On April 12, 2025, Samobor once again became the epicenter of the Croatian gastronomic scene, hosting the 37th edition of the Samobor Salamijada – an event that has been celebrating tradition, family recipes, and the art of making cured meat delicacies for decades.
Gastronomic heritage in the spotlight
This year, the Salamijada gathered almost 190 salami samples from all over Croatia and neighboring countries, confirming Samobor's status as a center for the preservation of traditional meat products. The expert jury, composed of experienced technologists and master butchers, had the demanding task of evaluating the quality, texture, taste, and aroma of each sample.
President Milanović among the guests
The event was graced by the presence of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, who was also the patron of the event. He was accompanied by his special advisor for economy, Velibor Mačkić, and the Minister of Environmental Protection and Energy, Marija Vučković. Their presence further emphasized the importance of the Salamijada as an event of national significance.
Family recipes and innovations
Special attention was drawn to Iva Liović from Dubravica, whose salami won the prestigious Great Golden Slice award. Her product is the result of collaboration with her uncle, combining family butchery heritage and modern food technology knowledge. The salami is made exclusively from first-category meat and local spices, according to a recipe passed down through generations.
The Golden Slice Association – guardian of tradition
The organization of the Salamijada is led by the Golden Slice Association, headed by Dubravko Viduč, who is also the President of the Organizing Committee. The Mayor of Samobor, Petra Škrobot, highlighted the importance of the event for the local community, emphasizing its contribution to preserving tradition and promoting the city as a gastronomic destination.
Samobor – a blend of tradition and tourism
Samobor, located near Zagreb, is known for its rich cultural and gastronomic offer. Visitors can enjoy walks through the old town streets, visit museums and galleries, and taste local specialties such as Samobor kremšnita and češnofka. The city offers a variety of accommodation, from family B&Bs to modern hotels, providing a comfortable stay for all guests.
Salamijada – more than a competition
The Samobor Salamijada is not just a competition for making the best salami, but also a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and promoting local producers. The event brings together enthusiasts, experts, and visitors from different regions, creating a unique atmosphere of community and love for tradition.
Preservation of cultural heritage
Over the years, the Salamijada has become a symbol of preserving cultural heritage and an incentive for younger generations to continue the tradition of their ancestors. Initiatives like this play a crucial role in maintaining identity and promoting the values that shape society.
Plans for the future
The organizers are already planning the next edition of the Salamijada, aiming to further improve the event and involve an even larger number of participants. The focus will be on education, innovation, and strengthening international cooperation, so that the Samobor Salamijada remains the leading event in the region.
