Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea and continued their perfect start to the title defence
Arsenal showed in the first major London derby of the new Premier League season why they entered the competition as the reigning champions. Mikel Arteta's side defeated Chelsea 2:1 at the Emirates Stadium on 6 September 2026, despite falling behind after just 77 seconds. Morgan Rogers put the visitors ahead, but Kai Havertz equalised in the 25th minute, while captain Martin Ødegaard completed the comeback five minutes after the start of the second half. Arsenal therefore maintained a perfect record of nine points after the opening three rounds and remained level with Manchester City at the top of the table, while Chelsea suffered their first defeat after two opening league victories and stayed on six points. The result carried additional significance because it was one of the first direct tests of the balance of power between clubs already being mentioned at the start of the season as contenders for the very top.
Chelsea took the lead after only 77 seconds
The match began almost ideally for Chelsea. According to the London club's official report, the move for the opening goal developed after a Reece James free kick, which he sent deep into Arsenal's penalty area. Maxence Lacroix won the aerial duel, Jorrel Hato then kept the ball in a dangerous area with a header, and it dropped towards Rogers on the edge of the box. The England international reacted first time and beat David Raya with a low shot, silencing a large part of the Emirates as early as the second minute. Opta states that the goal was scored after only 77 seconds and that it was the earliest league goal Arsenal had conceded since August 2023, when Andreas Pereira scored for Fulham after 57 seconds. At the same time, Chelsea's unusual run of fast starts continued: according to Opta, Xabi Alonso's team became the first in Premier League history to score within the opening five minutes in each of their first three matches of a season.
The early goal, however, did not disrupt Arsenal as much as Chelsea might have expected. The hosts raised the tempo almost immediately, began competing more aggressively for second balls and increasingly pushed the visitors towards their own penalty area. As early as the 12th minute, it appeared the equaliser had arrived after a scramble caused by a Declan Rice set piece. Emiliano Martínez intervened first, Gabriel's attempt hit the post, and Riccardo Calafiori put the rebound into the net, but the VAR check showed that Ezri Konsa had been offside earlier in the move. The goal was disallowed, but the course of the match was already clearly showing that Arsenal would not accept the role of a team merely waiting patiently for an opponent's mistake. The champions' pressure became increasingly intense, while Chelsea found it more and more difficult to escape their own half without taking risks.
Havertz punished his former club and brought Arsenal back into the match
The equaliser arrived in the 25th minute, and the scorer was former Chelsea player Kai Havertz. According to reports from Sky Sports and Chelsea, the German forward received the ball on the right side, moved towards the centre, created space for a left-footed shot and found the net inside Emiliano Martínez's near post. It was the moment in which Arsenal finally converted their sustained pressure and reset the match. Opta states that it was Havertz's third Premier League goal against Chelsea since leaving Stamford Bridge, with only Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, five each, scoring more league goals against Chelsea after leaving the London club among former Chelsea players. Havertz's contribution, however, did not end with the goal, because it would later be precisely his decision not to touch the ball that opened the space for the winning goal.
Despite Arsenal's initiative, Chelsea had two major chances to regain the lead before half-time. Rogers shot narrowly wide in the 31st minute, while Pedro Neto hit the post in first-half stoppage time after a quick transition. Those moments showed that the visiting team remained extremely dangerous whenever they managed to bypass Arsenal's first wave of pressure. On the other hand, the hosts constantly forced Chelsea to defend deep around their own penalty area by committing a large number of players to the final third. The match statistics also illustrate that balance of power: according to data published by the Guardian, Arsenal had 55 percent possession and nine shots on target, while Chelsea had five shots on target. Despite the open tempo and the large number of dangerous situations, the teams went into the break with the score at 1:1.
Ødegaard completed the comeback after an excellent Havertz move
The key moment of the match came in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis sent a low ball towards the centre of the penalty area, Havertz recognised Ødegaard's run and allowed the pass to continue without touching it, while the Norwegian midfielder was left with enough space to beat Martínez with a powerful shot. According to Opta, the assist was officially credited to Tzolis, but Havertz's dummy was decisive because it put part of Chelsea's defence off balance. Ødegaard therefore reached his third goal in four appearances in all competitions this season, after scoring only one goal in 36 appearances throughout the whole of last season. For Arsenal, it was also proof that in the most important matches they do not have to rely solely on set pieces and defensive stability, but can decide games through quick combinations in central areas and half-space zones.
After taking the lead, Arsenal had chances to increase their advantage. Martínez tipped Bukayo Saka's attempt away with his fingertips in the 69th minute, and a few minutes later he also saved Ezri Konsa's header following a corner. Chelsea gradually introduced fresher players and took more risks in the closing stages, with Malo Gusto, Pep Chavarria, Estêvão Willian and Danny Welbeck coming off the bench. According to Chelsea's official report, the visitors managed to push Arsenal deeper towards their own goal during the final fifteen minutes or so, but they could not find the finishing touch. They came closest to an equaliser in the 89th minute when Estêvão sent a dangerous effort towards the top corner, but Raya produced an excellent intervention to tip the ball over the crossbar. That save practically preserved all three points and completed Arsenal's comeback.
