event includes recreational runners, families, competitors and support crews, interest is not limited only to the sporting result. Visitors planning an entire weekend in this area may naturally find accommodation offers in Karlobag and Baške Oštarije useful, especially if they want to combine the race with time spent in nature.
The road to La Gomera begins on Velebit’s rocky trails
The 2026 Skyrunning World Championships on La Gomera bring completely different geography, but a similar logic of competition: steep climbs, technical sections, a changing rhythm and the need to withstand the pressure of a mountain race. The ISF has announced that the Sky discipline at the championships will be held on 20 September on a 29-kilometre course with 1900 metres of ascent, while SkyUltra will have 62 kilometres and 4400 metres of ascent, and Vertical 4.9 kilometres with 950 metres of ascent. In that context, Sky BOŠT, by its profile, appears to be a serious test for runners who want to impose themselves for national-team selection, because it combines the approximate length of the sky format with an even greater elevation gain than the one listed for the world Sky race.
For Croatian competitors, this means that a path toward the international stage can open on Velebit, but also that the result will need to be achieved in direct competition. National-team appearances in skyrunning do not depend only on ambition, but on measurable performance in races that selectors and national systems recognize as relevant. That is why BOŠT 2026 will be interesting not only to participants, but also to everyone following the development of Croatian trail running, mountain running and skyrunning. On one trail, the local identity of Velebit, the domestic trail league, international points interest and the goal leading toward the Canary Islands will meet.
More than a race: a test of readiness, safety and respect for the mountain
Baške Oštarije Trail 2026 has been announced as one of the most striking sporting events on Velebit this season. Its value lies not only in the attractive landscape, but in the layers of competitive meaning: the race is connected with national-team qualifications, scoring in the Croatian Trail League and international trail interest. For the best prepared, it will be a battle for placing and confirmation of form; for recreational runners, an opportunity for a powerful mountain experience; and for the local community, an event that further highlights Karlobag, Baške Oštarije and central Velebit as an area of active tourism.
The organizers are announcing a sporting weekend in which running, education, competition and time in nature will be combined into an event open to different participant profiles. Still, Velebit remains a space that requires a serious approach. Participants should arrive prepared, with equipment adapted to mountain terrain, a realistic assessment of their own form and respect for the trail. It is precisely such an approach that distinguishes trail running from an ordinary race: the result is important, but safety, responsibility and awareness that one is running through one of the most valuable natural areas in Croatia are equally important.
