Majchrzak beats Medvedev to reach the first ATP final of his career

Kamil Majchrzak achieved one of the biggest victories of his career on grass in the Netherlands. The Polish tennis player defeated Daniil Medvedev 7:6(4), 6:1 on Saturday, June 13, in the semifinal of the ATP Libéma Open tournament in Rosmalen, within the tournament setting of 's-Hertogenbosch, thereby securing his first final on the ATP Tour. According to data from the ATP statistics center, the match lasted one hour and 28 minutes, and the decisive moment came after a tight first set, in which Majchrzak was calmer in the tie-break. After winning the first set, he completely took control of the match and closed out the second part with a convincing 6:1. The victory is especially significant because it was achieved against the tournament's third seed and a former world number one.

A tight first set opened the way to a big victory

The duel had a long, even rhythm in the first set, without a clear separation and with little room for error. Majchrzak had to withstand the pressure of Medvedev's baseline game, but he did not allow the match to turn in favor of the favorite. According to the Tennis Majors report, the Polish tennis player won the first-set tie-break 7:4, creating a psychological advantage that proved decisive later on. After losing the closing stage of the set, Medvedev found it increasingly difficult to find continuity, while Majchrzak entered the rallies more aggressively and made better use of shorter balls. In the second set, the Polish player dropped only one game and finished the job without a third set, which gave the victory additional weight.

The statistical flow of the match shows how important the first set was for the balance of power on the court. Medvedev is usually dangerous when his serve allows him short points and when he can control the rhythm of rallies, but Majchrzak managed in Rosmalen to maintain balance precisely in the phases in which the Russian tennis player is usually most uncomfortable. The score display on the Tennis Tonic portal shows that after 6:6 in the first set, the better finish by the Polish player in the tie-break proved decisive. The second set then did not have the same uncertainty because Majchrzak quickly gained an advantage and maintained it until the end. Medvedev found no answer to the combination of a stable serve, deeper returns and faster taking of the initiative in rallies.

A second victory over a top player in the same week

Majchrzak's victory over Medvedev was not an isolated flash, but a continuation of an exceptionally successful week on Dutch grass. Tennis Majors states that the Pole defeated top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6:4, 6:3 in the quarterfinals the previous day, which meant that in two days he had beaten two players from the very top of the draw. Such a run is especially important for a player who, before this tournament, had not had an ATP final in his career and who arrived in 's-Hertogenbosch outside the circle of the main title favorites. On his way to the final stage, he had previously passed Finland's Otto Virtanen 6:7(7), 6:4, 7:6(4) in the first round, and then in the second round he was very convincing against Australia's James McCabe, whom he defeated 6:0, 6:3. In this way he gradually built his form, and the biggest victories came in the final stage of the tournament.

This outcome further changes the impression of Majchrzak's performance because the start of the tournament was marked by a fight for survival. Against Virtanen, he had to turn the match around after losing the first set and play a deciding tie-break in the third set, which on grass is always a high-risk scenario. After that, he showed against McCabe that he could impose the tempo from the very beginning, and against Auger-Aliassime and Medvedev he confirmed that the victories were not the result of a favorable draw. According to the ATP tournament guide, Auger-Aliassime was the first seed, Medvedev the third, and Alex de Minaur the second seed of the tournament. Majchrzak therefore had to pass through the toughest part of the draw on his way to the final while retaining enough freshness for the final weekend.

Medvedev left without an answer after a demanding path to the semifinal

Daniil Medvedev entered the semifinal after a demanding path and two matches that required great physical and mental effort. Tennis Majors reported that in the second round he defeated Dutch teenager Thijs Boogaard 6:3, 4:6, 7:6(6), while the official Libéma Open website stated that in the quarterfinals against Marin Čilić he won 6:2, 3:6, 6:1. That quarterfinal match, according to the tournament announcement, was a duel between two US Open champions and was played over two days, which additionally affected the rhythm of Medvedev's week. In the semifinal against Majchrzak, he did not manage to maintain the level needed for a comeback after losing the tie-break. Particularly problematic was the second set, in which the third seed lost control of his service games and was left without his usual defensive solidity.

Medvedev carried additional weight of expectation in Rosmalen because, as one of the main seeds, he entered the part of the season in which players must quickly adapt from Parisian clay to grass. The ATP highlights in his official profile that he spent 16 weeks as world number one and that in 2021 he won the US Open by defeating Novak Đoković in the final. Because of such a résumé, every defeat by a lower-ranked opponent gains additional weight, although grass often creates conditions in which ranking differences do not have to be decisive. Majchrzak took advantage of exactly that: he shortened the time for Medvedev's defensive organization and forced him into more risky solutions. Once the first set went to the Polish player, Medvedev was no longer able to regain control of the match.