Arteta pleased with the reaction, Alonso demands better defensive balance
Mikel Arteta did not hide his satisfaction after the match with the way his team reacted to Chelsea's exceptionally early goal. Speaking to Sky Sports, he described the performance as exceptional and stressed that the team still has room to play even better than during the championship-winning 2025/26 season. He particularly highlighted the response after the opening setback, namely the belief and determination with which Arsenal continued to play instead of becoming more cautious. Such a response was also important because of the statistical context: Opta states that before this match Arsenal had failed to win any of their previous 14 league meetings with Chelsea in which they conceded first, recording four draws and ten defeats. The comeback was therefore not just another victory at an early stage of the season, but the end of a very unfavourable pattern in their head-to-head meetings.
Xabi Alonso admitted that Chelsea must reduce the number of goals they concede and achieve a better balance between aggressive pressing, attacking initiative and protection of their own space. The Spanish coach, who according to Chelsea's official announcement took charge of the team on 1 July 2026 on a four-year contract, had not lost a league match in his new job before the game at the Emirates. After the defeat, he emphasised that Chelsea want to be proactive and press their opponents high, but also that the team is still going through the early stages of adapting to a new playing model. Chelsea collected all six points from the opening two rounds, so the trip to the champions represented the first more serious test of how quickly Alonso can stabilise the team against elite opposition. Although the result was not favourable, the visitors showed in several phases that they can cause Arsenal problems, particularly in transition and through the individual quality of players such as Rogers, Neto, Cole Palmer and Estêvão.
Rogers immediately became an important part of the new Chelsea
Morgan Rogers was also at the centre of the story because of his summer transfer. Chelsea officially confirmed that the 23-year-old England international arrived from Aston Villa and signed a contract until 2033, while the club announcement did not disclose the transfer fee. British media, including Sky Sports, highlighted before and after the derby that Rogers had also been an Arsenal transfer target during the summer, which gave his goal at the Emirates additional symbolism. Although Chelsea ultimately left without any points, Rogers continued his very strong individual start to the season. According to Opta, he became the first Chelsea player since Eden Hazard in the 2018/19 season to be involved in a goal in each of the club's first three league matches of a season, and the first Englishman to do so for Chelsea since Frank Lampard in the 2002/03 season.
Rogers' arrival is part of Chelsea's broader reshaping under Alonso. Ahead of the season, the Premier League highlighted that the club has no European commitments in 2026/27, giving the coach more time to work between domestic matches, but also increasing expectations in the league. The squad possesses a great deal of attacking talent, but the match against Arsenal showed that the ability to control a game after taking the lead will be just as important as speed and creativity in attack. Chelsea went ahead almost from their first serious attack, but then spent a long period defending under pressure and struggled to retain the ball high enough up the pitch to relieve their defence. Alonso must now find a model in which aggression remains an advantage without opening too much space against teams capable of combining quickly behind the first line of the press.
Arsenal's perfect start and the challenge of defending the title
For Arsenal, the victory is particularly important in the context of defending the title. The Premier League confirmed that Arteta's team won the 2025/26 championship with 85 points, seven more than second-placed Manchester City, ending a 22-year wait for the title. It was Arsenal's fourth title in the Premier League era and their first since the famous unbeaten 2003/04 season. The new campaign therefore brings a different kind of pressure: the club is no longer trying to catch the champions, but must respond every week to the status of being the team everyone wants to beat. In its season preview, the Premier League also noted that Arsenal have not won two consecutive league titles for more than 90 years, demonstrating how historically significant a successful defence of the trophy would be.
The start of the season has so far been almost ideal. Opta states that Arsenal won all three of their opening league matches while conceding only one goal, something they had previously achieved in club history only in the 1924/25 and 2003/04 seasons. The latter comparison naturally attracts attention because it refers to the season in which Arsenal, under Arsène Wenger, won the championship unbeaten, although it is far too early to draw major conclusions after only three rounds. More important for Arteta is that his team is already showing several different ways of winning: it can control a match while allowing few chances, threaten from set pieces, but also respond when a game becomes open and unpredictable. The derby against Chelsea offered exactly that kind of test, because after the early shock Arsenal had to play faster and take more risks than they are often comfortable with.
Nine points for Arsenal, first defeat for Chelsea
After three rounds, Arsenal and Manchester City have a maximum nine points and remain the only teams with a 100 percent record, as confirmed by Chelsea's official data as well as reports from Reuters and Opta Analyst. Chelsea stayed on six points, three behind the leading pair, and suffered their first defeat of the new league season. At such an early stage, the table does not yet provide a reliable picture of the title race, but direct meetings between leading contenders can be important for confidence, the development of tactical identity and later head-to-head advantage. Arsenal emerge from their first major test with confirmation that they can survive a poor start and turn a match around against a high-quality opponent. Chelsea, on the other hand, leave the Emirates without points, but with enough dangerous periods of play to suggest that the defeat does not have to mean an end to the positive beginning of Alonso's era.
The schedule immediately brings new commitments. According to the official schedule Chelsea cited after the match, the London club host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on 9 September in the third round of the Carabao Cup, followed by a home league match against Hull City on 12 September. For Alonso's team, this will be an opportunity to respond quickly after their first defeat and further strengthen the defensive mechanisms that came under heavy pressure at the Emirates. Arsenal, meanwhile, will continue the season with a perfect record and further confirmation that the core of the title-winning team still possesses enough quality for matches of the highest intensity. Victory over Chelsea will not decide the title race in September, but it has already sent a clear early signal: the reigning champions have not entered the new season merely intending to defend what they won, but to try to set the standard again.
