Astana takes over the 2026 World Wrestling Championships after Bahrain withdraws

Astana will be the new host of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships, after United World Wrestling announced that the competition is being moved from Manama to Kazakhstan. According to the world wrestling federation’s announcement of May 22, 2026, the championships will be held from October 24 to November 1, 2026, and the decision was made after considering the current geopolitical situation and its possible impact on international travel. This changed the plan under which Bahrain was supposed to host the most important senior world competition in this sport.

UWW stated that its Bureau decided at a meeting on Friday to change the host after “careful consideration” of circumstances that could make it more difficult for athletes, coaching staffs, referees and official delegations to arrive. The official announcement specifically mentions uncertainty and the impact on international travel, which is one of the key logistical factors in organizing a major multi-day championship. Manama was awarded the hosting rights last year in Zagreb, during the World Championships, and the change has now been confirmed by a joint decision of UWW and the Bahraini wrestling authorities.

The new hosting rights were awarded to the Kazakhstan Wrestling Federation after visits and inspections of potential venues. Barys Arena in Astana was selected as the competition venue, an arena that already has experience with a major wrestling competition because the 2019 World Championships were held there. In its announcement, UWW emphasized that checking the readiness of the facility and the organizational conditions was an important part of the decision on the replacement host. The detailed schedule of bouts and other organizational information should be published later.

The decision was made because of travel and geopolitical uncertainty

The change of host comes at a time when international sports federations increasingly have to assess not only the quality of competition venues, but also the stability of transport routes, security circumstances and the possibility of the timely arrival of a large number of participants from different parts of the world. In the case of the World Wrestling Championships, this is a competition that brings together national teams from a large number of national federations, and any change in air traffic, visa regimes or security assessments can directly affect the staging of the tournament. UWW therefore explained the decision as a responsible approach toward participants and national federations.

According to UWW’s official announcement, Manama was supposed to host the championships because the competition was awarded to it during last year’s championships in Zagreb. That decision was then presented as historic for Bahrain and the wider Arab region, because no Arab country had previously hosted the senior World Wrestling Championships. In 2025, UWW emphasized that Bahrain wanted to use the successes of its top wrestlers to develop the sport and strengthen its domestic base of athletes. The current relocation does not change the importance of that ambition, but it postpones the moment when Bahrain would host this competition for the first time.

The official information does not state that the decision is connected with a lack of sporting or technical capacity in Bahrain. The emphasis is placed on the broader international context and on travel, which is important because world wrestling championships include strictly scheduled appearances in Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s wrestling. For organizers, this means that changes must be made early enough to leave national federations time to plan preparations, accommodation, equipment transport and official procedures. Since the championships are being held in late October and early November 2026, the decision in May leaves several months for adjustment.

Astana returns to the world wrestling map

The choice of Astana is not surprising because the capital of Kazakhstan already hosted the World Championships in 2019. In its latest announcement, UWW recalled that nearly a thousand wrestlers took part in that edition, ranking it among the most attended competitions of that kind. Barys Arena was then the central venue of the tournament, and the experience with a large number of competitors, expert teams, referees, journalists and spectators was now clearly an important argument in choosing the replacement host. For sports federations, such previous experience reduces risk in a situation when the host is changed relatively late in relation to the preparation cycle.

Barys Arena in Astana is known as a multipurpose sports facility that can accommodate major indoor events. Kazakhstan’s Qazinform agency, citing the country’s National Olympic Committee, reported that the decision was confirmed after assessing the readiness of the venue and the organizational conditions. The same report states that the detailed competition schedule and additional organizational elements will be published later. This means that, for now, the general dates and host city are known, while the timetable by disciplines and categories will be the subject of a separate announcement.

Kazakhstan has a strong wrestling tradition and regularly achieves notable results on the Asian and world stage. For a country that invests in combat sports, hosting the World Championships represents both sporting and organizational capital. UWW announced that it will continue helping national federations prepare for the championships, which is especially important after the change of host city. Such support usually includes timely information about the schedule, registrations, technical rules and logistical procedures, in order to make it easier for national federations to plan their arrival.

Bahrain loses a historic edition of the championships

The original decision for Manama to host the 2026 World Championships was announced in September 2025 in Zagreb. UWW then stated that Bahrain would become the first Arab country to host the World Wrestling Championships. UWW President Nenad Lalović and Bahrain Olympic Committee Secretary General Faris Al-Kooheji took part in the press conference and signed the hosting agreement at the time. In that announcement, UWW particularly emphasized that Bahrain wanted to expand the wrestling base and use the international event to popularize the sport.

