Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park: two days of music, food and urban character
Outside Lands is not a festival that can be reduced to merely a series of concerts. Its identity stems from the combination of major stages, San Francisco's culinary scene, contemporary art and the open space of Golden Gate Park. The 2026 edition takes place from August 7 to 9, while the ticket in this offer covers two days - Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9. The gates open at 11:00, the music program begins at noon and ends by 22:00.
The festival was first held in 2008, when Radiohead headlined the opening night and became the first act to perform after dark in Golden Gate Park. Since then, Outside Lands has drawn on the character of San Francisco: the stages bear the names of city locations, while additional areas connect music with gastronomy, art and nightlife.
For visitors attending only on Saturday and Sunday, the program offers two very different endings to the day. The Strokes headline Saturday, while Sunday's main slot belongs to Rüfüs Du Sol. Tickets for this event are in high demand.
What sets Outside Lands apart from other festivals
Golden Gate Park is not a flat festival meadow with several stages placed next to one another. The program is spread across the western part of the large city park, among grassy meadows, eucalyptus trees and wooded passages. As a result, moving between performances becomes part of the experience, but also an important logistical decision. Lands End, Twin Peaks, Sutro, Panhandle and SOMA have different atmospheres, while the program is supplemented by Dolores', Duboce Triangle and Cocktail Magic.
The festival particularly stands out because food and drink are not merely supporting content between concerts. Taste of the Bay Area brings together more than 100 restaurants and other food vendors from the wider San Francisco area. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. Wine Lands presents Californian wineries, Beer Lands showcases the local craft beer scene, and Cocktail Magic combines cocktails, performances and an illusionist program.
Additional attractions include Artists in Residence, a project in which artists from the Bay Area create murals, installations and works adapted to the park environment, as well as Outsider Art, the McLaren Vintage fashion area and Dolores', a stage focused on queer and trans communities, DIY culture and San Francisco nightlife. Grass Lands returns as a curated area dedicated to cannabis, with age restrictions and special access rules.
First-time visitors will benefit most from preparing a schedule in advance with one or two priority performances in each part of the day, rather than trying to see everything.
Saturday: The Strokes, The xx and a series of difficult choices
Saturday, August 8, brings one of the weekend's most striking scheduling clashes. The Strokes perform on the Lands End stage from 20:35 to 21:55, while The xx play at Twin Peaks from 20:10 to 21:25. The overlap is too significant for both concerts to be watched in full, and the journey between the two stages further reduces the time available for music. Visitors who prioritize one of these two acts should position themselves early and should not count on making a quick transition through the evening crowds.
The Strokes remain one of the defining names of 21st-century New York rock. The xx offer a different kind of performance - a more restrained combination of indie pop, electronic music and the distinctive dynamics of Romy, Oliver Sim and Jamie xx.
Saturday's program extends far beyond the main clash. Highlights include PinkPantheress, Djo, Dijon, Ethel Cain, Lucy Dacus, Audrey Hobert, Malcolm Todd, Yard Act, Wunderhorse and Snow Strippers. Electronic music fans can choose between Lane 8, Sultan + Shepard, DJ Trixie Mattel and other performers in the SOMA program.
The best way to plan Saturday is to divide the day into three parts:
- Early program - time for the smaller stages, food and becoming familiar with the park layout.
- Late afternoon - a choice between artists such as Djo, Lucy Dacus and Malcolm Todd, and performers from the electronic program.
- Evening - a clear decision between The Strokes, The xx, PinkPantheress and Lane 8, without relying on an improvised last-minute transition.
It is worth securing tickets in good time, particularly because the standard three-day and single-day GA, GA+ and VIP categories have already reached sold-out status, with waiting lists for part of the offer.
Sunday: Rüfüs Du Sol, Baby Keem and a multi-genre finale
Sunday's program is closed by Rüfüs Du Sol, an Australian trio known for combining electronic production, melodic vocals and a concert performance built around a full-band format. Their slot suits an audience that wants to end the weekend with a large, rhythmic outdoor performance, but the final evening does not offer an easy choice either.
Performers with very different profiles appear in the closing slots. Baby Keem represents contemporary hip-hop, Death Cab for Cutie American indie rock, and Boris Brejcha the electronic program. Empire of the Sun, Mariah the Scientist, Jade, Momma, Boys Noize and Disco Lines further broaden Sunday's range.
Death Cab for Cutie appear in the program with two performances, giving visitors an alternative to the evening slot. This is a good example of why it is worth studying the entire daily schedule rather than only the closing acts. An earlier performance can create room for another choice in the evening and reduce the need to run between distant areas.
For a two-day ticket, Saturday and Sunday together provide an overview of almost the entire identity of the festival: the New York rock of The Strokes, the more intimate indie approach of The xx, the contemporary pop of PinkPantheress, the singer-songwriter music of Lucy Dacus and Ethel Cain, the hip-hop of Baby Keem and the electronic extremes ranging from Rüfüs Du Sol to Boris Brejcha.
