Jovo Lukić scores against Brann again, but Universitatea Cluj's European journey ends in Bergen
Bosnia and Herzegovina international Jovo Lukić continued his personal scoring streak in European qualifiers, but his goal was not enough for Universitatea Cluj to advance to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League. The Romanian side lost 3-1 away to Brann in Bergen on 30 July 2026, meaning the Norwegian club progressed 5-3 on aggregate following a 2-2 draw in the first leg. According to UEFA's official match report, Niklas Castro scored twice for the hosts, in the 8th and 75th minutes, while Ulrik Mathisen found the net near the end of the first half. Lukić temporarily equalised at 1-1 in the 26th minute, reacting after goalkeeper Mathias Lønne Dyngeland parried a powerful shot from Mariusz Ștefănescu. It was the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker's second goal of the tie, as he had also scored in the first match, when Universitatea recovered from a two-goal deficit in the closing stages.
The defeat in Bergen brought the European campaign of Cristiano Bergodi's team to an end, but once again confirmed just how important Lukić is to its attacking play. The striker started the match in Norway, unlike in the first encounter, when he came off the bench, and once again found space inside the penalty area at the moment when his team needed a response. After Brann's early goal, Universitatea managed to restore balance and briefly reset the tie, but the hosts took advantage of crucial mistakes and their quality in front of goal. The final score therefore reflects not only the difference in finishing, but also the Norwegian team's ability to punish lost possession and uncertain reactions in the opposition defence. The club from Cluj-Napoca was left with the impression that it had been competitive for much of the tie, but had failed to retain control for long enough during the most important periods of the matches.
Castro opened the scoring early, Lukić quickly responded
Brann imposed a high tempo from the start at its home stadium and took the lead as early as the eighth minute. According to Universitatea Cluj's report, Denzel De Roeve joined the attack down the right and delivered an accurate ball towards the six-yard box, where Castro reacted impressively with a backheel and beat goalkeeper Neofytos Michael. The goal allowed the hosts to play with a lead and placed additional pressure on the visitors, who knew after the draw in the first match that they needed at least one goal to advance. Universitatea, however, neither retreated nor fell apart after the early setback. The Romanian side accepted periods without possession and tried to break forward through quick transitions, relying on Lukić's movement and the runs of Issouf Macalou and Ștefănescu.
That approach produced the equaliser in the 26th minute. Macalou beat his marker on the left and played in Ștefănescu, who moved into open space and fired powerfully towards the home goal. Dyngeland stopped the initial shot but pushed the ball into an area where Lukić reacted faster than the Brann defence and sent it into the unguarded net. It was a typical striker's reaction from a player who follows the move until the end and anticipates the possibility of a rebound. The goal briefly changed the atmosphere inside the stadium and opened up the contest, as the aggregate score was level again at that moment, 3-3.
After making it 1-1, Universitatea produced several promising moves towards the opposition penalty area. The club report states that Macalou twice attempted to finish quick attacks, while Brann continued to look for space through the wide areas and combinations in midfield at the other end. The visitors appeared more dangerous than in the opening minutes, but they failed to capitalise on the period in which the home defence was under greater pressure. This was where one of the key differences in the tie became apparent: even when Brann was not in complete control of the game, it retained enough composure to wait for another opportunity. It arrived just before half-time.
Mathisen's goal changed the direction of the second leg
In the 45th minute, Mathisen restored Brann's lead and dealt the visitors a heavy blow before the end of the first half. According to the report by the Cluj-Napoca club, the home attacker took advantage of an uncertain charge from goalkeeper Michael and scored to make it 2-1. That moment was particularly important because Universitatea had regained belief in qualification after equalising, only to find itself chasing the result again near the end of the half. Brann went into the break with a 4-3 aggregate lead, allowing it to take a more patient approach after the interval. Bergodi's team could no longer hope to force extra time without another goal and instead had to search for an equaliser more openly.
The visitors' coach reacted at the beginning of the second half by introducing the experienced Dan Nistor in place of Ștefănescu. Universitatea created its first major opportunity after the restart through Lukić in the 54th minute, when Nistor found him with a pass in behind. The Bosnia and Herzegovina striker moved towards goal, but Brann captain Fredrik Pallesen Knudsen stopped him with a last-ditch intervention before he could take the final shot. Had that move ended in a goal, the second leg would have been completely open again and the pressure would have shifted onto the home side. Instead, Brann survived the visitors' most dangerous spell and gradually regained the initiative.
The Norwegian team did not recklessly chase a third goal after that, but instead used possession to keep Universitatea away from its own goal. The visitors attempted to remain compact enough and wait for space to launch another transition, but the need to take greater risks increased as time passed. In the 68th minute, Bergodi introduced Oucasse Mendy in place of Dino Mikanović, while Jug Stanojev moved to the right-back position. The change was intended to bring additional pace and directness to the attack, but a lost ball during one such move preceded the goal that effectively decided the tie. Brann once again demonstrated how dangerous it could be after winning possession and quickly attacking an unsettled defence.
Castro's second goal confirmed Brann's progression
In the 75th minute, Castro scored his second goal of the match and completed the final 3-1 scoreline. After winning the ball, the hosts quickly moved play towards the opposition half, and the Chilean attacker finished the move with a long-range shot into the near corner. According to UEFA's data, Castro added the two goals in Bergen to his goal from the first match, becoming the most influential scorer across the entire tie. His ability to appear in different attacking areas caused problems for the Universitatea defence: he scored his first goal from close range and the second with an accurate strike from outside the penalty area. Brann thereby moved 5-3 ahead on aggregate and gained a comfortable cushion for the final fifteen minutes.