One of the reasons Bahrain came into the focus of the global wrestling public in the first place was the success of Akhmed Tazhudinov, Bahrain’s freestyle representative. In its 2025 announcement, UWW stated that Tazhudinov won Olympic gold in Paris in the 97-kilogram category, and before that also won the world champion title. In statements at the time, UWW President Nenad Lalović spoke about Bahrain wanting to use the success of a top wrestler as an incentive for the development of local athletes and the strengthening of the sport in schools and clubs. The relocation of the championships therefore also carries symbolic weight, because it postpones an event that was supposed to confirm the growth of wrestling in that country.

According to available official information, Bahrain and UWW announced a joint decision to postpone or relocate the championships, but they have not publicly presented a new date on which Manama could receive another edition of the same competition. Reports emphasize that this is an organizational decision connected with circumstances outside the sporting competition itself. For national federations, the most important fact is that the championships have remained in the same general period, from October 24 to November 1, but the host country is changing. This means the sporting calendar is not being completely disrupted, but logistical plans will have to be adjusted to the new destination.

What the change means for national teams and organizers

For national teams preparing for the World Championships, the change of host means a new logistical calculation. Federations will have to realign travel, accommodation, accreditations and equipment transport, and some plans that were connected with Bahrain will no longer apply. At the same time, the fact that Astana already had experience with the championships in 2019 could reduce the organizational risk. UWW’s announcement that the schedule will be published soon is important because national federations base their planning on precise dates for categories, weigh-ins and bouts.

The competition will be held as a senior World Championships, and the disciplines of Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling and women’s wrestling are expected. UWW has not yet published the final day-by-day program, so it has not been confirmed in which order individual categories will compete. At previous major competitions, the schedule was crucial for planning the arrival of athletes, because many national teams opt for phased arrivals depending on when individual categories are competing. A similar model can be expected in Astana as well, but final confirmation depends on the official program.

Organizers in Kazakhstan now face the coordination of the arena, official hotels, training spaces, transport and media procedures. A major wrestling championship requires multiple mats, technical support for scoring and video challenges, warm-up areas, medical services, anti-doping procedures and clear communication with national federations. Since Barys Arena has already been used for the same type of competition, the basic infrastructure exists, but every new edition requires separate technical preparation. UWW’s inspection of the venue was therefore an important step before Astana’s final confirmation.

The World Championships as the most important event of the season

The World Wrestling Championships are the most important annual competition outside the Olympic cycle and bring together the best representatives of national federations in Olympic and non-Olympic categories. For athletes who have already won Olympic medals, they are an opportunity to confirm dominance, while for younger competitors they can open the path toward the top of the world stage. In the year after the Olympic Games, generations often change, and by 2026 many national teams will already be shaping their squads with a view toward the next Olympic cycle. That is why hosting a tournament of this kind has significance that goes beyond just nine days of competition.

For Astana and Kazakhstan, the championships will be an opportunity for new international sporting visibility. In its announcement, UWW stated that strong audience interest is expected at Barys Arena, recalling the experience from 2019. Such expectations are based on the fact that wrestling is a popular sport in Kazakhstan, with a developed competitive base and an audience that follows major combat-sport events. For visitors planning to come to the championships, timely information about the schedule and tickets will be important, as will practical information about travel and accommodation in Astana during the championships.

From a sporting point of view, the change of host does not change the competitive importance of the championships. Medals won in Astana will carry the same weight as they would have if the tournament had been held in Manama, but preparation and travel conditions will change. National teams from Asia may find it logistically easier to plan their arrival in Kazakhstan, while some other delegations will have to adjust routes and time zones. Ultimately, the most important thing will be for the competition to be held in stable conditions and according to rules that apply to all participants.

The detailed schedule is expected to be announced

UWW has announced that the schedule for the World Championships in Astana will be published later. Until then, it remains confirmed that the competition will be held from October 24 to November 1, 2026, at Barys Arena. National federations now face a period of adjustment, while organizers in Kazakhstan are taking over the final phase of preparations for one of the biggest events in world wrestling. The change of host shows how sensitive the sporting calendar is to international circumstances, but also how important it is to have a proven replacement venue that can take over a major competition without a complete disruption of the season.

For Bahrain, the decision is a blow to the ambition to host the senior World Championships for the first time, but official announcements so far leave room for its role in international wrestling to continue developing through other competitions and development programs. For Astana, on the other hand, this is a return to a stage it already successfully hosted in 2019. If the organizers confirm UWW’s expectations and meet the requirements of national federations, the 2026 championships could turn into another major edition in a city that has already entered the history of world wrestling.
