Marco Bezzecchi in hospital after a heavy crash at Assen; Jorge Martín takes the lead in the MotoGP standings
Marco Bezzecchi was transported to the University Medical Center Groningen after a heavy crash at the Dutch Grand Prix, held on June 28, 2026, at the TT Circuit Assen. The Italian Aprilia rider went off in the early phase of the race, at the fast Turn 15 Ramshoek, while he was in the leading group and trying to remain in the fight for the top positions. According to MotoGP's official report, Bezzecchi lost the front end of the motorcycle on the second lap, while riding behind Marc Márquez, after which he ended up off the track at high speed. The crash immediately caused concern because it happened on one of the fastest parts of the Assen circuit, but the first information from the medical center was encouraging. Aprilia confirmed that the rider was conscious, that he was moving all his limbs normally, and that initial examinations showed no immediate signs of serious neurological or systemic complications.
Despite those first findings, the medical team decided to transfer Bezzecchi to Groningen for additional diagnostics. According to Aprilia's statement reported by specialized motorsport media, the reason for the transfer was severe pain after the strong impact and the need for detailed scans to rule out possible hidden injuries. At the time the available information was published, there was no official confirmation of serious injuries, but the team announced new information after the completion of the hospital examinations. Such caution in MotoGP is not unusual, especially after high-speed crashes, because some injuries can be reliably assessed only after specialist evaluation. Bezzecchi's crash also had a major sporting effect, as he was left without points in a race in which he was defending the lead in the overall standings.
The crash at Ramshoek decided the race already at the beginning
Bezzecchi started at Assen from the front row, in third position, after a weekend in which Aprilia showed exceptionally strong pace. According to MotoGP's report, Jorge Martín from pole position did not immediately retain the lead through the first corner, because Ai Ogura started very well from the middle of the front row, but Martín quickly responded and returned to the head of the race. Behind him, Ogura, Raúl Fernández, Marc Márquez and Bezzecchi settled in during the early phase, while the Italian rider was trying to recover what he had lost after a somewhat weaker opening. On the second lap the battle intensified further, and Bezzecchi, according to the official race description, lost the front end of the motorcycle at Turn 15 while following Márquez. The excursion was violent, and the race was over for him almost before the real fight for victory had developed.
Ramshoek is one of the fastest and most demanding corners at the TT Circuit Assen, a track that has been known for decades for its flowing rhythm, fast changes of direction and small number of very slow braking zones. The official track data state that the current configuration measures 4.542 meters, and Assen is often called the Cathedral of Speed in the motorcycle world. Precisely because of that profile, mistakes in the fast part of the lap rarely leave the rider much time to react. After the crash, Bezzecchi ended up in the run-off area, and the medical services quickly transferred him to the circuit medical center. According to the available information, there was no need for an urgent statement about a life-threatening condition, but the seriousness of the impact required additional examinations.
For Bezzecchi, the crash was especially painful from a sporting point of view as well. He arrived at Assen as the championship leader, but with a run of results that had already raised the question of stability in the closing part of the first half of the season. The specialized portal Crash.net stated that this was his third consecutive Sunday appearance without points, after retirement in Hungary and a missed race in Brno due to suspension. In such circumstances, Assen was supposed to be an opportunity to respond, especially because Bezzecchi had already been fastest in practice on Friday, and Aprilia had established itself over the weekend as the most competitive package. Instead, the race ended with another major loss in the title fight. The consequences of that moment became clear already by the end of the race, when his teammate Jorge Martín finished on the podium and took over the lead in the overall standings.
Aprilia: first findings without serious neurological complications
The most important information after the crash concerned the rider's health condition. Aprilia announced that Bezzecchi was transported immediately after the accident to the circuit medical center, where he was examined by the medical team, including MotoGP medical director Dr. Ángel Charte. According to the team statement reported by Crash.net, the initial clinical examinations confirmed that Bezzecchi was fully conscious and had normal mobility in all four limbs. The same statement said that there were no immediate signs of major neurological or systemic complications. Such findings represent an important first assessment after a crash, but they do not automatically mean that all possible consequences have been ruled out.
Because of the severe pain related to the impact, the doctors decided to take an additional step and send the rider for specialist scans at Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. According to Aprilia, the goal of the transfer was to carry out comprehensive diagnostics and specialized examinations in order to definitively rule out hidden injuries and ensure a safe recovery. Italpress, citing a statement by Franco Perone, chief medical officer of Lifenet, Aprilia's medical partner, reported that Bezzecchi had severe pain in his chest, legs and ankle, that he was moving all his limbs and that he was talking with his father. Such information further indicates that the trip to the hospital was preventive, but necessary because of the severity of the crash. The final assessment of possible consequences will depend on the hospital findings, which the team had not officially published by then.
