Durrës increasingly important in preparations for the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030
Preparations for the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030 are increasingly clearly expanding toward the Albanian coast. After coordination meetings and site visits held in Durrës, this Adriatic city has further strengthened its role in organizing the future multisport competition, above all as the host of the sailing disciplines. According to available information, representatives of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games, the Kosovo Olympic Committee and Albanian sports authorities took part in the inspections and discussions, and the aim was to coordinate issues related to venues, infrastructure and the operational preparation of competitions at sea.
This is an important step in a project that should have historic significance for Kosovo. The 2030 Mediterranean Games are officially connected with Prishtina, but because of the geographical fact that Kosovo has no access to the sea, part of the program must be organized outside its territory. That is precisely why Durrës, one of the most important Albanian coastal cities and transport hubs on the Adriatic, has become a logical partner for disciplines that depend on a marine water area. Official announcements by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games had already stated earlier that the interstate agreement between Kosovo and Albania formalizes Durrës as one of the host cities for the 2030 Games.
In the broader calendar of the Mediterranean Games, Prishtina 2030 comes after the Taranto 2026 edition, which will be held in Italy's Apulia region. According to the International Committee of Mediterranean Games, the games in Taranto are scheduled from 21 August to 3 September 2026, after a change of dates explained by climatic conditions in the region during the summer. After that, organizational attention will gradually shift toward Kosovo and Albania, where attempts are already being made to define the key elements of the sports program, logistics, financing and the legacy that the event should leave to local communities.
Inspections in Durrës and the role of Albanian institutions
The meetings held in Durrës had a practical character: they examined the city's capacities, the possibilities of accommodating sports operations along the coast, the needs of the sailing competition and coordination between Kosovo and Albanian institutions. According to reports by Albanian and regional media, the mayor of Durrës, Emiriana Sako, confirmed the city's readiness to actively participate in organizing the sailing competitions. Such political and administrative support is important because competitions at sea require not only sports infrastructure, but also the coordination of safety, traffic, access to the coast, port zones, technical areas, medical support and communication with international sports bodies.
In recent announcements, the Kosovo Olympic Committee stated that the institutions involved in organizing the Games took part in the preparations and that special attention in Durrës was devoted to the presentation of the Master Plan being prepared by RC Advisory Group. That company, according to the announcement by the Kosovo Olympic Committee, is responsible for strategic planning and the preparation of relevant documents for organizing the Games. In such projects, a Master Plan usually serves as a framework for coordinating the sports program, infrastructure, timelines, budget estimates and operational obligations, but the final details depend on the decisions of the organizing committee and international sports bodies.
Durrës does not have only a symbolic role in this process. Its coastline, connections with the rest of Albania and experience in hosting larger tourist and public events make it a practical choice for competitions that Prishtina and other Kosovo cities cannot organize. For visitors who will follow the sailing events during the Games, the availability of transport, hotel capacities and local services will also be important, so searches for accommodation in Durrës during the Mediterranean Games will probably begin early. Such interest, however, will depend on the final competition schedule, the number of accredited participants and the organizers' decision on zones intended for the public.
Why Durrës is crucial for sailing
Sailing is among the sports that require precisely defined natural and technical conditions from organizers. A suitable water area, safety protocols, places for equipment and boats, access for competitors and coaches, as well as a coordinated race monitoring system are needed. Since Kosovo has no sea coast, Albania's inclusion is not an addition outside the main project, but a functional solution without which certain disciplines would be difficult or impossible to carry out in accordance with international standards.
This was also clearly emphasized in discussions surrounding the ratification of the agreement between Kosovo and Albania. According to a Euronews Albania report, in April 2026 the Kosovo Assembly ratified the agreement with Albania with 93 votes in favor, with no votes against and no abstentions. Sports Minister Blerim Gashani then, according to the same source, explained that the inclusion of Durrës represents a functional and reasonable solution for organizing the sailing disciplines, given that Kosovo has no access to the sea. In the same context, it was emphasized that the agreement does not diminish Kosovo's role as host, but confirms a cooperation model in which Kosovo retains the main organizational responsibility, while Albania provides support for competitions that require a maritime location.
In December 2024, the International Committee of Mediterranean Games announced that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had signed a cooperation agreement for organizing the 2030 Games. That announcement stated that the agreement enables the organization of sailing in Durrës and at the same time formalizes that city as one of the hosts. Thus the Adriatic component of the project became an integral part of the official organizational framework, and not merely a temporary solution in the candidacy phase.
Prishtina 2030 as Kosovo's largest sports project
The Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030 are being announced as the largest sports event in Kosovo's history. According to the International Committee of Mediterranean Games, the participation of more than 3,500 athletes from 26 national Olympic committees that are members of that organization is expected. The official announcement of the Games' promotional video stated that the 21st edition of the Mediterranean Games will be held from 24 July to 4 August 2030. These dates give the organizers a little more than four years to complete preparations, but in the world of major multisport competitions this is a relatively short period, especially when new or renovated venues are being planned.
Kosovo won the right to organize the Games in 2023, which in a sporting and political sense was an important moment for a country that seeks to strengthen its international visibility through sports institutions. In announcements by the Kosovo government and sports institutions, the Games are described as a project that should improve infrastructure, open space for international promotion and encourage the development of sport in several local communities. According to earlier information from the International Committee of Mediterranean Games and Kosovo institutions, competitions will not be concentrated only in Prishtina, but should be distributed across several cities and municipalities, while Durrës would take over the part of the program connected with the sea.
