See Lorde live in concert on Gurtenfestival's main stage in Bern on 16 July 2026. Expect songs from "Virgin", defining moments from "Melodrama" and "Pure Heroine", and a late-night open-air atmosphere above the city. Plan your ticket purchase and arrival on Gurten in good time

Lorde at Gurtenfestival: a night of introspective pop above Bern

Lorde is coming to Gurtenfestival at a time when her career is once again gaining strong momentum. Following the album "Virgin" and the "Ultrasound" tour, the New Zealand songwriter is bringing a combination of stripped-down confessions, electronic pop and songs that defined the coming of age of an entire generation of listeners to festival stages. The late-night outdoor slot is particularly well suited to music that moves from silence and unease to grand communal choruses.

For visitors with a two-day ticket, the distinction between the beginning of its validity and the performance time is important. The ticket for Wednesday and Thursday is valid from 15 July, but Lorde performs on Thursday, 16 July, at 23:45 on the HauptbĂŒhne, the festival's main stage. On Wednesday, the grounds open at 14:00, and on Thursday at 12:00. Tickets for this event are in demand.

The current chapter following the album "Virgin"

Lorde achieved global recognition with the song "Royals", whose minimalist rhythm and ironic view of pop luxury changed expectations of a teenage pop star. Her debut, "Pure Heroine", built a world of suburbs, nighttime drives and friendships, while "Melodrama" expanded that language to the dance floor, breakups and the emotional disorder of the early twenties. "Solar Power" then slowed the tempo and turned towards softer production.

"Virgin", the fourth studio album released in 2025, once again emphasises electronics, physicality and direct writing. Songs such as "What Was That", "Man of the Year", "Hammer", "Shapeshifter" and "Current Affairs" deal with the body, identity, fame, relationships and her own past. The production leaves enough room for the voice, bass and rhythm, allowing the new material to sound both fragile and powerful live.

The "Ultrasound" tour began in September 2025 and continued throughout 2026 in arenas and at festivals. Gurten is part of a dense European summer run: immediately before Bern, Lorde performs in France, and then continues towards Ostrava and Berlin. This is a concert from the current phase of her career, not a comeback relying solely on old hits.

What the audience can expect from the repertoire

The exact set list for Gurtenfestival has not been announced in advance. Nevertheless, recent festival performances provide a reasonable framework. At the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid in early July, Lorde combined songs from the album "Virgin" with titles from earlier periods, including "Royals", "Buzzcut Season", "The Louvre", "Liability", "Supercut", "Team", "Green Light" and "Ribs". She also performed the newer songs "What Was That", "Broken Glass", "Favourite Daughter", "Current Affairs", "Hammer", "Man of the Year" and "David".

This is not a guarantee of the same selection in Bern. Festival sets are shorter and more variable than standalone arena shows, and the programme may be adapted to timing and production requirements. Performances so far nevertheless show that "Ultrasound" does not neglect the past. The new album forms the core of the story, while the major choruses from "Pure Heroine" and "Melodrama" remain an important part of the shared experience.

For long-time fans, it is interesting to see how the songs change meaning. "Royals" now sounds like the starting point of a career, "Liability" like a quiet shared confession, and "Green Light" and "Supercut" like spaces for collective singing. The newer material brings more bodily rhythm, rougher textures and fewer embellishments.

Recognisable features of the live performance

  • sudden shifts between quiet sections and large pop choruses
  • a strongly physical performance, dancing and movement beyond conventional choreography
  • plenty of space for the voice and words even when the production becomes intensely electronic
  • contact with the audience that attempts to turn large venues into a personal stage
  • a repertoire connecting "Virgin" with the eras of "Pure Heroine" and "Melodrama"

Reviews of the tour highlight the deliberately stripped-down stage, movement, camera work and carefully used props, but it has not been confirmed that every element of the arena production will be transferred to the festival performance. It is more realistic to expect the same principle: less reliance on decoration and more on the body, voice, light and relationship with the audience.

The main stage in a late-night slot

Lorde takes the HauptbĂŒhne at 23:45, following a full day of programming and Lily Allen's concert at 20:45 on the same stage. That time slot suits songs about nighttime cities, breakups, memory and the acceleration of time, especially once the daytime heat subsides and the grounds remain illuminated by the stage.

Gurtenfestival 2026 can accommodate up to 27,000 visitors per day, so the physical intimacy of a small club should not be expected. Proximity to the performer will depend on arrival time and crowd density. Those who value the view more should take their position earlier, while the side and rear areas offer more room for dancing and an easier exit.

The HauptbĂŒhne opens onto a large grassy area. Additional sound and visual structures help visitors follow the performance from more distant sections, but the sound experience still changes depending on position, wind and crowd density. The most balanced sound is usually found closer to the central axis, outside the most tightly packed part of the crowd.

It is worth securing tickets in good time.

