HNL finished: four Croatian clubs go to Europe, draws in mid-June
With the end of the SuperSport HNL season, Croatia's representatives in the European qualifiers for the 2026/27 season are now known. Dinamo won the league title with 86 points, ahead of Hajduk, Varaždin and Rijeka, and the European allocation was additionally confirmed after the final of the SuperSport Croatian Football Cup in Osijek. According to the official match report of the Croatian Football Federation, Dinamo beat Rijeka 2:0 on 13 May 2026 at Opus Arena, in front of 11,055 spectators. Both goals were scored by Luka Stojković, in the 50th and 57th minutes, as the Zagreb club ended the season with a double crown. Since the Cup winner is also the national champion, the remaining European places were distributed through the league standings, so Croatia will be represented in the summer qualifiers by Dinamo, Hajduk, Rijeka and Varaždin.
Such an outcome brings four different European paths. Dinamo starts from the second qualifying round of the Champions League, where, according to the current coefficient lists, it will be seeded. Hajduk enters the first qualifying round of the Europa League and is also, according to the current state of the seedings, in the privileged part of the draw. Rijeka and Varaždin begin in the second qualifying round of the Conference League, but from a significantly different starting point: Rijeka is among the seeded teams due to its higher club coefficient, while Varaždin is currently in the group of unseeded teams. The final circle of possible opponents will not be known until UEFA's subgroups, which are published immediately before the draw.
Dinamo in Champions League qualifying
Dinamo will open its European season in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, in the part of qualifying intended for national champions. According to UEFA's calendar for 2026, the draws for the first and second qualifying rounds of the Champions League are scheduled for 16 and 17 June, while the second qualifying round matches will be played on 21 and 22 July, with return legs on 28 and 29 July. This means Dinamo will learn the name of its opponent more than a month before its first official European appearance. At that stage of qualifying, it is also important that some potential opponents may come from first qualifying round ties, so the coaching staff must monitor several possible scenarios in preparing for the draw.
According to the current seeding list published by the specialized portal Kassiesa, Dinamo is seeded in the second qualifying round of the Champions League with a club coefficient of 46.500. Among possible opponents in the broader group of unseeded teams are clubs and ties such as Kairat, Universitatea Craiova, Riga, KÍ Klaksvík, Larne, The New Saints, AGF, Thun and Mjällby. That list is not the final draw group, but a framework that may be narrowed down after UEFA determines the subgroups. Seeded status gives Dinamo a more favorable starting position, but it does not remove the risk of demanding away matches, artificial pitches, long journeys or opponents who already have competitive rhythm in July.
The sporting stakes for Dinamo will be high already in the first European round. Advancing to the third qualifying round of the Champions League keeps the club on the path toward the league phase of Europe's strongest competition, but it is also important because of the safety net provided by the European qualifying system. According to UEFA's rules for the competition cycle, clubs eliminated from individual phases of Champions League qualifying generally continue their European season in the Europa League or the Conference League, depending on the phase and competition path. For that reason, Dinamo's appearance in the second qualifying round will not be only a fight for the next step toward the Champions League, but also an important part of the broader plan to secure a European autumn.
Hajduk is the first to take the field
Of the Croatian clubs, Hajduk will begin the European season the earliest. The Split club goes into the first qualifying round of the Europa League, whose draw, according to UEFA's calendar, is scheduled for 16 June 2026. The first matches of that round will be played on 9 July, and the return legs on 16 July. The gap between the draw and the first match will be short, so operational and sporting preparation will have to be very precise, especially if the draw brings a logistically demanding away trip.
According to the current seeding list for the Europa League, Hajduk is among the seeded teams in the first qualifying round with a club coefficient of 10.000. In the circle of possible unseeded teams, according to current projections, are MSK Žilina, Vojvodina, Universitatea Cluj, NK Aluminij, Derry City and IF Vestri. Such status means that Hajduk avoids the highest-ranked clubs among the participants in that phase in the first round, but at the same time it cannot count on easy progress based only on coefficient. Qualifiers in July often bring opponents from leagues with different calendars, early squad changes and matches in which the rhythm of the season is just as important as the quality of the team.
For Hajduk, the first European tie is also important because of the club coefficient. Every passage through qualifying increases the possibility of better status in future draws, while entering later rounds also opens more significant financial and sporting effects. The Europa League carries additional weight in that regard because it is UEFA's second-tier club competition, and the path to the league phase is generally more demanding than in the Conference League. Hajduk will therefore enter the first round as a seeded team, but also with a clear obligation to confirm the advantage from the draw on the pitch.
