Arsenal checks the conditions for Manu Koné's transfer: Roma between sporting plan and financial pressure

Arsenal are monitoring the situation around Manu Koné, the French Roma midfielder who, after two seasons in Serie A, has become one of the more important players at the Roman club. According to information published on June 12, 2026 by media outlets that follow the football transfer market, the London club has already established initial contacts with the player's entourage to check under what conditions a transfer could open up during the summer transfer window. According to the available information, a formal offer has not yet been sent, and the entire case for now remains in the stage of testing the ground.

Arsenal's interest does not come outside the context of a broader search for a midfielder who can cover several roles in the middle of the pitch. According to descriptions of his profile in Italian and French reports, Koné fits into such a model because of his physical strength, play under pressure, ability to carry the ball forward and possibility of playing as a more defensive midfielder or as a dynamic number eight. It is precisely that combination that explains why his name has ended up on the list of clubs from the top of European football, but also why Roma would not easily open the door to a departure unless financially forced to do so.

Initial contacts without an official offer

According to a Sport Witness report, Arsenal are one of the clubs that stand out in particular among those interested in Koné, and the same source states that Atlético Madrid and Inter are also in the race. The text emphasizes that contacts are still at an early stage and that the logistics of negotiations could be more complex because the player is in the French national-team environment. French sources quoted by international sports portals are conveying a similar direction, noting that Roma have not yet received an official offer that would trigger club negotiations.

Such a stage of the process is common in modern transfers. Clubs often first check the player's stance, salary framework, intermediary commissions and the parent club's willingness to talk before sending a written offer. In this case it is especially important that Koné has a contract which, according to Transfermarkt data, runs until June 30, 2029, so Roma have no sporting reason for a rushed sale at a reduced price. A long contract gives the club negotiating strength, but the financial framework in which Roma find themselves can change the balance.

Why Roma are in a sensitive position

The central question is not only whether Roma want to sell one of their key players, but how much room for maneuver UEFA's financial monitoring leaves them. According to the official summary of UEFA's settlement agreement, the monitoring regime for the club includes reporting periods ending from 2022 to 2026 and extends through the seasons from 2022/23 to 2026/27. In the same document, UEFA states that the club must meet requirements related to the football earnings rule, with regular monitoring and an obligation to submit financial reports.

That framework does not automatically mean that Roma must sell Koné, but it explains why his name appears in the context of possible outgoing transfers. Italian media, cited in May by Get Italian Football News, wrote that the club might have to generate significant capital gains by the end of June in order to reduce the risk of sanctions or new restrictions. In such circumstances, the most valuable players often become objects of interest because selling a footballer brought in for a lower amount can quickly improve the club's accounting picture.

Roma, however, must weigh the financial benefit against the sporting loss. Koné is not a player with a marginal role, but a midfielder who has been given important space in Gasperini's system between building attacks and protecting the back line. If the club decided to accept an offer, it would have to find a replacement who can bring a similar level of intensity, duel play and vertical ball carrying. That is especially difficult at a moment when the market for midfielders with such a profile is heating up further.

Gasperini's message: nobody is completely untouchable

Additional weight was given to the story by a statement from coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who spoke about Koné's future at the beginning of May. According to Get Italian Football News, Gasperini said at a press conference that modern football almost no longer has completely unsellable players, except perhaps at the very top of world clubs. At the same time, he stressed that exceptional offers appear rarely, thereby sending a message that Roma do not plan to easily give up on a player who is important to them.

Such an answer can be read in two ways. From a sporting perspective, the coach clearly makes it known that Koné has value in his plan and that a sale would be a loss for the team. Financially, the statement leaves the club room to consider an offer that would be high enough to compensate for the sporting risk. In practice, that means negotiations, if they take place, will probably be neither short nor simple.

During the season, Gasperini used the midfield as one of the key mechanisms for pressing, transition and quick exits from dangerous zones. In such a model, Koné is not only a player who wins duels, but also someone who can carry the ball through the middle without an additional pass toward the flank. Because of that, his value is not seen only in goals and assists, but in the way the team gains meters and stability when the opponent presses high.