Two-day ticket: how to plan Wednesday and Thursday

A two-day ticket allows Lorde's performance to be more than an isolated arrival near the end of the second evening. Wednesday on the main stage features Say She She at 17:00, Sean Paul at 19:45 and Teddy Swims at 22:30. On Thursday, Lily Allen performs on the HauptbĂŒhne at 20:45, Young Miko on the ZeltbĂŒhne at 19:00, and Loyle Carner on the same stage at 22:15.

The schedule requires realistic planning. Travelling between areas, queues for food and water, and visits to sanitary facilities take time, and Gurten is not a flat urban space. Trying to watch the entire end of Loyle Carner's performance and then secure a good position for Lorde may be exhausting. It is better to determine priorities in advance than to spend the evening constantly moving around.

Because of the heat, adjustments have been introduced to earlier times and locations, and some of the first main-stage concerts from Thursday onwards are being moved to the shaded ZeltbĂŒhne. Lorde's slot is currently still listed on the HauptbĂŒhne at 23:45. The schedule should be checked again before arrival, as further changes related to extreme temperatures are possible.

Gurten as a concert location

Gurten is a hill above Bern, with its highest point at 858 metres above sea level. The festival takes place in a green, open space, and arrival involves taking a tram or train to Wabern, using the Gurtenbahn or walking uphill, exchanging the ticket for a wristband and passing through a security check.

The day can be very hot, while after midnight the temperature on the hill may drop noticeably. Daily highs of around 32 degrees are forecast for 15 and 16 July, together with an extreme heat warning. The organiser has installed additional shaded areas, water misting systems and around 160 free drinking-water points. An additional empty PET bottle of up to 1.5 litres is also permitted, alongside the usual rule allowing one bottle of up to 0.5 litres per person per day.

A light jacket, sun protection and comfortable footwear make more sense than an overfilled backpack. In such conditions, visitors should drink water before arriving, rest regularly and leave enough time for the ascent.

Practical entry rules

  • the grounds open at 14:00 on Wednesday and at 12:00 on Thursday
  • tickets can be exchanged for wristbands from 11:00; the wristband is placed directly on the wrist
  • luggage must not exceed 20 litres
  • small cameras, light meals and umbrellas or parasols with a diameter of up to one metre are permitted
  • glass bottles, cans, drones, large tripods, cameras with interchangeable lenses and loudspeakers are not permitted
  • the festival operates without cash
  • hearing protection is available at several locations, and sound levels may reach 100 dB(A)

How to get there from Bern and return after the concert

The easiest starting point for most travellers is Bern Hauptbahnhof. Tram line 9 runs towards Wabern and operates with increased frequency during the festival. Wabern can also be reached using the S3 and S31 lines. From the foot of the hill, the Gurtenbahn leads towards the main entrance, and the journey is included in the festival ticket. The ticket or wristband is also valid for the return journey within Libero zones 100 and 101 during the day of validity.

With a two-day ticket, local public transport is included on Wednesday and Thursday within the stated zones. The final descent on the Gurtenbahn is scheduled for around 5:30, and additional buses operate during the night between the Gurtenbahn station and the main railway station. Extended nighttime services have been announced for both nights.

The walk uphill from Wabern takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes, while the less steep route from the direction of Spiegel/Blinzern takes around 35 to 45 minutes. At temperatures above 30 degrees, rushing should be avoided. Arriving by car is possible as far as a special car park in Wabern, from which a shuttle operates, but spaces are limited and there is no public parking next to the Gurtenbahn.

Who will find this concert particularly appealing

The concert will offer the most to audiences who look for lyrics, atmosphere and an emotional arc in pop music. Long-time fans will hear how songs from Lorde's teenage period have changed meaning after more than a decade. Listeners who discovered Lorde through "Melodrama" can expect moments of large-scale communal singing, while the current "Virgin" era attracts audiences drawn to art pop, electronic textures and themes of identity.

The wider festival audience will not be left without familiar reference points. "Royals", "Team" and "Green Light" are recognised even by people who do not follow every album. Nevertheless, the performance will work best for those who embrace the contrast between euphoria and unease. Lorde does not build a concert solely towards the biggest chorus, but also towards the moment when a large crowd briefly falls silent.

A recent performance in Madrid was described as a more intimate and reflective part of a major pop programme. This does not mean that Gurten will receive an identical performance, but it indicates the direction of the current festival version of the tour.

Ticket sales for this event are under way.

Final check before departure

On the day of arrival, visitors should check the schedule, heat information and access conditions for the Gurtenbahn once again. The two-day ticket should be exchanged for a wristband on the first day of validity, and an identification document should be kept alongside the QR code. The wristband is non-transferable, and each person must collect their own.

Thursday will be a long day: the grounds open at noon, Lorde performs at 23:45, and the return to Bern may take place deep into the night. The most useful items are a small bag, water, sun protection, comfortable footwear, a light layer for the night, hearing protection and a prearranged meeting place with friends. In a large venue, mobile coverage and spontaneous arrangements are not always reliable when the crowd becomes denser before the main performance.
