Jan Bienduga stays at Legia: 18-year-old goalkeeper signs contract until 2029 with extension option
Legia Warszawa has tied down one of the most promising goalkeepers from its academy for the long term. The Polish club announced on 10 August 2026 that Jan Bienduga, who turned 18 on the same day, had signed a new three-year contract with the possibility of extending it for another season. This means his stay in Warsaw is secured until at least 2029, and if the club activates the additional option, the cooperation could continue until 2030. Legia presented the decision as part of the long-term development of a goalkeeper who came through its academy, already trains with the first team and at the same time gains senior experience with the reserve side. Bienduga wears number 59 in Legia's senior team.
The new contract comes during a period in which Bienduga's status at the club is changing rapidly. Until recently, he was primarily a goalkeeper for the youth teams and the second team, while since January 2026 he has regularly been involved in first-team activities. According to Legia's official announcement, he took part in both the winter and summer training camps and at the beginning of August was included in the matchday squad for a first-team league game for the first time. It happened in the second round of the Polish Ekstraklasa against Zagłębie Lubin, in a match that Legia won 3:1 at its stadium in Warsaw. Although Bienduga is still waiting for his official league debut for the first team, simply being included in the squad shows how close he has come to senior level.
From the academy to the first team
Bienduga entered Legia's academy system at the age of 13, and over the following seasons progressed through different age categories before becoming an important member of the U19 team and the reserve side. With Legia U19 he won the Polish championship title in the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, taking part in a period of pronounced domestic dominance by the Warsaw academy. Official data from the Legia Academy show that in 2026 the club won its third consecutive Polish U19 championship and its eighth overall in that age category. The team finished the 2025/26 season with 67 points, eight more than second-placed Górnik Zabrze, with 21 wins, four draws and five defeats. Such continuity of results allowed young players to ensure that their development was not limited only to training, but also included matches played under strong competitive pressure.
For the young goalkeeper, the transition from junior to senior football is particularly important. Legia II earned promotion to the Betclic 2. Liga, the third tier of Polish football, in the 2025/26 season, and Bienduga played a significant role during that campaign. In its announcement about the new contract, the club highlighted a run of nine consecutive matches without conceding a goal, which is an especially valuable indicator of stability for a goalkeeper of his age. Promotion itself was confirmed in May 2026, when the second team secured a place in the higher division several rounds before the end with a 2:0 victory over GKS Wikielec. Although Bienduga was not in goal in the decisive match, his performances during the season were part of the broader process that brought the reserve team back to a higher competitive level.
Entering the Betclic 2. Liga further raises the demands placed on Legia II's young players because the reserve team now regularly faces tougher and more experienced senior opponents. Bienduga has remained an important part of that team in the new season as well. The Legia Academy announced that on 9 August 2026 he played in the 5:0 home victory over Świt Skolwin in the third round, which was Legia II's first league win of the 2026/27 season. The goalkeeper kept a clean sheet, while the club stated that in the opening phase of the match he was not required to make a large number of interventions. For his development, this schedule is significant: training with the first team is combined with regular senior minutes in the reserves, instead of a long period without competitive appearances.
European experience against Fiorentina, PAOK, Ajax and Villarreal
One of the most important parts of Bienduga's career so far was the 2025/26 UEFA Youth League, in which Legia achieved a historically deep run. In the domestic champions path, the Warsaw side first eliminated Fiorentina and then PAOK from Thessaloniki. UEFA states that Legia advanced against Fiorentina 6:4 on aggregate after a 4:1 victory in Warsaw and a 3:2 defeat in Florence. In the next round, it defeated PAOK 2:1 in both matches, or 4:2 on aggregate, thereby securing a place in the knockout phase of the competition at the beginning of 2026. For Bienduga, such matches meant facing opponents from different football schools and pressure exceeding that of standard domestic junior competition.
In the round of 32, Legia defeated Ajax 2:1 in Warsaw on 4 February 2026 and continued its European adventure. This secured a place in the round of 16 and an away match against Villarreal, while the official Legia Academy described the achievement as a historic result for Polish youth club football. The match against Villarreal was played in Spain on 25 February. Legia took the lead through Szymon Chojecki's goal in the 31st minute, but the home side turned the match around in the second half to win 2:1. UEFA data confirm that Bienduga played the entire match, while Legia finished with ten men and conceded the decisive goal in the 88th minute.
Although the European run ended one step before the quarter-finals, the experience of that campaign has broader significance for a goalkeeper who was 17 at the time. The UEFA Youth League places young players in an environment more similar to professional international football: travel, preparation for opponents from other leagues, greater media interest and matches in which mistakes are harder to compensate for. During the competition, Legia highlighted Bienduga in particular as one of the standout individuals in its U19 team. Such European playing time, combined with senior appearances for the second team, helps explain why the club decided as early as the beginning of 2026 to include him in the first team's daily work.