Lukić left the pitch shortly after the third goal and was replaced by Alibek Aliev. Universitatea tried to recreate the kind of late pressure it had produced in the first match, when it recovered from a 2-0 deficit in the closing stages, but Brann did not allow another comeback this time. The home side established clearer defensive lines, closed the space in front of the penalty area and controlled the tempo in the final phase. The visitors were left without enough time or precision to score the two goals that would have taken them into extra time. The final whistle from Croatian referee Mateo Erceg confirmed the Norwegian club's progression to the next stage of the qualifiers.
For Brann, the victory confirmed its effective management of the tie following the disappointing conclusion to the first match. The Norwegians had led 2-0 in Sfântu Gheorghe until the 85th minute, but goals from Lukić and Pedro Pinho in quick succession brought Universitatea back onto level terms. In the second leg, they again took an early lead and, after the visitors equalised, responded near the end of the first half before closing out the match with a third goal. That sequence shows that Brann learned from the first encounter and avoided a late loss of concentration in Bergen. Universitatea, on the other hand, showed character for the second time in the tie after conceding a goal, but was unable to repeat its late recovery.
Lukić's two goals defined the tie
Although Universitatea was eliminated, Lukić finished the tie as its most important scorer. In the first match on 23 July, he came on in the 61st minute following his return from the World Cup and the subsequent rest period, and headed in a cross from Ștefănescu in the 85th minute to reduce the deficit. Two minutes later, Pedro Pinho scored to make it 2-2, while Ștefănescu struck the crossbar in stoppage time and came close to completing the turnaround. In Bergen, Lukić was named in the starting line-up and scored again, this time from a rebound. Two goals in two different roles, as a substitute and as a starter, further confirmed his ability to make a quick impact on a match.
For the 27-year-old striker, the European goals continued a period in which he has made significant progress at both club and international level. Universitatea Cluj announced in April 2026 that it had extended his contract until 2029, following a season in which he was the leading scorer in the Romanian SuperLiga. According to the club's figures, he finished the 2025/26 league campaign with 18 goals and scored 20 in all competitions. The club also highlighted that before arriving in Romania, he had been a two-time Bosnia and Herzegovina champion with Borac Banja Luka. Those statistics explain why Universitatea has built much of its attacking structure around his presence inside the penalty area.
Lukić also gained an important role with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team during the summer of 2026. The Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced that he scored his first senior international goal in the World Cup match against Canada, heading his team into the lead in a game that finished 1-1. After the match, he said that he could hardly have imagined a more beautiful setting for his first international goal, although he would gladly have traded his personal achievement for a team victory. Universitatea described the goal as historic because Lukić became the first player from the club to score at a World Cup. His return from international duty therefore represented a transition from the world's biggest international competition directly into the early stages of his club's European qualifying campaign.
Universitatea's European journey ended after four closely contested matches
Universitatea Cluj entered the 2026/27 season through the Europa League qualifiers, having finished second in the Romanian championship in the previous campaign. The club thereby qualified for the Europa League for the first time in its history and, according to its own information, secured a second consecutive season in European competition. Both matches against Dynamo Kyiv in the first qualifying round ended goalless. Qualification was decided by a penalty shootout in the second leg in Cluj-Napoca, where the Ukrainian side prevailed 4-2. Following that defeat, Universitatea continued its European campaign in the Conference League and was drawn against Brann as its next opponent.
The overall picture from the four European matches shows that the Romanian team was difficult to break down against Dynamo, but entered a significantly more open type of contest against Brann. After two goalless Europa League matches, the encounters with the Norwegian representative produced eight goals in total. Universitatea managed to score in both matches against Brann, but also conceded five goals, including three in the second leg. Particular attention will be paid to the goals conceded immediately before the end of the first half and following a turnover during a phase when the team was searching for an equaliser. In qualifying ties with such little room for error, precisely these details often decide an entire European season.
Elimination does not erase the fact that Universitatea played competitive periods against two experienced European opponents within a short space of time. It did not concede a goal in 210 minutes against Dynamo, while against Brann it showed an attacking response in both the first and second matches. Nevertheless, the club still faces the task of turning competitiveness into results, particularly during periods when the opponent loses control or an opportunity for a comeback emerges. Lukić's goals were the clearest positive feature of the tie, but the team did not find enough other solutions in the final third. Its European experience now carries over into domestic competition, where Bergodi will have to manage the physical and mental consequences of an intense July schedule.
Universitatea returns to domestic duties, with Lukić remaining the central figure in attack
Following the defeat in Norway, Universitatea Cluj turns its attention to the Romanian SuperLiga, where the previous season established high expectations. The club finished as runner-up, achieved its best league season of the modern era and secured a place in Europe, meaning elimination by Brann will also be assessed through the team's ability to maintain continuity on the domestic stage. According to the schedule published by the club, its next match was due to be played against FC Botoșani at Sepsi Arena in Sfântu Gheorghe. The coaching staff's priority will be the players' recovery following the trip to Bergen and a series of matches played within short intervals. At the same time, it will need to preserve the attacking efficiency of Lukić, who continued scoring in European matches even after his international commitments.
For the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, the tie against Brann ended without the team's objective being achieved, but with another confirmation of his form. He scored two of Universitatea's three goals in the tie, both of them arriving while his team was behind. That ability to respond under pressure is especially valuable in qualifying matches, where the tempo and psychological complexion of a game can change with a single action. His goal in Bergen brought the visitors back into contention, but Brann responded with greater quality and took advantage of its opportunities. Universitatea's European campaign therefore came to an end, while Lukić leaves the qualifiers with his status strengthened as the striker around whom the club can build the remainder of its season.
