European table tennis leadership in Istanbul coordinates preparations for the 2027 European Games

Preparations for the Istanbul 2027 European Games have entered a new phase of coordination for table tennis as well, following a meeting between European Table Tennis Union President Pedro Moura and Turkish Olympic Committee President Prof. Dr. Veli Ozan Çakır. According to the ETTU announcement of 20 May 2026, the meeting was held during Moura's visit to the WTT Feeder Istanbul tournament, and Turkish Table Tennis Federation President Kerim Koç also attended the discussion. The topic of the meeting was preparations for the fourth edition of the European Games, as well as the broader development of international table tennis in the years leading up to the Olympic cycle for Los Angeles 2028. The hosts particularly emphasized that table tennis in Istanbul will have a prominent role among the sports confirmed in the Games programme. The meeting thus moved beyond the framework of a protocol encounter and became part of a broader process defining the organizational, competitive and development priorities of one of the more important European multi-sport events.

Pedro Moura, who leads the European umbrella organization for table tennis, said after the meeting that the discussion was an opportunity to exchange ideas on preparations for the 2027 European Games and the future of the sport. The ETTU states that Moura emphasized the importance of open dialogue between federations and sports institutions, especially at a stage in which organizational standards and international cooperation are being specified. Çakır, who is also Executive Vice-President of the International Table Tennis Federation and Director of the 2027 European Games, stressed that the Turkish side wants to ensure the highest standards in organizing the table tennis part of the competition. According to the ETTU, he described table tennis as a sport with a special place in the international sports movement. Such a message is important because it confirms that table tennis is not being viewed only as one of the disciplines in a large schedule, but also as a sport through which the host wants to demonstrate organizational seriousness and existing infrastructure.

Table tennis confirmed in a programme with 26 sports

The European Olympic Committees announced in March 2026 that the EOC Executive Committee had approved the sports programme of the fourth European Games in Istanbul. The programme includes 26 sports and disciplines, among them 22 Olympic sports connected with the programme of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Table tennis is also on the official list, confirming its continuity within the European multi-sport framework. The EOC also stated that the Games will offer significant qualification opportunities for the Olympic cycle, either through direct quota places or through Olympic ranking systems, depending on the rules of individual sports and agreements with international federations. The inclusion of individual disciplines, according to the EOC, remains linked to the conclusion of appropriate agreements with the competent federations, which is a usual part of the preparatory process for events of this level.

The list of sports shows that Istanbul 2027 wants to combine traditional Olympic disciplines and sports that are gaining new momentum in the European programme. According to the EOC, beach sprint rowing, weightlifting and squash will appear in the European Games programme for the first time in Istanbul, while gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling are returning after not being part of the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 edition. In that context, table tennis is among the sports that have a stable international structure, a broad base of competitors and an important role in Olympic qualification systems. For European national teams, this means that the event in Istanbul will be more than a continental showcase; depending on the final qualification rules, it may also influence the path of individual athletes toward Los Angeles. That is precisely why early talks between the ETTU, Turkish sports institutions and the organizational leadership are important for clearly defining the competitive framework.

Istanbul as host of the fourth edition of the Games

Istanbul was confirmed as host of the 2027 European Games after a multi-stage institutional process. The European Olympic Committees announced that their Executive Committee unanimously awarded the fourth edition of the Games to Istanbul on 20 March 2024, following an evaluation presented by EOC Sports Director Peter Brüll. In May 2024, the EOC signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Rome with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Turkish Olympic Committee, which was a formal step toward the host city contract. The candidacy was then confirmed at the 53rd EOC General Assembly in Bucharest in June 2024, according to information published on the official channels of Sport Europe. Istanbul thus became host of the fourth edition of the competition, which was launched in 2015 in Baku, continued in Minsk in 2019 and in Kraków and the Małopolska region in 2023.

In EOC announcements, Istanbul is presented as a city with already developed sports infrastructure, which is one of the key arguments in preparing the Games. When signing the Memorandum, the EOC emphasized that no new permanent sports venues are planned for the event, but rather the use of existing infrastructure, with adjustments required for individual competitions. Such an approach was explained as a more cost-effective and more sustainable model, especially after the experience of the previous edition in Poland. The official Sport Europe website states that Istanbul has facilities such as the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Sinan Erdem Dome and other modern sports venues. This is important for table tennis because competition standards do not refer only to the hall and fields of play, but also to training sessions, equipment logistics, team accommodation, media access, security and the movement of athletes between official locations.

Why the meeting between the ETTU and Turkish institutions matters

The meeting between Moura and Çakır carries additional weight because it connects three levels of decision-making: the continental federation, the domestic Olympic leadership and the national table tennis federation. The ETTU is responsible for the interests of European table tennis, Turkish institutions bear the operational responsibility of the host, and the national federation has direct experience in organizing table tennis events in the country. According to the ETTU announcement, the meeting also discussed how Türkiye has become an important centre for table tennis in recent years thanks to the international competitions it has organized. Such a context helps explain why WTT Feeder Istanbul proved to be a suitable opportunity for discussing the European Games. Competitions of this type make it possible to test organizational capacities, technical procedures, communication with international bodies and audience interest.

