Lollapalooza Chicago in Grant Park: a guide to four festival days
Lollapalooza takes place in Chicago's Grant Park from Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, August 2. The Chicago edition presents a four-day program featuring more than 170 performers across eight stages. The gates open every day at 11:00, the first performances begin around noon, and the program ends by 22:00.
Lollapalooza differs from a traditional festival outside the city because it places the entire event in the very center of a metropolis. On one side of the park is the skyline of the Loop district, on the other is the shore of Lake Michigan, and between them are large pop, rock, and electronic productions, smaller club performances, family programming, and food zones. The festival began in 1991 as a touring farewell tour by Jane's Addiction, and Grant Park has been its permanent home since 2005.
Tickets for this event are in high demand. It is especially important to check which days are included in the purchased category because a two-day package does not mean a free choice after arrival: it is valid for the two days selected at the time of purchase, and the visitor receives two separate wristbands, one for each selected day.
A program combining pop, alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronic music
Lollapalooza's identity continues to be based on the intersection of genres. Major names in contemporary pop share the park with performers from alternative rock, hip-hop, the indie scene, and dance music. For visitors, this means that choosing a day is not merely about selecting the headliner, but also deciding what kind of pace they want from the early afternoon until the closing sets.
Thursday
The festival's opening leads toward two completely different endings to the evening. Lorde performs on the T-Mobile stage from 20:30 to 22:00, while John Summit closes the Bud Light program at the same time. Perry's, the stage traditionally focused on electronic music, concludes with the Worship collective from 20:30 to 21:45. On the smaller stages, the final performances are delivered by Viagra Boys from 21:00 to 22:00 and Snow Strippers from 19:45 to 20:30.
Earlier in the day, highlights include 5 Seconds of Summer from 16:30 to 17:30, Wet Leg from 19:30 to 20:30, Blood Orange from 16:45 to 17:45, Little Simz from 17:45 to 18:30, and Empire of the Sun from 18:30 to 19:30. The very first day demonstrates the festival's main challenge: appealing performances often overlap, so it is more useful to select a few priorities in advance than to try to see everything.
Friday
Friday is sharply divided between contemporary pop and Chicago's rock history. Charli XCX closes the T-Mobile stage from 20:40 to 22:00, while The Smashing Pumpkins perform on the Bud Light stage from 20:30 to 22:00. Major Lazer leads the finale at Perry's from 20:30 to 21:45, while Freddie Gibbs performs on the Airbnb stage from 21:15 to 22:00.
The daytime schedule includes Zara Larsson from 16:40 to 17:40, Lil Uzi Vert from 18:40 to 19:40, YUNGBLUD from 18:30 to 19:30, Mustard from 19:00 to 20:00, Oklou from 17:30 to 18:15, and Suki Waterhouse from 17:40 to 18:40. Visitors who want to combine rap, pop, and rock will have to accept watching several sets only partially or remain on one side of the park.
Saturday
Saturday's finale pits Olivia Dean on the T-Mobile stage from 20:30 to 22:00 against JENNIE on the Bud Light stage from 21:00 to 22:00. Disco Lines performs at Perry's from 20:30 to 21:45, while DJ Trixie Mattel closes the Airbnb stage from 21:00 to 22:00.
Before the main time slots, the program features Clipse from 17:15 to 18:15, The Neighbourhood from 18:30 to 19:30, Alison Wonderland from 19:00 to 20:00, Geese from 19:30 to 20:30, and Ethel Cain from 19:15 to 20:15. Saturday is a good example of the festival's breadth: hip-hop, indie rock, pop, and electronic sets take place almost simultaneously, without a single dominant genre axis.
Sunday
The final day is headlined by Tate McRae on the T-Mobile stage and The xx on the Bud Light stage, with both performances running from 20:45 to 22:00. The Chainsmokers play at Perry's from 20:30 to 21:45, while Ado performs on the Airbnb stage from 21:15 to 22:00.
Earlier in the day, MUNA performs from 16:45 to 17:45, YOASOBI from 17:00 to 18:00, beabadoobee from 18:45 to 19:45, Turnstile from 19:00 to 20:00, and aespa from 19:45 to 20:45. For audiences who want to end the weekend with guitar music, the logical route leads toward Turnstile and The xx, while a pop-oriented schedule runs through MUNA and beabadoobee to Tate McRae.
Performance times may change, so the schedule should be checked again immediately before entering and throughout the day.
How to choose two days
A two-day ticket makes the most sense when the days are selected according to the entire lineup rather than only one headliner. Thursday and Friday offer a strong combination of pop, rock, and electronic music. Saturday and Sunday provide a more pronounced cross-section of international pop, the indie scene, and dance music. The Friday and Saturday combination will suit audiences who want Charli XCX, The Smashing Pumpkins, Olivia Dean, and JENNIE, while Thursday and Sunday bring together Lorde, John Summit, Tate McRae, and The xx.

It is worth securing tickets in good time. In the lead-up to the festival, the two-day and four-day GA categories were sold out, while availability for the remaining single-day and premium options was limited.
