Špancirfest enters its second half: street spectacles, Ljubaf, French chansons and Cargodusjet mark 26 August
Špancirfest entered the second half of its ten-day programme on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, but the pace in Varaždin's historic centre is not slowing down. The sixth festival day brings a new combination of street theatre, musical performances, theatre, French chansons, children's activities and an evening concert in the zone next to Stari grad. According to official information from the organiser, the 28th edition of Špancirfest runs from 21 to 30 August and includes around 600 programmes spread across 23 festival zones, so the middle of the week is also treated as a full festival day rather than a break between two weekends. The programme on 26 August particularly highlights what the festival is known for: the streets and squares are not merely spaces between the large stages, but independent stages where musicians, performers and visual spectacles alternate throughout the afternoon and evening.
The first five days have already brought audiences an intensive series of concerts, performances and street encounters. Špancirfest's official daily announcement states that on 25 August the Spanish Sidral Brass Band carried a blend of brass sound, rhythm and Mediterranean temperament through the streets, while Crazy Mozarts drew the audience into a different, intentionally chaotic combination of music and humour. Seine opened the evening on the PAN pozornica Stari grad, after which Zoster performed and took over the finale of the programme at the main concert location. The sixth day brings a different schedule: the PAN stage takes a break, but the programme moves to Korzo, Franjevački trg, Vila Bedeković, atriums in the historic centre, Park kreative and the Carlsberg Food & Party zone.
Crazy Mozarts once again combine classical music and stage chaos
Crazy Mozarts continue their Varaždin programme on 26 August at Trg kralja Tomislava. The performer's official Špancirfest page lists performances at 17:00 and 19:30, each lasting 45 minutes. The concept is designed as a playful deconstruction of a classical concert: instead of a strictly predictable performance, the emphasis is on surprises, humour and unexpected twists that draw the audience into the performance itself. Such a format fits well with the street character of Špancirfest, where the boundary between the stage and the audience is often reduced to just a few steps of space on a city square.
For visitors who follow the programme without a predetermined schedule, performances like these are among the festival's most recognisable features. The performers are not isolated from city life, but become part of the movement through the centre of Varaždin, among hospitality zones, exhibitors, creative activities and other programmes. The official festival schedule for 26 August also places Crazy Mozarts on Korzo at 17:00 and 19:30, meaning their timetable matches across several official pages.
Sidral Brass Band returns to the streets, but official channels list different times
Sidral Brass Band returns after a performance that marked the previous day. The organiser describes them as a ten-member group from Spain, led by an entertainer, with a prominent sound of saxophones, trumpets and trombones and choreography conceived as a moving street show. Their Red Wine Cabaret relies on brass energy, rhythm and direct communication with the audience, which allows the performance to work even for passers-by who happen to encounter the programme by chance.
However, there is currently a discrepancy within the official sources regarding their timetable. Špancirfest's daily announcement of 26 August states that Sidral Brass Band performs at 17:30 and 20:30. At the same time, the separate official performer page and the daily programme calendar show times of 17:00 and 19:30 at Trg kralja Tomislava – Korzo. Since the official channels do not display completely identical times, visitors specifically planning to attend their performance are advised to check the organiser's latest schedule shortly before setting out. The fact that this type of programme takes place in a public space also makes it easier to follow any possible change of location or time through festival notices on site.
Aurora in Motion transforms Franjevački trg into a fantasy scene
One of the day's most visually striking programmes is presented by the Italian collective Parola Bianca with its performance Aurora in Motion. According to the official programme, performances are scheduled for 17:30 and 20:00 at Franjevački trg by Grgur Ninski, with each lasting approximately 45 minutes. The performance is based on a combination of movement, light, unusual forms and impressive costumes, with tall, otherworldly figures moving through the festival space as though they belong to a world beyond everyday reality.
The organiser describes Aurora in Motion as a performance that erases the boundary between reality and imagination. It is precisely in this type of programme that the difference between a traditional stage and a street performance becomes evident: the architecture of the square, passers-by and the atmosphere of the historic centre become part of the visual impression, while the audience is not tied to numbered seats or a strictly separated area. The first performance begins while the city is still in daylight, while the second at 20:00 allows the costumes and lighting elements to stand out more strongly in the evening atmosphere.
Fantaisie Baroque brings Baroque characters, drums and street theatre
The French artistic collective Moz Drums performs Fantaisie Baroque on 26 August at 18:00 and 20:00. The festival's official description announces extravagant hats, costumed characters, drums, improvised dancing and interaction with the audience, with an aesthetic that deliberately exaggerates Baroque and Rococo motifs. Behind the polished appearance are, as the organiser describes them, unpredictable "aristocratic clowns", so the performance is conceived as a combination of visual spectacle, rhythm and comic street theatre.
Moz Drums have two different projects at Špancirfest 2026, Fantaisie Baroque and The Lighted Drummers. On 26 August, the first is in the spotlight, while the second part of their festival appearance is linked to later days. This ensures that the middle of the festival programme is not limited merely to repeating performers already seen, but continues to build a series of different street scenes that change the appearance and rhythm of the city centre over the ten days.