Çakır, according to the ETTU, pointed out that table tennis will also have an important place in Istanbul's broader sporting positioning, including long-term ambitions connected with Olympic and Paralympic candidacies. Although the 2027 European Games are not the same as an Olympic bid, for the host city they represent a visible test of the ability to organize a major multi-sport event. In that sense, table tennis may have special value because it is a globally widespread sport with high technical requirements, clear television standards and a large number of matches in a short period. The successful organization of such a competition sends a message about the host's readiness for events that require precise operational coordination. For the ETTU, on the other hand, it is important that the European Games be a platform that brings the sport visibility, high-quality conditions and a sportingly relevant competition format.

The European Games as a stop on the road to Los Angeles 2028

The EOC directly linked the Istanbul 2027 programme with the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. EOC Coordination Commission Chair Mihai Covaliu said in March 2026 that Istanbul would be an important stage for European athletes, with a large number of Olympic disciplines and significant qualification opportunities. This does not mean that every discipline will automatically award direct Olympic quotas, but it confirms that the event will be integrated into the broader system of rankings and qualification opportunities. For table tennis, a sport in which the Olympic path has traditionally been based on a combination of continental qualifications, rankings and team criteria, such a position may carry concrete sporting weight. The final details depend on the rules that will be confirmed by the competent international bodies.

The European Games are also important for sports that want greater visibility outside their specialized competitive circles. Table tennis has a strong tradition in Europe, but in a multi-sport environment it enters a different media dynamic: the audience follows a broader event, national Olympic committees coordinate the appearances of several sports, and results are presented in the context of an overall European sporting showcase. For players and federations, this may mean greater exposure, especially if the competition has Olympic implications. For the host, a well-organized table tennis tournament can contribute to the overall impression of the quality of the Games, because it is a sport with a dense schedule, a large number of singles and team matches and demanding real-time results production. That is why the announcement that special attention will be devoted to table tennis is organizationally relevant, not merely declarative.

Organizational framework and sustainability of the event

Official EOC documents and announcements show that Istanbul 2027 is being prepared through cooperation between the EOC, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the Turkish Olympic Committee and the competent Turkish institutions. The Memorandum signed in Rome in 2024 laid the foundations for the host city contract, and later EOC announcements state that preparations are developing through coordination structures and discussions with federations. It has been particularly emphasized that the event is intended to be organized without the construction of new permanent competition venues, which is in line with the trend of reducing the financial and urban-planning burden of major sporting events. In practice, this means that existing facilities will have to be adapted to the standards of international federations, but also that the organizational focus will shift to logistics, security, transport, digital systems and services for athletes.

For table tennis, such a model can be an advantage if hall conditions, training schedules, technical equipment and the flow of competition are defined in time. Major table tennis competitions require stable lighting, appropriate flooring, control of the playing area, auxiliary halls and reliable results available to teams, media and spectators. The ETTU's early engagement can therefore be read as an effort to include sporting standards in planning before the final phase of preparations. At the same time, Turkish organizers want to show that existing infrastructure and experience with international events can meet the demands of a European multi-sport event. In such a relationship between federations and the host, timely exchange of information is crucial, because problems at major events are most often solved through quality planning, not improvisation in the final weeks.

Broader significance for European table tennis

For the ETTU, the 2027 European Games represent an opportunity for table tennis to maintain a strong position in the European sporting calendar. The competition in Istanbul comes at a time when sports are fighting for audience attention, media space and a clear connection with the Olympic cycle. Table tennis has an advantage in this respect because it is globally recognizable, technically attractive and relatively accessible to organize compared with some more infrastructure-demanding sports. However, visibility does not come by itself; it depends on the quality of the competition format, the presence of the best athletes, television production, digital availability of results and the ability of organizers to create conditions that will make the event relevant also for audiences beyond the narrow sporting circle. That is precisely why messages about cooperation between the ETTU, the Turkish Olympic Committee and the Turkish Table Tennis Federation are important for the future position of the discipline.

Istanbul 2027 will also be an important indicator of the development of the European Games as a project. After three previous editions, the EOC is seeking to strengthen the competition as a key European multi-sport platform, and linking it with qualifications for Los Angeles 2028 gives it additional sporting weight. For table tennis, which has a dense international calendar and strong competition from other tournaments, it is important that the European Games be clearly positioned, organizationally high-quality and competitively relevant. Moura's visit to Istanbul and discussion with Çakır can therefore be viewed as an early signal that table tennis wants to prepare in time, with clear requirements and a partnership-based relationship with the host. According to currently available information, details on specific venues, the exact format of the table tennis competition and possible Olympic qualification mechanisms will be announced later.