Grant Park as part of the festival experience
Grant Park is not a neutral field on the edge of the city. It is located in the Loop, between Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan, in an area known for Buckingham Fountain, gardens, museums, and broad pedestrian routes. During Lollapalooza, this urban park is transformed into a network of stages, rest areas, food and beverage points, and passageways through which a large audience moves throughout the day.
The main closing performances take place at opposite ends of the grounds, so moving between the T-Mobile and Bud Light stages is not something that should be left until the last minute. The ground surface is not the same everywhere: visitors walk across asphalt, grass, and gravel. Comfortable footwear is more important than a festival look that is not suited to walking all day.
The festival has no campsite. It is an urban event reached by public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or by car, and after the program ends, it continues in clubs through aftershow performances. The accompanying program is not a substitute for performances in the park and must be planned separately.
Entrances, wristbands, and re-entry
There are two main points for standard entry. The main entrance is located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive, while the north entrance is at the intersection of Monroe Street and Columbus Drive. The gates open at 11:00. Organized overnight queuing and camping outside the entrances are not permitted.
The wristband should be activated and put on correctly before arrival. It must remain securely on the wrist and must not be removed, stretched, or altered. A two-day package uses two wristbands - each one is linked to one of the selected days. A visitor may leave and re-enter no more than twice during the same day, but the wristband must be scanned when leaving, and the visitor must pass through security again upon every return.
GA provides access to the basic festival grounds. GA+ adds a separate entrance, two lounge areas, seating, air-conditioned restrooms, screens broadcasting the main stages, and water stations. VIP includes designated viewing areas beside the two main stages, lounge areas, and vehicle transport between the northern and southern sections of the premium area. Platinum goes further with closer areas beside several stages, all-day food and drinks, and additional services. All viewing areas have limited capacity, so a higher category does not mean that visitors can arrive at the most popular performance at the last moment.
What can be brought inside
Bag checks are carried out at every entry and re-entry. A small handbag or waist bag measuring up to 6 x 9 inches does not have to be transparent, but it may have no more than one compartment. Larger bags must be transparent and smaller than 12 x 6 x 12 inches. Hydration packs do not have to be transparent, but they must be empty upon entry and have no more than two main compartments and one smaller compartment.
- Empty reusable water bottles, portable batteries, binoculars, strollers, and small consumer cameras without interchangeable lenses are permitted.
- Sunscreen must be in a non-aerosol container of up to 3.4 ounces, and a personal mister must be empty upon entry.
- Outside food and drinks, glass, coolers, umbrellas, chairs, blankets, professional equipment, selfie sticks, drones, pets other than service animals, and any kind of weapon are not permitted.
- Smoking and vaping are not permitted in Chicago parks.
The rules may change, and security staff at the entrance make the final decision regarding any item that is not clearly listed. Visitors without a bag usually pass through most quickly.
Arriving by public transport, bicycle, or car
Chicago is served by O'Hare and Midway airports. City and regional services are available for onward travel toward the city center, while CTA, Metra, and Pace provide access to Grant Park. Public transport is especially practical after the closing performances, when tens of thousands of people leave the park at the same time and temporary street closures alter the usual driving routes.
A free guarded bicycle parking area has been announced at the intersection of Balbo Drive and Michigan Avenue, along with additional racks for self-locking. Visitors arriving by car can use garages beneath Grant Park, Millennium Park, and Maggie Daley Park, but they should check access in advance because of closures affecting parts of Columbus Drive, Monroe Street, Balbo Drive, and surrounding streets. Vehicle pick-up and drop-off zones are also restricted during festival hours.
- Arrive early if you want to see the first performance or collect your wristband.
- Save the festival map on your phone before entering.
- Arrange a meeting point with your group in case the mobile signal is weak.
- Do not plan to drive directly beside the park as the fastest way to leave.
Food, rest, and activities between performances
Chow Town is the main food area, alongside Dessert Island, Plant Base, and Vibe Village. The selection is strongly connected to Chicago and includes restaurants such as Billy Goat Tavern, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Harold's Chicken, Dark Matter Coffee, Original Rainbow Cone, and Penelope's Vegan Taqueria. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available, but individual locations and menus depend on the zone.
Kidzapalooza offers a family program with performances and activities for children. Toyota Music Den functions as a smaller music venue within the festival, while additional activation zones offer phone charging, photography, workshops, and shorter DJ programs. Lockers for belongings and portable chargers are available, subject to limited capacity.
First-time visitors benefit most from a pace that leaves room for breaks. Ten or more hours in the park is not merely a sequence of concerts: it includes waiting at the entrance, walking between stages, queues for food, refilling water, and finding a place before the main performances. The best schedule therefore contains several fixed points and enough empty space to change plans.
Places disappear quickly. Before departure, visitors should check the selected days on their wristbands, the current schedule, the entrance location, and the bag rules once again, because these are the details where time is most often lost that would be better spent in front of a stage.
