MERCATINO Arts & Crafts brings creators and the public together again on the Rovinj waterfront at the end of June
MERCATINO Arts & Crafts will take place on 24 and 25 June 2026 on Obala Pina Budicina in Rovinj, in the area of the Rovinj waterfront below the old town core. According to the announcement by the Rovinj-Rovigno Tourist Board and the Istria County Tourist Board, it is a fair that brings together artists, creatives, craftspeople and small authorial brands, with an emphasis on direct encounters between creators and visitors. On the first day, Wednesday 24 June, the fair will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., while on the second day, Thursday 25 June, the announced working hours are from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The organiser is the REkreator association, and the official contact for the event is listed as the telephone number +385(0)98932392 and the address udruga.rekreator@gmail.com.
The event is conceived as an open space for presenting authorial work, small workshops, ateliers, family crafts and creative productions that rely on handmade work, design and the author’s personal touch. According to the official event announcement, visitors will be able to view artistic and utilitarian objects, original souvenirs, illustrations, design works, handicrafts and other unique creations. Unlike classic sales events, the emphasis is not only on purchasing, but also on talking with the creators, getting to know the process behind the creation of individual objects and understanding the story behind the product. Such a format gives the fair the character of a cultural and social encounter, not only a seasonal sales event.
A fair that connects creativity, craftsmanship and a Mediterranean atmosphere
The Rovinj waterfront, with a view towards the sea and the old town core, is an important part of the event’s identity. According to the description by the Istria County Tourist Board, the special character of MERCATINO does not arise only from the exhibitors’ offer, but also from the atmosphere created when creative works are presented in the Mediterranean setting of the town. During the fair, visitors can walk by the sea, browse the stalls and speak directly with the people behind the exhibited objects. In this setting, authorial work is not presented as an anonymous product, but as the result of skill, time, an idea and personal experience.
The fair’s offer is focused on objects that differ from mass production and standardised tourist souvenirs. The official announcement highlights works created in small workshops, ateliers and family crafts, which brings the event closer to the trend of searching for locally produced, handmade and recognisably designed objects. Such fairs in tourist destinations often have a dual role: they offer visitors content during their stay, while giving creators visibility and a direct route to the market without the intermediary framework of large sales systems. In the case of Rovinj, this model additionally relies on the strong visual identity of the town and its recognisability as a summer destination.
MERCATINO is particularly interesting because it does not separate art, craft and everyday utilitarian aesthetics. In the same space, one can find objects with decorative value, objects intended for everyday use, illustrations, souvenirs, design and handmade creations. Such a combination broadens the circle of the audience, because the fair is not intended only for collectors or art connoisseurs, but also for visitors looking for a travel memory, a gift or an object with a clear authorial signature. Precisely for this reason, for visitors coming from outside Rovinj it is practical to check accommodation near the Rovinj waterfront in advance, especially because the programme on the second day takes place during almost the entire day.
A direct encounter with creators as the main value of the event
According to the official description of the event, MERCATINO places strong emphasis on personal contact between creators and visitors. This element is important because it allows the buyer to learn more about an object than the basic information about its material, price or purpose. The creator can explain how the work was created, which technique was used, how long the making process takes and how a particular object differs from serial production. For small brands and independent creatives, such a conversation is often just as important as the sale itself, because it helps build recognition and trust.
In this way, the fair also functions as a place for exchanging experiences among exhibitors. Creatives, craftspeople and small producers at events like this get the opportunity to see how the public reacts to their works, which products visitors comment on the most and which stories are more easily conveyed through direct contact. Such feedback can rarely be obtained through online sales or a classic shop, because direct communication is absent. In that sense, MERCATINO is not only a sales point, but also a platform for the development of small authorial brands.
Glas Istre reported in its announcement of this year’s programme that MERCATINO Arts & Crafts is returning to Rovinj as a summer fair of creators from Croatia and abroad, and that the new season begins precisely with the 24 and 25 June dates. The same source reported that several more dates will be held during the summer on the Rovinj waterfront. According to the organiser’s statement carried by Glas Istre, the aim of the project is to give creators the opportunity to present themselves in one of the most recognisable Mediterranean destinations, while enabling visitors to encounter authentic creativity. The organisers also point out that the event attracts more and more exhibitors and visitors from year to year, gradually establishing itself as a place of creative encounters in Rovinj’s summer calendar.
REkreator as organiser and the development of the fair from a local initiative
On its official website, the REkreator association states that it organises several cultural and creative events, including ARTISTICO, MERCATINO Arts and Crafts and ART PLAC. According to the association’s description, these projects are directed towards supporting artists, creatives and small producers, as well as towards creating spaces in which the public can encounter authentic creativity. Within that framework, MERCATINO is presented as an event in Rovinj that brings together domestic and handmade products, and REkreator describes it as a project that attracts the attention of the public and citizens with recognisable content on the town waterfront.
The beginning of the project is connected with an initiative by local producers. As early as 2020, the City of Rovinj-Rovigno announced that the REkreator association was launching MERCATINO as a fair of domestic and local products, with the aim of bringing together local production and traditional crafts, family farms, artists and creatives. In the city’s announcement at the time, it was stated that the project was being developed in order to bring Rovinj’s authentic offer closer to visitors, with the possibility of purchasing, production presentations and tastings. In that initial phase, the offer included products of domestic and ecological production, among them olive oil, wine, honey, lavender products, handmade cosmetics, utilitarian and decorative objects, souvenirs and jewellery.