First call-up to the first-team squad came against Zagłębie
The formal transition towards the first team began during the winter preparations. In January, Legia included Bienduga among the goalkeepers who travelled to the training camp, and in June he was once again part of the group for the summer preparations in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The official list of goalkeepers for that camp included Otto Hindrich, Ivan Brkić, Jan Bienduga and Jakub Trojanowski, with Bienduga designated as an academy player. This gave him several weeks of work alongside senior players and the coaching staff, which is particularly important in goalkeeper development because the demands of the position often relate to decision-making, communication and playing under pressure just as much as to saves themselves.
The next step came in the league. Legia defeated Zagłębie Lubin 3:1 at home in the second round of the Ekstraklasa, and Bienduga was included in an official first-team match squad for the first time. The club specifically highlighted this fact in the announcement of his new contract. His debut has not yet followed, however, so his position should be viewed as a transitional phase between the reserve and first teams rather than as a completed entry into the senior hierarchy. This is precisely why regular appearances for Legia II remain crucial: they allow him to maintain continuity of matches while simultaneously adapting to the pace and standards of the first team.
Sporting director Fredi Bobic openly indicated the plan the club has for the young goalkeeper. In an official statement following the signing of the contract, he said that Bienduga's development over the previous six months, under goalkeeper coach Maciej Kowal, had been exceptionally rapid. Bobic added that Legia wants Bienduga to become the first-team goalkeeper in the future and provide competition for the more experienced options in that position. The club therefore signed the new contract before the young player became a regular first-team starter, giving him stability and time to develop. The contract with an option for an additional year simultaneously protects Legia's sporting interests if Bienduga continues to progress at the expected pace.
Bienduga: the goal has been achieved, but the work is only beginning
Bienduga himself stated in the club's announcement that reaching the first team had been his main goal ever since, as an academy player, he began progressing through Legia's system. He said that daily work now allows him to be part of the senior squad, but also that he does not see the new contract as an endpoint. The emphasis of his statement was on further development, training and gaining experience with the reserves. Such a combination of ambition and a realistic competitive pathway is important for goalkeepers, who generally find it more difficult to obtain early senior minutes than players in many other positions. For now, Legia is providing him precisely with a transitional model in which he trains at one level and regularly plays at another.
Bienduga's development is also being monitored through Poland's youth national teams. The Polish Football Association announced in March 2026 that the Legia goalkeeper had been called up to the national team for players born in 2008 for a qualifying tournament connected with the 2027 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He was listed among the Legia Warszawa players, confirming that he is also part of the national development programme. In previous years he had also been involved in younger selections, so his progress is not limited only to club level. Competition among young national-team goalkeepers remains strong, and the call-up itself does not guarantee a place in the starting line-up, but regular involvement in the national-team environment further increases the number of high-quality training sessions and international experiences.
At this moment, the most important question is not when Bienduga will receive the label of Legia's first-choice goalkeeper, but how the club will distribute his minutes during the 2026/27 season. The basic model can already be seen in the opening rounds: he is attached to the first team, enters the senior squad, but continues to play for Legia II. Such an approach reduces the risk of the young goalkeeper being left without matches during a sensitive stage of development. His clean sheet in the victory over Świt just one day before the announcement of the new contract further emphasised how the reserve team continues to be regarded as an important part of his pathway.
Legia secures time for the next stage of development with the contract
For Legia, extending its cooperation with Bienduga is also a statement about the way the club wants to connect the academy, reserve and first teams. The Academy announced that 13 of its former players prepared with the first team for the 2026/27 season, including Bienduga, showing that the transition of young players towards the senior squad is being implemented systematically rather than only through individual cases. For goalkeepers, that transition is particularly sensitive because only one player can start a match in that position, so development often requires careful balancing between training at a higher level and actual playing time in competition.
By his 18th birthday, Bienduga had already combined several developmental stages that rarely occur at the same time: two Polish U19 championship titles, a deep run in the UEFA Youth League, promotion with the reserve team to the third tier, a run of matches without conceding, national-team call-ups and inclusion in the first-team squad. None of these elements by itself guarantees a successful senior career, but together they explain why Legia decided to act before the young goalkeeper had made his Ekstraklasa debut. The club thereby gains long-term control over the player's development, while Bienduga gains a stable environment in which he can continue progressing without the need for an immediate transfer or premature status as first-choice goalkeeper.
The closest objective remains establishing himself in senior football. Legia II has already entered a more demanding division, while the first team has its own competitive ambitions in the Ekstraklasa, so every opportunity for Bienduga will come in a competitive environment. From the club's statements so far, it is clear that this is not merely talk about potential without a timeline: the sporting director explicitly sees him as a future first-team goalkeeper, while the new contract provides enough time for that development to take place gradually. For the 18-year-old who arrived at Legia's academy five years ago, the next stage is no longer a question of entering the senior system. He has already entered it; now he must show whether he can develop from one of the club's most interesting young goalkeepers into a reliable option for the first team.