In MotoGP, the medical protocol after heavy crashes carries special weight because riders often try to continue competing as soon as possible, while teams at the same time must assess the longer-term risk. Bezzecchi is in the title fight, and every missed race or limited physical fitness can have a direct effect on the championship. The next race on the calendar, the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, comes after a free weekend, according to MotoGP's official report. That gap may be important for recovery, but it is currently unclear whether the hospital findings will require additional therapy, rest or a change to the sporting plan. All decisions about returning to the motorcycle will depend on the medical assessment, and not only on the situation in the standings.
Ogura took the opportunity and gave Japan its first victory since 2004
While Bezzecchi's crash marked the dramatic beginning of the race, the sporting story of Assen ended with a historic victory for Ai Ogura. According to MotoGP's official report, the Japanese rider of the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team achieved his first victory in the premier class, becoming the first Japanese rider on the highest step of a MotoGP podium since Makoto Tamada in 2004. During the race, Ogura had to recover lost positions after the early battles, and then he returned toward the leaders with a strong pace in the second half of the race. At one point he also had a problem with the ride-height device, but he managed to solve it and continue putting pressure on the leading pair. He made the decisive attack in the final part of the race, when he passed teammate Raúl Fernández and soon opened a gap.
Fernández finished second and thus completed an extraordinary weekend for Trackhouse, after the same team had achieved a one-two victory in Saturday's sprint with Fernández ahead of Ogura. Jorge Martín finished third and thereby completed an all-Aprilia podium in Sunday's race: Ogura and Fernández on satellite motorcycles, and Martín on the factory Aprilia. According to the official MotoGP report, the weekend at Assen showed the speed and authority of the Aprilia package, although Bezzecchi's crash remained a major negative point for the factory team. Such an outcome emphasized the breadth of Aprilia's competitiveness, but also the internal dynamic in which a satellite team can directly influence the factory riders' fight for the title. For Ogura, victory at Assen was a result that, according to MotoGP, brought him to within 25 points of the top of the championship.
Behind the winning trio, a separate battle was taking place that further changed the final order. Fabio Di Giannantonio finished fourth after aggressive duels with Márquez and Alex Márquez, and MotoGP's official report states that he also served a long-lap penalty for an incident in the final chicane, after which he returned to the fight. Alex Márquez finished fifth, while Enea Bastianini was promoted to sixth place after Marc Márquez was penalized for exceeding track limits on the final lap. Marc Márquez was thus classified seventh, ahead of Fabio Quartararo, Brad Binder and Alex Rins. The race was also not finished by Pedro Acosta, who according to MotoGP retired because of serious discomfort in his right hand, nor by Francesco Bagnaia, who went into the pits after a technical problem on the Ducati.
Martín on top, Bezzecchi seven points behind
The biggest change in the overall standings happened precisely because of the combination of Bezzecchi's retirement and Martín's third place. According to data published by Italpress, Jorge Martín has 193 points after Assen, while Marco Bezzecchi remained on 186 and now trails by seven points. Fabio Di Giannantonio is on 177 points, Ai Ogura on 168, and Marc Márquez on 153. Such standings show that the title fight has not been reduced only to the pair of Aprilia factory riders, but that a wider group of candidates has come closer thanks to Bezzecchi's new results drought. In a system in which the sprint and Sunday's race of each Grand Prix round together offer a large number of points, several consecutive weekends without a real effect can quickly change the picture of the season.
Martín's rise to first place has additional weight because he is a rider who, according to Aprilia's presentation of the team for 2026, entered the season with the goal of opening a new chapter after a 2025 marked by injuries. Bezzecchi, on the other hand, entered his second season with Aprilia in the same factory structure after an exceptionally strong 2025 and with the ambition of confirming himself among the main title candidates. Assen showed how quickly the balance within one team can change: one rider ended up in hospital and without points, the other took the championship lead with third place. That does not mean Bezzecchi's title fight is lost, but it increases the pressure on every next appearance. His deficit is small, but the run without points means that the margin for new mistakes has been significantly reduced.
In the constructors' standings, according to Italpress, Aprilia has 304 points after Assen, ahead of Ducati with 282, KTM with 175, Honda with 100 and Yamaha with 59 points. That data further confirms that the Dutch weekend was technically very strong for Aprilia, regardless of Bezzecchi's crash. The complete podium in Sunday's race and Trackhouse's one-two victory in the sprint show that the RS-GP works with different riding styles and in different tactical scenarios. Still, in the riders' standings individual points decide, and there Bezzecchi lost the most at Assen. The next official information from the hospital in Groningen will therefore not be important only for his health status, but also for the further course of one of the most tense MotoGP seasons of recent years.