The profile that explains Arsenal's interest

Manu Koné was born on May 17, 2001 in Colombes, and the French Football Federation lists him in its official profile as an AS Roma midfielder and senior France international. The same federation records that he made his senior national-team debut on September 6, 2024 against Italy, while by June 2026 he had registered 14 appearances for France. Such international experience further raises his market credibility, especially because he is a player still at an age at which further development is expected.

According to FotMob data for the 2025/26 Serie A season, Koné accumulated 2459 minutes, scored two goals and added three assists. Those numbers by themselves do not fully describe his role, but they show that he was a regular and important part of the team. His game is reflected more in pressing, duels, ball progression and opening space than in the finishing phase of attacks. That is why he is interesting to clubs that want to increase the physical and tactical resilience of the middle of the pitch.

Arsenal's interest fits logically into such a profile. Mikel Arteta's team have for years been looking for midfielders who can maintain a high tempo, participate in pressing and at the same time be secure enough on the ball not to disrupt the attacking structure. Within that framework, Koné could be used as a player who eases the burden on the team's main creators, takes over part of the defensive work and enables more flexible rotations between the positions of number six and number eight. According to reports following Arsenal, the London club are for now checking the feasibility of the deal, rather than entering the final phase of negotiations.

Roma have a price, Arsenal are looking for the right moment

Transfermarkt currently estimates Koné's market value at 50 million euros, but such estimates are not the same as a selling price. In real negotiations, the key factors are contract length, club needs, interest from other buyers and deadline pressure. If Roma have to generate revenue before the end of the accounting period, potential buyers could try to use that time pressure. If, however, the club manages to delay or soften its financial obligations, Roma's negotiating position would be significantly firmer.

Sport Witness states that Roma are considering the possibility of renegotiating parts of the settlement agreement with UEFA, but the same source warns that there is no guarantee such an attempt will succeed. That is an important distinction because a possible extension of the deadline could reduce the need for an urgent sale. Without such room, the club could find itself in a situation in which the sporting plan and financial discipline move in opposite directions. In that gap, an opportunity arises for clubs like Arsenal.

For Arsenal, the deal would make sense only if the price fits into the wider transfer-window plan. A player who can operate in several roles has additional value, but the London club must take into account competition, priorities in other lines and the overall wage structure. At this stage, it is therefore not unusual that the club is remaining at the level of contacts and information gathering. A formal offer usually comes only when the buyer assesses that there is a real possibility of an agreement with the player and the club.

Competition can speed up the decision

Reports mention other European clubs alongside Arsenal, primarily Inter and Atlético Madrid, while Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United have also previously appeared in the context of Koné's future. Inter's presence is particularly interesting because they know the Italian market well and can assess Roma's financial conditions more quickly. Atlético, on the other hand, could be an attractive option for a player who wants a system with a strong emphasis on work without the ball and intensity in midfield.

Broader competition can raise the price, but it can also speed up the decision of the player's entourage. If Koné receives several concrete options, his choice will not depend only on money but also on his role in the team, the club's European status, the coach's plan and guarantees of playing time. Arsenal have arguments here in an ambitious sporting project, but Roma have the advantage of the existing contract and the fact that the player is already important in the system. Because of that, the stance of the player himself will be important, but not decisive without an agreement between the clubs.

Key deadlines arrive before the end of June

The most important period for this story could be until the end of June, when financial accounts relevant to club balance sheets are often closed in European football. According to UEFA's document, Roma are under monitoring in a broader period that includes reporting years up to 2026, and media reports from Italy therefore emphasize pressure on capital gains. If the club assesses that without a sale it cannot meet its targets or reduce the risk of sanctions, Koné could become one of the most valuable options on the outgoing market.

At the same time, it has not been officially confirmed that Roma have made a decision to sell. The available information shows that the sporting side of the club wants to keep him, while the financial context opens the possibility of talks. Arsenal are therefore for now monitoring developments and testing the conditions, but a decision on a possible offer will depend on whether Roma truly open the door to negotiations. Until then, Koné's future is one of the more important open questions on the midfielders' market, with clear sporting and financial reasons on both sides.
