FIFA unveils the fans' 2026 World Cup Dream XI: champions and biggest stars in the ideal lineup
Following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA unveiled the fans' ideal team of the tournament, officially named the Dream XI. Voting was conducted on FIFA's digital platform, and the final lineup was arranged in a 4-3-3 formation. It features Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha; defenders Pedro Porro, Dayot Upamecano, Lisandro Martínez and Marc Cucurella; midfielders Rodri, Jude Bellingham and Michael Olise; and forwards Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Spain and France each have three representatives, Argentina has two, while Cabo Verde, England and Norway are represented by one player apiece. This means that the selected eleven come from six national teams, although some of the first media reports incorrectly stated that there were seven.
It is important to distinguish this selection from the individual official awards presented after the final. The Dream XI was created through fan voting, meaning that it reflects a combination of performances on the pitch, the impression the players made during the tournament and their popularity among the public. FIFA's official awards produced a different outcome in several positions: Rodri won the Golden Ball as the best player, Unai Simón received the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper, and Pau Cubarsí was named the best young player. That is precisely why the selection of Vozinha instead of Simón, as well as the omissions of Cubarsí and Lamine Yamal, are the most intriguing aspects of the fan vote.

The distribution of places clearly shows how strongly the final stages of the tournament influenced public perception. World champion Spain earned one player in central defence, one in midfield and another full-back, while France, despite losing to Spain in the semi-final and to England in the third-place match, is also represented by three players. Argentina, the tournament finalist, has two representatives, but none in midfield. England entered through Bellingham, Norway through Haaland, and Cabo Verde through the goalkeeper who became one of the greatest surprises of the entire championship.
Vozinha ahead of the Golden Glove winner
The biggest surprise is in the goalkeeper position. Fans gave the advantage to Vozinha, the 40-year-old Cabo Verde goalkeeper, even though Unai Simón won the world title with Spain and received FIFA's Golden Glove. According to data published by FIFA, Simón finished the tournament with seven clean sheets, a new record for a goalkeeper at World Cups. Spain conceded only one goal in eight matches, the fewest by any world champion in the history of the competition, so the omission of its goalkeeper from the fans' eleven attracted particular attention.
Vozinha's selection nevertheless has a strong sporting foundation. Cabo Verde made its World Cup debut, and its goalkeeper became the symbol of a courageous team performance that stopped one of the main favourites in the group stage. FIFA named him Player of the Match in the goalless draw against Spain. The official statistics from that match show that Spain attempted 27 shots, seven of them on target, but failed to beat the island nation's goalkeeper. That result remained one of the most memorable moments of the group stage and had a major influence on Vozinha's status among fans.
According to a report by Cadena SER, Vozinha received 39 percent of the vote in the final ballot and finished ahead of Simón, Emiliano Martínez and Jordan Pickford. Such an outcome demonstrates that a fan selection does not have to follow the official awards or the overall team result. Simón had the statistical and trophy-based argument, but Vozinha embodied the story of an underdog who exceeded expectations on the biggest stage. As a result, the ideal team included a player from a national side that did not reach the final stages but left one of the strongest individual impressions.
Spanish full-backs rewarded, centre-backs left out
The defensive four consists of Pedro Porro, Dayot Upamecano, Lisandro Martínez and Marc Cucurella. Porro and Cucurella therefore represent the defence of the new world champion, while the central positions went to a French and an Argentinian centre-back. Porro's selection was further strengthened by his important contribution during the closing stages of the tournament. FIFA named Pedro Porro Player of the Match in the semi-final in which Spain defeated France 2-0, and the right-back also scored one of the goals that sent Luis de la Fuente's team into the final.
During the championship, Cucurella played an important role in build-up play, pressing and maintaining width on the left side. His inclusion in the Dream XI fits the overall picture of Spanish dominance, but the fan selection simultaneously raised questions about other members of the champions' defence. Pau Cubarsí, winner of the award for the tournament's best young player, and Aymeric Laporte were not included in the final eleven. According to Spanish media reports about FIFA's voting process, the two centre-backs were not even among the nominated candidates for the central defensive positions, despite forming the core of a defence that conceded only one goal.
Upamecano earned his place through his performances for a French team that reached the semi-finals, while Lisandro Martínez was one of Argentina's key defensive pillars on the road to the final. Their selection shows that fans valued individual intensity, duelling ability and consistency throughout the knockout stage, rather than only the final standings. However, the comparison with Cubarsí and Laporte is a reminder that the final voting result also depends on the initial list of candidates. A player who is not offered as an option cannot earn a place, regardless of statistics or awards won.
