Alejandro Garnacho nearing Chelsea exit: Roma submitted an offer, but the transfer structure remains the key problem
London, United Kingdom
Alejandro Garnacho could leave Chelsea only one year after arriving at Stamford Bridge, with Roma emerging on 14 July 2026 as the most serious candidate for his signature. Italian media report that the Rome-based club has already formalised its interest with an offer that includes a paid loan and the possibility of a subsequent purchase, while Chelsea continue to favour a permanent sale. As a result, the negotiations are not close to completion, but several sources confirm that contacts between the clubs and the player's representatives have intensified. According to the available information, Garnacho is open to a move to Serie A and the opportunity to play in the Champions League, while the London club want to resolve his status before preparations for the 2026/27 season enter their final phase. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed, and the difference between what Roma are offering and the model Chelsea are demanding remains the main obstacle.
Roma offered a loan worth five million euros
According to a report by the LaRoma24 portal, which cites information from Italian journalists specialising in transfers, Roma offered five million euros for a one-year loan and a further 35 million euros through an option to buy. The proposed option could become an obligation if previously agreed conditions are met, including the number of Garnacho's appearances and the results Roma achieve during the season. Such a structure would allow the Italian club to spread the cost over several accounting periods and reduce the immediate financial pressure, while it could guarantee Chelsea a sale if the player becomes a regular member of the team and the club meets its sporting objectives. LaRoma24 reported on 14 July that the initial proposal had been rejected, but also that Roma were preparing a new attempt with more precisely defined conditions for a future purchase. This means that the talks have not been terminated, but are focused on how binding the permanent part of the deal would have to be.
Chelsea, on the other hand, value Garnacho at approximately 50 million euros, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport and English reports, and currently do not want a straightforward loan with a non-binding option. The London club have a strong negotiating position because the Argentina international signed a contract until 2032 in August 2025. The long contract gives Chelsea time to wait for other offers, including interest from Premier League clubs, other European leagues and Saudi Arabia. At the same time, retaining a player who is not central to the new manager's plans carries sporting and financial risks, particularly if his playing time is reduced further. That is precisely why Roma believe Chelsea could become more flexible during the transfer window if no buyer emerges who is prepared to pay the requested amount immediately.
Xabi Alonso confirmed interest from other clubs
Garnacho's future became even more uncertain after Xabi Alonso's first public appearances as Chelsea manager. Alonso, who officially took charge of the team on 1 July 2026, said that he had discussed the player with the club's sporting department and confirmed that other clubs were interested in him. The Spanish coach did not announce that a transfer had been agreed and did not publicly name Roma, but said that he hoped for an outcome that would benefit all parties involved. That wording was interpreted as confirmation that Chelsea are actively seeking a solution, although the club have not announced through their official channels that Garnacho has been placed on the transfer list. According to talkSPORT and Italian reports, the player has not been included in the regular start of first-team preparations while the club and his representatives work on a possible departure.
Chelsea began preparations for the new season at Cobham in early July, with Alonso attempting to shape a smaller squad according to his own tactical requirements. Garnacho's situation is therefore not merely a matter of one offer, but part of a broader assessment of the attacking options following a disappointing club season. English media report that the London management want to recover most of the amount invested in his arrival from Manchester United, which was valued at around 40 million pounds according to reports at the time. A sale for approximately 50 million euros would enable Chelsea to limit their financial loss and create space in the squad for players who fit Alonso's approach more effectively. However, potential buyers are aware that Chelsea want to sell, so they will attempt to exploit the time pressure to negotiate a more favourable structure.
A season with eight goals, but no permanent place in the starting line-up
Chelsea's official statistics show that Garnacho made 43 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, including 22 starts. He spent 2,397 minutes on the pitch, scored eight goals and provided four assists. Those figures are not insignificant for a player who spent much of the season in rotation, but they were not enough for him to establish himself as an indispensable member of the attack. His best moments came in cup competitions: he scored twice against Cardiff, then became the first Chelsea player to score two goals as a substitute in two consecutive matches after netting a brace against Arsenal. In the FA Cup, he scored against Wrexham and Port Vale, while his contribution in the Premier League was considerably more modest.
Such a return explains why two opposing assessments can be defended at the same time. Chelsea still see Garnacho as a 22-year-old player with elite-level experience, a long contract and a market value that should not decline sharply. Roma, however, are negotiating from the position that he failed to secure a permanent role in London and that a new club would assume part of the risk associated with his form and development. A loan with a conditional obligation to buy is therefore a way for the Rome club to link the price to his actual sporting contribution. For Chelsea, the same model is acceptable only if the conditions for activating the purchase are sufficiently realistic and practically guarantee a permanent transfer. The entire operation will probably be decided by that detail.