Ljubaf at Vila Bedeković: the performance begins at 20:30
The theatrical part of the evening leads to Vila Bedeković, where the Kerekesh Teatar performance Ljubaf is scheduled for 20:30, with an announced ending at around 22:00. The official description of the play discusses relationships, love and everyday social, political and economic problems reflected through the lives of its characters. At the centre is Srečko Frljužec, torn between his wife Đurđica and his mother-in-law Štefica, alongside his friend Ivek, neighbour Đuro and a series of situations that generate humour as well as a satirical view of interpersonal relationships.
Špancirfest's daily announcement states that there are no more tickets available for the 26 August performance. At the same time, Eventim's event page at the time of checking still shows a purchase option and a warning that only individual seats remain available in the selected price category, meaning that the current availability information does not fully match. Ticket status should therefore be considered subject to change and checked immediately before purchase or arrival. Visitors staying in the city for several days may also find the accommodation options in Varaždin useful, particularly because of evening programmes ending after 22:00.
From Varaždin to Paris with Love in the atrium of the County Palace
A special musical part of the programme continues the concept of the Secret Musical Experience. According to the organiser's announcement, the previous evening the atrium of the City Hall hosted a performance by Zoran Resnik, Mario Jagec and Igor Matavulj, who performed love songs. On 26 August, both the location and the musical theme change: from 21:00 the atrium of the County Palace becomes the setting for the programme From Varaždin to Paris with Love, dedicated to French chansons.
Such programmes create a different rhythm from major concerts and street spectacles because they use a smaller, architecturally more enclosed space in the historic centre. Instead of a mass stage, the emphasis is on the atmosphere of the location and a thematically rounded musical evening. This approach is one of the ways Špancirfest distributes its content throughout the city: different parts of the centre acquire their own character, while audiences can move during the same day from street theatre to a more intimate musical programme without leaving the festival core.
Cargodusjet from Schaffhausen plays from 21:00 to 23:00
Although PAN pozornica Stari grad has no concert programme on 26 August, the musical evening next to Stari grad continues in the Carlsberg Food & Party zone. The Swiss band Cargodusjet from Schaffhausen performs there from 21:00 to 23:00. The official descriptions by the band and festival place their sound between pop, rock, funk and soul, with an emphasis on a strong rhythm and groove, making the evening slot a more dance-oriented conclusion to the day.
The connection between Schaffhausen and Varaždin is not merely a festival formulation. The City of Varaždin lists Schaffhausen among its partner cities, and the Cooperation Charter between the two cities was signed in 2019. The cities have developed cooperation in the cultural, educational, sporting and economic fields, while official city announcements record contacts and exchanges during 2026 as well. Cargodusjet's appearance can therefore also be viewed as a cultural continuation of existing cooperation between the cities rather than simply an individual festival booking.
Children's programme, workshops, gaming and evening projections
The official schedule for the sixth day shows that the programme on 26 August does not stop with a few major names. From the morning, Park kreative in Habdelićeva ulica hosts workshops and children's activities, including Dječja kreativnica, Misterij sadnice, LEGO Akademija and the Španciraj uz MULTI-STEM programme. For MULTI-STEM, the project's official calendar lists two blocks, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00, with activities combining digital technologies, creativity and play. The same day's offering also includes Vindiland, the Techpark Gaming zone, Glazbena klinika, Heroji ulica and a range of smaller programmes spread across different locations in the historic centre.
After 21:00, the official schedule also announces La Luz Visuals at Trg kralja Tomislava, while musical, gastronomic and exhibition activities continue in other zones. This breadth of programming explains why the organiser describes the entire festival edition through hundreds of individual events rather than merely a list of evening concerts. A visitor coming to Varaždin primarily because of a single performer can find completely different content nearby between two scheduled times, which is particularly important for families and guests spending the entire day in the city.
Humana Nova and sustainable fashion are once again part of the festival story
The daily festival announcement also highlights the social cooperative Humana Nova, which produced the festival T-shirts and presents its story at a stand in Kranjčevićeva ulica. In this way, sustainability and textile reuse are incorporated into the festival space beyond the traditional stages. Humana Nova has had a multi-year connection with Špancirfest, and its own website records previous participation and collaborations related to the festival.
Such activities complement Kreativnica, exhibition zones and other parts of the programme where visitors encounter local and regional products, workshops and social initiatives. During the day, Špancirfest therefore relies not only on performance programmes but also on activities that remain open between individual scheduled events, allowing visitors to move through the city centre without every part of their visit needing to be tied to a specific timetable.
Practical information for arriving in central Varaždin
A special traffic regime applies in central Varaždin during Špancirfest. The City of Varaždin announced that from 21 to 30 August closures and traffic restrictions have been introduced at several entrances to the inner centre, including access to certain streets and squares, while additional regulations also apply during concerts by Stari grad. The city has also adjusted the timetable of city buses during the festival. Visitors arriving by car should therefore expect that access to the festival locations themselves in the historic centre is not possible in the same way as under the usual traffic regime.
Since the programme on 26 August stretches from morning workshops to concerts and evening activities after 23:00, planning movement through the city may be more practical than attempting to reach every location by vehicle. Most of the highlighted programmes are located within or immediately next to the historic centre, so Korzo, Franjevački trg, the atriums, Park kreative and the zones around Stari grad are connected by pedestrian movement through the festival area.