Rodri as the central figure of the champions
There are no surprises in midfield when it comes to Rodri. FIFA named him the best player of the tournament after the final and awarded him the Golden Ball, while the fans also included him in the Dream XI. His role was crucial to the way Spain controlled matches: he dictated the tempo, connected defence and attack and allowed his more creative teammates to operate closer to the opposition goal. In the final against Argentina, according to official FIFA statistics, Spain held a significant advantage in possession, number of passes and shots, with Rodri once again serving as the central point of the team's structure.
Spain won the final on 19 July 2026 by 1-0 after extra time, thanks to Ferran Torres' goal in the 106th minute. It was Spain's second world title, following its triumph in 2010, and once again it was secured by a narrow victory after extra time. FIFA announced that the national team finished the championship with a record seven clean sheets and only one goal conceded throughout the entire tournament. Rodri's selection is therefore not merely a reward for individual quality, but also recognition of the player who best represented the control and stability of the new world champion.
Jude Bellingham and Michael Olise were selected alongside him. Bellingham was one of the leaders of England, which finished in third place, and ended the tournament with seven goals according to the competition's final statistical reviews. His ability to arrive from deep, physical power and influence in key matches made him a natural candidate for the fans' lineup. Olise, on the other hand, was France's main creator and finished the championship with seven assists, the best total at the tournament. His partnership with Mbappé was one of France's most dangerous attacking mechanisms.
An attack composed of three global stars
The front three consists of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, three players who defined different phases of the championship. Mbappé won the Golden Boot with ten goals and finished as the tournament's top scorer. France failed to repeat its status as a finalist from 2022, but its captain was once again individually among the most dominant players in the competition. His pace, finishing and combination play with Olise enabled France to make a deep run through the knockout stage, and the fan selection merely confirmed that he was an indispensable member of the ideal lineup.
Messi reached his third World Cup final with Argentina and finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists. FIFA announced that he played his 34th World Cup match in the final, further extending his own record. At the age of 39, he became the oldest outfield player to appear in a World Cup final. Argentina failed to defend the title won in 2022, but Messi remained the team's key organiser, goalscorer and symbol at this tournament as well.
Haaland scored seven goals in his first World Cup appearance. After only his first four matches, FIFA highlighted that he had achieved a total last recorded among tournament debutants by Grzegorz Lato in 1974. Thanks to his finishing, Norway reached the quarter-finals, where it was eliminated by England. Although he did not play in the closing stages, his powerful start and seven goals were enough for him to retain his place ahead of numerous forwards who remained in the tournament for longer.
Why Lamine Yamal and Unai Simón are absent
The omissions of players from the new world champion generated the greatest debate. Unai Simón won the Golden Glove, set a record with seven clean sheets and was part of the tournament's best defence, but the fans opted for Vozinha. Lamine Yamal played in all eight of Spain's matches and, together with Cubarsí, set a record for the number of World Cup appearances before the age of 20. FIFA also pointed out that the two 19-year-olds joined a very small group of teenagers who both appeared in and won a final.
Yamal's absence can nevertheless be explained by the exceptionally strong competition in attack. Mbappé was the top scorer, Messi led Argentina to the final, and Haaland scored seven goals on his tournament debut. In such competition, fan voting often rewards the number of goals and global recognition. This does not diminish Yamal's contribution to Spain's title, but demonstrates how difficult it is to select only one attacking trio after a tournament featuring a large number of outstanding individuals.
The situation is similar with Cubarsí. The official award for best young player confirms that his tournament was rated exceptionally highly, but he did not make the Dream XI. In his case, the way the defensive candidate selection was organised was also decisive. The fans' ideal team is therefore not a definitive expert judgement on the eleven objectively best players, but the result of a predetermined list and the preferences of the public.
Dream XI as a summary of a record-breaking championship
The 2026 World Cup was the first to feature 48 national teams and 104 matches, as well as the first to be jointly hosted by three countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. According to FIFA data, 308 goals were scored during the tournament, while 6,810,966 spectators attended matches in the stadiums. Spain defeated Argentina after extra time in the final in the New York and New Jersey area and became the first country simultaneously to hold the men's and women's world championship titles.
The fans' Dream XI accurately reflects the main stories of such a championship. It includes the champions led by the tournament's best player, the finalists represented by Messi and Martínez, the French attacking partnership of Olise-Mbappé, England's leader Bellingham and Norway's debutant Haaland. At the same time, the goalkeeper position went to Vozinha, a representative of a national side that demonstrated at its first World Cup how the expanded format can create room for new football stories.
The final lineup is therefore not merely a review of the statistically most successful footballers. It is also a picture of what the public remembered most: Spanish control, French attacking power, Argentina's journey to another final, England's breakthrough, Norway's finishing and Cabo Verde's sensational resistance. It is precisely this combination of trophies, numbers, major names and surprises that explains why the fans' selection differs from FIFA's official individual awards in several important respects.