From Manchester United's great prospect to a new turning point
Garnacho joined Chelsea from Manchester United on 30 August 2025 and signed a seven-year contract. At the time, the club highlighted his 93 appearances and 16 Premier League goals for United, as well as a total of 48 direct goal contributions in 144 first-team matches at Old Trafford. A special place in his earlier career is occupied by the bicycle-kick goal against Everton, which won the FIFA Puskás Award for 2024. Before arriving in England, Garnacho grew up in Madrid and progressed through the youth systems of Getafe and Atlético Madrid, joining United as a 16-year-old. His early rise created the expectation that he would become one of the most dangerous wingers of his generation.
However, the move from United to Chelsea did not provide the stability he was seeking. In London, he occasionally displayed his pace, directness and ability to create an advantage in one-on-one situations, but he failed to maintain consistency throughout the season. Competition in the wide positions was strong, while the managerial change raised further questions about his long-term role. His age still makes him a development project, but after spells at two major English clubs, his next choice could be decisive for the next phase of his career. A move to Serie A would represent a change of competitive and tactical environment, but also an opportunity to become a player around whom a significant part of the attack is built once again.
Why Roma see Garnacho as an important part of the project
Following their return to the Champions League, Roma want to strengthen the squad with players capable of improving the quality in wide attacking areas. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that coach Gian Piero Gasperini is looking for a winger capable of attacking space, moving inside and creating situations in which the defence must react without the assistance of an additional player. Garnacho fits that profile because of his explosiveness and preference for vertical play, although he would have to improve his decision-making and efficiency in the final third. The Italian club believe that regular playing time and a more clearly defined role could restore the level of confidence he showed during his best periods in Manchester. According to the same source, the player is attracted by the opportunity to compete in the Champions League and work in a team that views him as an important option rather than merely part of a broad rotation.
In Rome, Garnacho could join an attack in which Paulo Dybala is one of the key technical authorities. Gazzetta reports that the two Argentinians have a good relationship, which could make it easier for him to adapt to a new league, language and the demands of the coaching staff. However, the player's personal preference is not sufficient for the transfer to be completed. Roma must align their investment in Garnacho with other planned deals and financial restrictions, which is why they are also considering other wingers in parallel. Interest in alternative targets also serves as protection if Chelsea do not soften their demand for an immediate permanent sale.
Negotiations could accelerate before preparations continue
The key dates are now linked to Chelsea's preparation schedule and the decision on which players will travel on the pre-season tour. English reports state that the club want to resolve Garnacho's status quickly so that Alonso can work with a more clearly defined group. This does not mean Chelsea will accept the first offer, but it increases the importance of Roma's next proposal. A possible compromise would be a paid loan with an obligatory purchase activated after easily achievable conditions, allowing Roma to defer most of the cost while giving Chelsea sufficient certainty that the transfer will become permanent. Another possibility is a direct sale with payment in instalments and add-ons linked to appearances, results or a future resale.
It is currently unclear whether Roma will increase the total value of the offer beyond 40 million euros or attempt to convince Chelsea to accept a more favourable payment schedule. It is also unknown whether other interested clubs have submitted formal offers, although reports mention broader interest from England, Italy and Saudi Arabia. Chelsea can therefore wait, but every further delay increases the possibility that Garnacho will miss an important part of preparations and arrive at his new club without full match fitness. Roma, meanwhile, want to secure a winger as soon as possible so that Gasperini has enough time for tactical preparation. Everything indicates that the next move will be an attempt to bring the loan model with an obligation to buy closer to the permanent transfer Chelsea are demanding.
For Garnacho, leaving after only one season would be an acknowledgement that his spell at Stamford Bridge did not develop as expected, but not necessarily a step backwards. At the age of 22, he already has more than 180 senior appearances for two major English clubs, Champions League experience and a prestigious individual international trophy for the finest goal of the year. In the right system, he can still turn his potential into more consistent production of goals and assists. Roma offer him the possibility of a new beginning at a high level, while Chelsea want a financially sustainable exit from a project that did not produce the expected result. An agreement will depend less on the player's desire, which reports suggest is present, and more on whether the clubs can transform two different transfer strategies into a single legally and financially acceptable formula.