This development shows how MERCATINO gradually expanded from a local fair of domestic and ecological production towards a broader concept of art, design, handicrafts and small authorial brands. Official tourist announcements for earlier dates emphasised that the fair has been held continuously since 2020 and that it has become a recognisable place for buying unique handmade utilitarian and decorative objects, souvenirs and design products directly from their creators. Although each date is connected with a specific season and schedule, the continuity of the event gives it additional weight in Rovinj’s summer offer.
Rovinj as a natural stage for authorial fairs
The broader context of the event is important because Rovinj has for decades had a strong connection with artistic content and the public presentation of authorial work. In its description of Rovinj’s cultural offer, the Istria County Tourist Board recalls Grisia, the well-known one-day open-air exhibition that was first held in 1967. According to that source, Rovinj was already recognised at that time as a town of artists, and the idea of an open-air exhibition developed after visitors showed interest in the works of local authors. Over time, Grisia became one of the best-known symbols of Rovinj’s cultural scene, and its example shows how important the public space of the old town can be for the encounter between art and the public.
MERCATINO does not adopt the same format as Grisia, but it uses a related logic: authorial work leaves enclosed gallery and sales spaces and is presented where people naturally move. In summer Rovinj, this is particularly important because cultural content does not take place only in institutions, but also in squares, streets, on the waterfront and in spaces that are part of everyday urban life. Such an approach can also attract those visitors who would not deliberately go to an exhibition or gallery, but will stop in front of a stall, talk with the creator and discover an object that interests them. In this way, the cultural offer is brought closer to a wider audience without lowering the value of authorial work.
The Istrian Tourist Board describes Rovinj as one of the most photogenic Mediterranean towns, a former fishing settlement and today’s tourist destination, and also states that the entire coast with 22 islands is an area of protected natural heritage. Such a spatial and cultural framework increases the visibility of events like MERCATINO, but at the same time requires organisers and exhibitors to fit carefully into the urban environment. A fair held on the waterfront must remain clear, accessible and harmonised in content with the space in which it takes place. Precisely for this reason, the emphasis on smaller creators, handmade work and original objects is especially suitable for a destination that relies on the connection of heritage, the sea and visual identity.
What visitors can expect on 24 and 25 June
The MERCATINO programme does not have the character of a classic festival timetable with performances at precisely defined times, but is based on the continuous operation of exhibition points. On the first day, according to the announced working hours, visitors will be able to visit the fair in the evening slot from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The second day brings a significantly longer programme, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., which enables visits during the morning, afternoon or evening. Such a schedule suits both the local public and guests who want to fit the programme into a walk through the town, a stay by the sea or an evening outing.
Visitors can expect the largest part of the experience to depend on conversations with exhibitors and the diversity of the offer. The official announcements do not state a final list of creators for this date, so at present it is not possible to confirm all individual participants. However, according to the event description, the programme framework includes artistic and utilitarian objects, authorial souvenirs, design, illustrations, handicrafts and other creative products. For visitors, this means that the fair should be seen as a place of exploration, not as an event with a strictly predefined sequence of activities.
An important practical detail is the location on Obala Pina Budicina, in the central part of Rovinj. Because of the summer date and the evening working hours, greater movement of people can be expected on the waterfront and in the old town core, especially if weather conditions are favourable. Official announcements for earlier MERCATINO dates stated that the fair could be cancelled in case of rain, but for the 24 and 25 June date, the available announcement specifically confirms the working hours, location and organiser. Visitors are therefore advised to check the latest notice from the organiser or tourist websites before arrival if the weather forecast is unfavourable.
The broader significance for small creators and the town’s tourist offer
Fairs like MERCATINO have a significance that goes beyond an individual weekend or two-day date. For small creators and craftspeople, they represent an opportunity to appear before the public in a highly visited destination, but also a way to present one’s own work in a context that values originality. In tourism, especially in towns with strong seasonal visitation, such content can help distinguish the local offer from generic souvenirs and products that can be found in almost every destination. When a visitor has the opportunity to talk with the creator, a travel memory gains a more personal character.
For Rovinj, MERCATINO fits into the broader image of a destination that does not rely only on the sea and walks through the old town core, but also on cultural, creative and local content. Researching official tourist calendars shows that the summer months in Rovinj are filled with various events, from exhibitions and guided tours to music, traditional and gastronomic programmes. In this series, MERCATINO occupies the place of an event that is accessible to a wide audience, does not require special preparation and can be spontaneously fitted into a stay in the town. Its advantage lies precisely in its openness: a visitor can come briefly, browse the offer, talk with the creators or stay longer among the stalls.
Organisationally speaking, the event is also an example of how associations can shape cultural-tourist content in cooperation with local space and the public. Through its projects, REkreator seeks to create platforms for artists and creatives, and MERCATINO is the Rovinj part of that activity. If the interest of exhibitors and visitors continues to grow, the fair can further strengthen its position in the town’s seasonal calendar. For now, it has been confirmed that the first date of this year will take place on 24 and 25 June, and according to the Glas Istre announcement, several more dates are planned during the summer at the same attractive location.