Final against De Minaur and a major opportunity at an ATP 250 tournament

Majchrzak will play for the title against Alex de Minaur, the second seed and one of the fastest players on the ATP Tour. ESPN's results overview for the tournament states that De Minaur defeated Adrian Mannarino 6:4, 6:0 in the other semifinal, while Tennis Majors highlights that the Australian won ten consecutive games in the closing stage of that match. This means the final brings a clash of players who finished their semifinals in two sets and arrive at the final stage with strong results momentum. For Majchrzak, the stake is clear: a first title on the ATP Tour and confirmation of a week that already represents the biggest breakthrough of his career at this level. For De Minaur, who according to the ATP tournament guide already won this tournament in 2024, the final is an opportunity to return to a place of earlier success.

The tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch has a specific position in the calendar because it is played immediately after the main part of the clay season and at the beginning of the grass period. The ATP announced that the 2026 edition is taking place from June 8 to 14 at Autotron Rosmalen, and the singles final is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. Although it is an ATP 250 category tournament, its value for players often exceeds only points and prize money because it offers an early test of form on a surface that requires shorter swings, quick reaction and different movement. According to ATP data, the tournament winner earns 250 points and 110,055 euros, while the finalist receives 165 points and 64,195 euros. By reaching the final, Majchrzak has already secured an important ranking boost, but a title would completely change his status ahead of the continuation of the grass season.

Rosmalen as a stage for surprises on grass

The Libéma Open is played in Rosmalen, in a tournament environment traditionally associated with 's-Hertogenbosch, and is one of the early European tests on grass. In its tournament preview, the ATP states that this is the 35th edition of the competition, founded in 1990, with a break in the period from 2020 to 2021. The history of the tournament shows that grass in the Netherlands can open space for players who quickly adapt to the low bounce and short points, regardless of seeded status. ATP media materials note that the record for the number of singles titles is shared by Nicolas Mahut and Patrick Rafter with three trophies each, while Richard Krajicek is the player with the most victories at the tournament. Such context further emphasizes that success in Rosmalen often belongs to players who, over one week, best combine serve, forward movement and concentration in tie-breaks.

Majchrzak's performance fits precisely into such a pattern. In the first round he survived a deciding-set tie-break, in the semifinal he won the tie-break against Medvedev, and in the meantime, against McCabe and Auger-Aliassime, he showed that he can win even without long closing stages. This combination of resilience and efficiency is especially important on grass, where one weak service game often decides an entire set. His game in Rosmalen did not rely only on defense, but on timely taking of the initiative and on the ability to play more directly immediately after pressure. That was visible in the semifinal after the first set: instead of caution after winning the tie-break, Majchrzak raised the intensity further. In such a rhythm, Medvedev found himself in the role of a player reacting, not a player dictating the match.

A comeback story with a new peak

Majchrzak's first ATP final also has a broader personal context. The International Tennis Integrity Agency, ITIA, announced in 2023 that the Polish tennis player had accepted a 13-month suspension under the rules of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, with the agency stating that it accepted that the player had not knowingly or intentionally ingested prohibited substances and that the case was connected with a contaminated dietary supplement. ITIA then announced that the period of provisional suspension would be credited to his sanction and that the period of ineligibility would end on December 29, 2023. After returning to professional tennis, Majchrzak had to rebuild his ranking, schedule and status on the Tour. Reaching the final in Rosmalen is therefore not only the result of one good week, but also confirmation of a return to a level at which he can beat seeds and top players.

It is important, however, to separate the sporting result from the administrative history of the case. At this moment, Majchrzak is competing regularly on the ATP Tour, and his victory over Medvedev is recorded as the strongest result of the week in the men's part of the Libéma Open. According to Tennis Majors, at the time of the victory he was the world number 76, while Medvedev was eighth. Such a ranking difference further highlights the scale of the surprise, but it does not explain the entire match. On court, what proved decisive was that Majchrzak was more precise in key points and mentally more stable in the second set. The final against De Minaur will show whether he can maintain such a level for one more day, against an opponent who on grass relies on speed, court coverage and constant pressure on the opponent's serve.

What the victory means for the rest of the season

For Majchrzak, this victory comes at a moment when every big win can have a multiple effect. Points from the final of an ATP 250 tournament bring concrete benefit in the rankings, but equally important is confirmation that he can beat players who are used to playing the final stages of the biggest tournaments. In a week in which he defeated Auger-Aliassime and Medvedev, the Polish player passed two different kinds of tests: against the first, he had to control a strong serve and aggressive moves into the court, and against the second, he had to remain patient in rallies and ready to finish the point when space opened. He passed both tests in two sets. This is a signal that his form in Rosmalen is not accidental, but the result of a game that has adapted well to the grass surface.

For Medvedev, the defeat means a missed opportunity for another final in a week in which he was among the main candidates for the title. Still, considering the demanding schedule and previous matches, his performance in Rosmalen remains an important part of preparation for the rest of the grass season. For the tournament, meanwhile, Majchrzak's progress to the final brings a story that goes beyond the standard order of seeds. On June 14, the Libéma Open will get a final duel between a player seeking his first ATP title and an opponent returning to a court on which he already knew how to win. After the semifinal, only one thing is clear: Majchrzak used his opportunity against Medvedev without hesitation and earned the biggest match of his ATP career so far.