Such a distribution can bring benefits beyond the sports sector itself, but it also carries significant organizational demands. Multisport events of this type include the coordination of delegation accommodation, medical services, security, transport, protocol, volunteers, technology, television production and results systems. If part of the program is held in another country, these demands become even more complex because different administrative systems, jurisdictions and security procedures must be coordinated. That is why the meetings in Durrës are important already at this stage: any ambiguity regarding responsibilities and deadlines can later cause delays or increased costs.
From Taranto 2026 to Prishtina and Durrës 2030
The next edition of the Mediterranean Games will be held in Taranto, a city in southern Italy that will host the 20th edition of the competition. According to the International Committee of Mediterranean Games, Taranto 2026 will run from 21 August to 3 September 2026 and will be the last major organizational stop before the Kosovo-Albanian project. For Prishtina and Durrës, the experiences from Taranto could be important because the Italian edition also relies on a combination of existing, renovated and new sports facilities, with an emphasis on coastal identity and the logistics of the wider region.
The Mediterranean Games have a special structure because they bring together national Olympic committees from countries that belong to the Mediterranean area, but the competition is not limited only to sport. Host cities use it for infrastructure investments, urban renewal, international promotion and strengthening sports systems. In the case of Prishtina 2030, this aspect is even more pronounced because Kosovo is taking on an event of such scope for the first time. Durrës, on the other hand, gains a role that connects the Albanian coast with a regional sports project and confirms that preparations go beyond the borders of a single state.
In practical terms, the success of this model will depend on how early the details of the program and schedule are confirmed. Athletes, delegations, national federations, media and spectators need clear information about venues, transport and the availability of services. Sailing competitions particularly depend on weather conditions, safety assessments and technical rules, so organizers will have to define competition and training zones in a timely manner. For the host city, this also means preparing local infrastructure, from traffic routes to communication with the public.
The political and sporting dimension of cooperation between Kosovo and Albania
The agreement between Kosovo and Albania on the Mediterranean Games also has a broader political dimension, although the organization itself is formally run as a sports project. According to the Euronews Albania report on the ratification of the agreement in the Kosovo Assembly, members of several parliamentary groups supported the arrangement, with remarks on the need for oversight of public spending, procurement procedures and organizational issues. Such discussions are common in major sports projects because their preparation involves significant public expenditure and long-term obligations.
Kosovo Sports Minister Blerim Gashani, according to the same report, presented the organization of the Games as a strategic achievement that puts Kosovo on the map of major international sports events. He also emphasized that the agreement with Albania determines the division of responsibilities, with Kosovo, as the host country, bearing the main financial burden of the overall organization. This wording is important because it shows that Durrës has a clearly defined partner role, but that the central responsibility for the project remains tied to Prishtina and Kosovo institutions.
For Albania, the inclusion of Durrës can bring additional international visibility to the coastal city and confirm its sports and tourism infrastructure. Durrës is already known as one of the busiest Albanian coastal destinations, and in the context of the Games it could attract athletes, coaches, official delegations, journalists and spectators. Since this is an event connected with travel and a public program, it is possible that as 2030 approaches there will be increasing demand for accommodation near coastal locations in Durrës, especially if the sailing schedule is open to a wider public.
Infrastructure, deadlines and open questions
Although the key political and institutional steps have already been taken, organizers still face a series of open questions. It is necessary to finalize the plans for sports venues, confirm the final schedule of disciplines, define the technical requirements of international federations and ensure that investments are completed early enough for test events. According to announcements by Kosovo sports institutions, the organizing committee and advisers are working on documents that should guide this process, but many details have not yet been publicly developed to a level that would allow a full assessment of operational readiness.
The issue of financing will be watched particularly closely. Major sports events often benefit from investments in infrastructure and international promotion, but they can also put pressure on public budgets if costs are not controlled. It will therefore be important how Kosovo and Albanian institutions report on planning, procurement, contracts and the execution of works. Topics of auditing, budget spending and employment have already been mentioned in discussions in the Kosovo Assembly, which shows that transparency will be one of the key conditions for political and public support for the project.
Within this framework, Durrës will have to align local needs with international competition standards. The sailing program requires safety plans at sea, coordination with port and maritime services, arrangement of areas for equipment and crews, and clear communication with residents and visitors. If preparations are carried out on time, the city could gain experience and infrastructure useful even after the end of the Games. If delays occur, precisely the international component and the distance from the main organizational center could become an additional challenge.
Durrës as the Adriatic link of the Mediterranean Games
The latest coordination meetings and inspections confirm that Prishtina 2030 is not being prepared only as a Kosovo project, but as a regional organizational effort in which Albania has a concrete and recognizable role. Durrës is crucial in that plan because it enables sailing to remain part of the program in conditions where the host country has no sea coast. Such a model is not unusual in modern sport, but it requires clear rules, strong coordination and the timely resolution of practical issues.
By 2030, organizers will have to show that political agreements can be turned into an efficient operational structure. For Prishtina, the Games will be a test of institutional capacity and an opportunity for international affirmation. For Durrës, they will represent an opportunity for the Adriatic coast to be included in one of the largest sports events of the Mediterranean area. The success of that partnership will depend on how early and precisely sporting requirements, public infrastructure, financing and the expectations of all participants are coordinated.