Tickets and differences between festival areas
A basic GA ticket provides access to the general festival grounds, stages, food and beverage areas and additional attractions. GA+ adds expedited entry and a separate lounge with better restrooms, non-alcoholic drinks and a bar, as well as food available for an additional charge.
VIP includes dedicated entrances on the northern and southern sides of the park, separate viewing areas at the Lands End, Sutro and Twin Peaks stages, dedicated bars, a lounge near Lands End, upgraded restrooms and access to a separate festival merchandise shop. Capacity in the VIP area at Sutro may be limited, so a VIP wristband does not automatically mean unlimited access to every area at all times.
Golden Gate Club adds areas near the three main stages, golf-cart transportation between areas, all-day food and drinks and an elevated lounge beside Lands End. SOMA Social Club is intended for groups and is connected to a raised area beside the SOMA stage.
It is important to distinguish the ticket category from the ticket duration. The festival lasts three days, and single-day and three-day categories were sold separately. The ticket listed with this event is valid for two days, from Saturday, August 8, to Sunday, August 9, so it does not include Friday or the Charli xcx performance.
Wristbands, entrances and re-entry rules
The wristband is the ticket and must remain on the wrist throughout all the days for which it is valid. It should not be cut, twisted or removed, as a damaged or altered wristband may be invalidated. The general rule does not allow guests to leave and re-enter on the same day. In an emergency, visitors must speak to a supervisor at the entrance or exit before leaving and must be recorded upon exit.
The main entrances are located on two sides of the park:
- North Gate - access from the northern side near 26th Avenue and Fulton Street.
- South Gate - access from the southern side near Martin Luther King Jr Drive and Metson Road.
- ADA entrance - near 36th Avenue and JFK Drive.
- VIP and Golden Gate Club - dedicated access near 36th Avenue and JFK Drive, with an additional southern VIP option for shuttle users.
The festival box office is located in Marx Meadow near 25th Avenue and Fulton Street. On Saturday, August 8, it is open from 10:00 to 21:00, and on Sunday, August 9, from 10:00 to 20:00. Visitors collecting their wristbands there should allow additional time before entering.
What may be brought into the park
The simplest option is to arrive without a bag. Clear bags and backpacks made of plastic, vinyl or PVC are permitted, as are small non-transparent purses, belt bags and bags measuring up to 6 x 8 x 3 inches. Empty purpose-built hydration reservoirs with a bladder smaller than 2.5 liters and no more than one additional pocket are permitted. Standard backpacks with a built-in water reservoir are not allowed.
Prohibited items include, among other things, weapons and pocket knives, outside alcohol, glass and cans, professional video equipment, GoPro cameras, drones, selfie sticks, umbrellas, chairs with legs, coolers, tents, bicycles inside the grounds and pets other than service animals.
Liquids generally cannot be brought inside, but free water-refill stations are located throughout the grounds. It therefore makes sense to bring a permitted empty reusable bottle or a suitable hydration reservoir. Lockers are also available for GA, GA+ and VIP visitors.
How to reach Golden Gate Park
Driving to the festival area itself is not a practical choice. General parking near the entrance is not provided, and road closures affect parts of the park and the surrounding approaches. For drop-off and pick-up, locations several blocks to the north or south are recommended, for example toward Geary Boulevard, Balboa Street or Irving Street.
For public transportation, combinations of BART and city transit lines are the most useful. Passengers arriving by BART can get off at Montgomery Street and continue on the 5R Fulton Rapid, 5 Fulton, 38R Geary Rapid or 38 Geary lines. Additional service on N Judah and 5R Fulton Rapid is planned during the festival weekend, while after the program ends, the 5X Fulton Express connects the area near Fulton Street with the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART station.
A prepaid shuttle departs from Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, near Civic Center Plaza and connections to the BART and Muni networks. It operates from 11:00, with reduced frequency between 17:00 and 20:00, and the last departure toward the festival is at 20:00. Return journeys continue until one hour after the music ends and use the southern side of the festival grounds.
A bicycle may be a good option for some visitors, but it cannot be taken inside the fenced grounds. When planning the return journey, visitors should expect crowds after 22:00 and choose the exit leading toward their selected transportation in advance.
A practical pace for a first visit
Arriving shortly after opening provides enough time for the security inspection and orientation without the evening crowds. The park is spacious, the terrain is not flat everywhere, and transitions between stages take longer than they appear on the map. Comfortable footwear and layered clothing are important for walking throughout the day.
The festival app contains a map and schedule and allows users to create a personal program. It is advisable to mark the main performance of the day, one backup option and a meeting point for the group in case the mobile network becomes overloaded. It is more practical to get food before the largest evening performances, when queues and pedestrian traffic around the main areas increase.
Outside Lands works best when it is not treated as a race through a list of performers. Two days allow visitors to dedicate part of their time to the major stages and another part to smaller spaces, food, artworks and the areas that connect the festival with San Francisco. Places disappear quickly, so it is worth arranging the entry, transportation and evening-priority plan before arrival.