Rijeka and Varaždin open the Conference League in the second qualifying round
Rijeka and Varaždin are Croatia's representatives in the Conference League, and both clubs start from the second qualifying round. According to UEFA's schedule, the draw for that phase will be on 17 June 2026, the first matches will be played on 23 July, and the return legs on 30 July. That gives them somewhat more time for preparation than Hajduk, but it also brings a different type of uncertainty because a large number of clubs from different national championships and qualifying paths will participate in the draw. The Conference League at that stage is often a very broad competition, with opponents from western, central, northern, eastern and southeastern Europe.
According to current coefficients, Rijeka enters the second round of the Conference League as a seeded team. This is the result of earlier European appearances and a higher club coefficient, not only the ranking in the just-ended domestic season. Seeded status should protect Rijeka from the strongest clubs in the round, but it does not guarantee a simple job. In Conference League qualifying, clubs often appear that have a lower coefficient but stable domestic results, a strong home atmosphere or experience in early European matches.
Varaždin, unlike Rijeka, is among the unseeded teams according to the current projection. That means it could get a significantly stronger opponent already at its first European step. On the broader list of possible seeded teams in the second qualifying round of the Conference League are, among others, Ajax, Copenhagen, Panathinaikos, Raków, Partizan, Lugano, AEK Larnaca, Başakşehir, CFR Cluj, HJK and Zrinjski. The final list of opponents for Varaždin will depend on UEFA's subgroups, but it is already clear that its coefficient does not bring it a privileged position. For a club that finished the domestic season ahead of Rijeka, this is an important reminder that UEFA's seeding system values multi-year European continuity, not only the most recent league placement.
Why Dinamo's Cup victory was decisive for the allocation
The European allocation in Croatian football this season depended directly on the Cup final. Had Rijeka won the Cup, it would have had a separate place through the national cup, and the distribution of clubs by competitions could have been different. Dinamo's 2:0 victory meant that the same club won both the league and the Cup, so the unused Cup place was transferred through the league standings. According to available lists of qualified clubs for UEFA competitions, Dinamo is listed in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, Hajduk in the first qualifying round of the Europa League, and Rijeka and Varaždin in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
In such a structure, the key difference is between domestic placement and European coefficient. The domestic standings determine who gets the right to play in European qualifying, while UEFA's coefficient largely determines how favorable a club's position in the draw will be. That is why Dinamo, Hajduk and Rijeka enter the first rounds as seeded teams or with more favorable status, while Varaždin, despite finishing third in the league, must count on a tougher draw. Such a system especially rewards clubs that regularly play in Europe and collect points over several seasons.
According to UEFA's explanations and lists of qualified clubs, the final participation of clubs in European competitions is always connected with licensing and the formal competition rules. In its overview of qualified clubs, Kassiesa states that participants are assumed to be qualified if they obtain a UEFA licence for European football. In sporting terms, Croatia's allocation is concluded, but administrative processes and official confirmations are part of the usual procedure before the start of a new European season. For that reason, the seeding lists may technically be adjusted until the draw, especially if changes occur in other national competitions that affect the access lists.
Key dates of the European summer
Mid-June will be the first important reference point for Croatian clubs. UEFA's calendar lists 16 and 17 June as the dates of the draws for the first and second qualifying rounds of European club competitions. Hajduk will learn its opponent in the first qualifying round of the Europa League on 16 June, while Dinamo, Rijeka and Varaždin will learn their first opponents in the second qualifying round the following day, if UEFA does not change the schedule. After that comes a period of very short preparation, especially for clubs that will have to organize travel to distant away matches.
- 16 June 2026. draw for the first qualifying round of the Europa League, in which Hajduk participates.
- 17 June 2026. draw for the second qualifying round of the Champions League for Dinamo and the second qualifying round of the Conference League for Rijeka and Varaždin.
- 9 and 16 July 2026. matches of the first qualifying round of the Europa League.
- 21/22 and 28/29 July 2026. matches of the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
- 23 and 30 July 2026. matches of the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
The results in those rounds will also be important for Croatia's national coefficient. UEFA's system for ranking national associations is based on clubs' results in European competitions, and a better coefficient can in the long term bring more favorable starting positions and a larger number of representatives in certain phases. For clubs, meanwhile, European qualifying means the possibility of a sporting step forward, increased revenue and stronger international standing. The first half of July will bring Hajduk's start, and the second half of the month the matches of Dinamo, Rijeka and Varaždin, after which it will be clearer how much Croatian representatives can extend the European summer.
