Halys and Herbert convincingly won the all-French doubles clash at Roland-Garros

The French pair Quentin Halys and Pierre-Hugues Herbert secured a place in the quarterfinals of the men's doubles at Roland-Garros 2026 with a 6:3, 6:3 victory against their compatriots Titouan Droguet and Hugo Gaston. According to the official tournament scorecard, the round-of-16 match, that is, the third round in the doubles competition, was played on June 1, 2026, on Court Simonne-Mathieu and lasted one hour and 12 minutes. The outcome confirmed that the Halys / Herbert combination, after a more demanding entry into the tournament, found a steady rhythm in Paris precisely at the stage where the draw begins to narrow seriously.

The duel had a distinctly home character because all four players competed under the French flag, but the competitive context was different. Halys and Herbert entered the match as the pair that had eliminated the fourth seeds Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski in the previous round, while Droguet and Gaston received their place in the main draw through a wildcard from the organizers. Roland-Garros had earlier announced that Droguet and Gaston were among the French combinations awarded wildcards for the men's doubles tournament, which makes their run to the round of 16 one of the more notable home results in that competition.

A secure performance without losing a set

Halys and Herbert reached victory without needing extended sets or a tie-break, which is especially important in doubles on clay because of the packed schedule and the small margin for drops in the scoreline. The official result of 6:3, 6:3 shows that the winners controlled both sets early enough and firmly enough not to allow their opponents to enter a final phase in which the pressure could have turned on one or two points. Although the Roland-Garros scorecard does not provide a wider statistical overview in the available summary, the final set ratio points to a stable serving performance and more efficient use of chances on return.

In doubles, such a result often also speaks of better coordination of movement at the net, because the difference is created not only by a powerful serve but also by quickly closing down space after the first shot. Herbert is a particularly recognizable player in that segment, with a long reputation as a specialist at the net and on the volley, while Halys brings a strong first shot and a rhythm that can shorten points. Against Droguet and Gaston, a pair that had already shown at the tournament that it could withstand long and uncertain matches, that combination brought a clear advantage.

The match ended after 72 minutes, which further emphasized the difference in efficiency. Droguet and Gaston had to spend significantly more energy in the first two rounds: in the first round they defeated Nicolas Barrientos and Ariel Behar in three sets, and then in the second round they eliminated the fifteenth seeds Robert Cash and James Tracy in a match that also went to three sets. Halys and Herbert, on the other hand, had already recorded a victory over one highly seeded pair before the round of 16, but against Droguet and Gaston they managed to avoid another long finish.

The path to the quarterfinals gained additional weight after the victory over the fourth seeds

The placement of Halys and Herbert in the quarterfinals cannot be viewed through just one match. According to the official Roland-Garros results, the French combination defeated Benjamin Bonzi and Grégoire Jacq 4:6, 6:3, 7:5 in the first round, after a comeback that lasted two hours. That encounter was a warning that their Paris campaign would require adjustment and patience, but also confirmation that the pair had enough experience and quality to come back from an unfavorable score.

In the second round came one of the more important victories of their tournament. Halys and Herbert defeated Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski, the fourth seeds, 6:4, 7:6, with the second set decided in a tie-break. That result significantly changed the picture of their section of the draw because the removal of the fourth seeds opened space for a pair that was not among the main seeds but had strong home support and one of the most experienced French doubles players in its lineup.

The victory over Droguet and Gaston therefore also had psychological value. After an emotionally demanding triumph against seeds, teams are often threatened by a drop in concentration in the next round, especially when playing against compatriots and in front of a crowd that has sympathy for both sides. Halys and Herbert passed that test without major fluctuations. In doing so, they confirmed that the result against Harrison and Skupski was not just an isolated step forward, but part of a broader rise in form during the second week of the tournament.

Droguet and Gaston made use of the wildcard, but were stopped in the round of 16

For Droguet and Gaston, defeat in the round of 16 does not erase the impression of a well-executed tournament. Roland-Garros announced that their combination was among the pairs that received a wildcard for the men's doubles tournament, and reaching the last sixteen pairs showed that they used that opportunity in a competitively convincing way. Already in the first round they eliminated the experienced South American combination Barrientos / Behar, and in the second round they outplayed the fifteenth seeds Cash and Tracy, which made their story much more important than merely participating in the draw.

Their tournament also had a broader French context. Roland-Garros traditionally gives wildcards to home players and combinations that might not have entered the main draw directly by ranking, but can bring local interest, experience on Parisian clay and an opportunity for a breakthrough in front of the home crowd. Droguet and Gaston came through exactly such a framework to matches in which they faced different profiles of opponents: from experienced international pairs to highly seeded opponents and, finally, a French combination that had more solutions in the round of 16.

In the match against Halys and Herbert, they did not find the same room for a comeback as in their first two appearances. The score by sets shows that both parts of the match went in the same direction, without a major change in dynamics. That does not diminish their tournament, but it clearly shows the boundary that is often placed in the closing stages of Grand Slam doubles before combinations that rely on a current wave of form. In later rounds, stability on serve, coordination and experience in decisive points take on even greater weight.

Herbert's experience as an important support for the French combination

Herbert's doubles biography gives special weight to this result. According to the official ATP Tour profile, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, with Nicolas Mahut, was part of one of the eight teams that completed the so-called career Grand Slam in men's doubles, with titles at the US Open in 2015, Wimbledon in 2016, Roland-Garros in 2018 and 2021 and the Australian Open in 2019. The ATP also states that Herbert won the season-ending tournament with Mahut in 2019 and 2021, which places him among the most successful French doubles players of the modern era.

Such experience is especially useful at Roland-Garros, where the pressure of the home stage can be an advantage, but also a burden. Herbert knows well the demands of Parisian clay, the rhythm of the tournament and the particularity of playing in front of a crowd that expects French success. Alongside Halys, who in singles brings a strong serve and a more aggressive baseline profile, Herbert has a partner who can open the court and create opportunities for quick finishes at the net.

Halys is not a player who is primarily defined through doubles at the level of Herbert's career, but exactly such combinations can often be awkward at Grand Slam tournaments. When a singles player with a good serve and a strong first shot joins with a doubles specialist, the result is a pair that can vary the rhythm and pressure opposing service games. In Paris, that formula proved effective enough to eliminate the fourth seeds and then reach the quarterfinals without losing a set.

The next obstacle will be Arends and Pel

The official Roland-Garros draw shows that Halys and Herbert will face the Dutchmen Sander Arends and David Pel in the quarterfinals. Arends and Pel reached that stage after a dramatic victory over the seventh seeds Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić, in a third-round match that, according to the official schedule, lasted two hours and 41 minutes. Thus the other part of that draw segment was also left without seeds, so the quarterfinal will bring a duel of pairs that reached the closing stages through victories over better-positioned combinations.

For Halys and Herbert, that means the next encounter will not be merely a continuation of the home momentum, but also a test against a pair that has already shown the ability to withstand a very tight match against established opponents. Arends and Pel advanced against Arévalo and Pavić after an extremely uncertain finish, which points to resilience and readiness for long service sequences. The French pair will therefore have to maintain the level of concentration from the round of 16, but also be ready for a match in which one lost service game can carry much more weight than against Droguet and Gaston.

The quarterfinals in men's doubles come in the final part of the tournament, as Roland-Garros 2026 approaches the final weekend. In its tournament preview, the ATP stated that the main draw is played from May 24 to June 7, while the men's doubles final is scheduled for June 6. In that schedule, every additional match brings less and less time for recovery and increasing importance for tactical preparation, especially for pairs that have already gone through several demanding encounters.

A result important financially and in terms of points

A place in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros also has concrete competitive value beyond prestige itself. In its official overview of the prize money for 2026, the ATP stated that the total tournament prize fund amounts to 61.723 million euros, while in the doubles competition prize money is paid per team. According to that overview, pairs that reach the round of 16 secure 45,000 euros per team, and quarterfinalists 82,000 euros. In addition, the ATP states in its tournament overview that the doubles quarterfinal carries 360 points, while the round of 16 is worth 180 points.

For players who often combine singles and doubles appearances, such points can have an important effect on planning the rest of the season. A good result in Paris brings not only prize money and visibility, but can open easier entry into future doubles tournaments, a better position in draws and greater flexibility when choosing partners. For Herbert, who already has an established career in this competition, it is a continuation of the fight at the highest level. For Halys, this is an opportunity to further confirm the value of his game in doubles as well, in a Grand Slam environment.

Roland-Garros in the 2026 season once again showed how unpredictable the doubles competition can be. The elimination of high seeds in the section of the draw where Halys and Herbert are located opened space for a different finish, but it did not reduce the weight of the task. On the contrary, pairs that survive such a series of surprises often come into the quarterfinals more relaxed, but also more dangerous, because they have already received confirmation that they can beat higher-ranked opponents.

The French pair remains in contention for the closing stages on home clay

The victory of Halys and Herbert against Droguet and Gaston is therefore more than a routine passage into the next round. It marks the continuation of a very good French story in men's doubles, but also confirms that the more experienced combination in this home encounter had a clearer plan and a calmer performance. Droguet and Gaston leave the tournament after a result that exceeds the expectations linked to their wildcard, while Halys and Herbert remain in a competition in which a realistic opportunity for an even bigger result is opening up.

The quarterfinal will show how much the 6:3, 6:3 victory can serve as a foundation for the continuation of the tournament. A short match means less energy spent, but also a higher level of expectations, especially when playing in front of a crowd that knows Herbert's successes on Parisian clay well. For now, the most important thing is that Halys and Herbert have settled their third match in a row with a victory, that they were convincing in the round of 16 and that they enter the closing stages of the tournament with a clear sense that their combination in Paris has enough quality for a serious result.
