AC Milan - Venezia: an early test of ambition at San Siro
AC Milan and Venezia meet in the 2nd round of Serie A 2026/2027 at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan. For the home side, this is the first league match of the season in front of its own supporters, while Venezia returns to the stadium where, in its most recent league visit against Milan, in September 2024, it lost 4-0. This meeting, however, comes at a different moment: Milan spent the summer under new coach Rúben Amorim, while Venezia returned to Serie A after finishing first in Serie B under Giovanni Stroppa.
The match comes very early in the season, so before the opening round there is still no useful league table. Milan visits Torino before facing Venezia, while Venezia hosts Lecce. Those results will provide the first points context for San Siro. Even now, however, the direction of both teams' play can be seen: Milan is trying to develop aggressive pressing and quick transitions, while Stroppa wants to preserve the organisation and identity from the promotion season.
Tickets for this match are in demand among supporters, especially because it is Milan's first home league appearance of the new season.
Milan enters a new era with Rúben Amorim
AC Milan entrusted the team to Rúben Amorim in June. At his presentation, the club emphasised football with high pressing, quick transitions and a desire to dominate through possession. Elements of that approach were already visible during pre-season, but so were the problems of a team changing its playing structure.
The best signal came in the final pre-season match, when Milan beat Manchester United 4-2 in Wrocław. The Rossoneri fell behind twice but responded with goals from Samuel Chukwueze, Alphadja Cissé, Gonçalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. In addition to scoring, Chukwueze was involved in creating two more goals, while Milan's report highlighted the high pressing, width and more purposeful possession.
That result came after a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in Jakarta. Before that, Milan drew with Celtic and Inter, so pre-season was not a sequence of victories. The match against Venezia will therefore also be a test of how successfully Amorim has transferred his ideas into a competitive rhythm.
Milan has several players who can decide the match:
- Gonçalo Ramos provides depth and finishing in the penalty area, and against Manchester United he scored his first goal for Milan.
- Rafael Leão remains the most dangerous when he gets space to accelerate down the left side.
- Christian Pulisic can play between the lines or start from the flank, and he scored against Venezia in both matches of the 2024/2025 season.
- Luka Modrić and Ardon Jashari offer control of the tempo, the final pass and energy in midfield.
- Mike Maignan is also important for the first phase of build-up under pressure.
What to expect from Milan's structure
Throughout his career, Amorim has often built teams with three players in the last line and very active wide players, and Milan used a similar base during pre-season. Against Venezia, the key could be how high the home side manages to pin the visitors after losing the ball.
If Venezia comes out with two strikers, Milan will have to switch sides quickly and look for players between the midfield and defensive lines. If the home side forces the visitors to drop deep, the number of players around the penalty area, the accuracy of crosses and off-the-ball movement will become more important.
Against Manchester United, Ramos recorded an assist for Loftus-Cheek in addition to his goal, while Chukwueze created overloads on the right side. Venezia will have to close those channels without narrowing excessively toward the centre, because that would give Milan space for switches of play and crosses.
Venezia arrives as Serie B champion, not as a team without an identity
Venezia earned its return to Serie A under Giovanni Stroppa, who extended his contract after promotion. Ahead of the new season, the club emphasised continuity of the project, while Stroppa wants to preserve the playing idea from Serie B with greater balance against stronger opponents.
The final competitive test before the league was the cup match against Modena. Venezia won 3-2, and Akor Adams scored two goals. After the match, Stroppa admitted that the team lost compactness during part of the first half and became too stretched, but he praised the reaction after the break. Against Milan, such gaps between the lines could be costly.
In the final pre-season match, Venezia drew 2-2 away at Brest. Gianluca Busio scored from a free kick, while Toma Bašić scored after arriving from a deeper position. Stroppa's team played with Rrahmani and Adams together in attack, which provides a possible clue to the formation at San Siro.
Players to watch at Venezia
Gianluca Busio is important for playing through Milan's initial press. If he receives the ball facing forward, Venezia can quickly connect midfield with the forwards. Albion Rrahmani arrived from Sparta Prague after 83 appearances and 26 goals for the Czech club in all competitions. Akor Adams showed his finishing against Modena with two goals and can be dangerous if Milan leaves space behind its wide players.
On 19 August, Venezia strengthened the competition in goal with the arrival of Lorenzo Montipò from Hellas Verona. When announcing the transfer, the club stated that he has 216 Serie A appearances. That does not mean he will automatically start in Milan, because Filip Stanković was the starter in the final pre-season matches and against Modena, but Stroppa now has a more experienced option.
Fitness status and player availability
For a match being played eight days after the time of writing, it is too early to claim a final list of absentees. Both clubs play their opening league match before then.
For Milan, Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot returned to team training on 16 August. Rafael Leão missed the pre-season match against Manchester United after a muscular issue, while reports from Milan expected him to return to group training during the week before Torino. Matteo Gabbia and Christian Pulisic were also among the players whose status was being monitored. There is still no final confirmed list of unavailable players for Milan - Venezia.
For Venezia, the squad list for the cup match against Modena is a useful reference point. It contained 27 players, including Busio, Bašić, Rrahmani, Adams, John Yeboah, Armel Bella-Kotchap and Filip Stanković. Andrea Adorante and Marin Šverko were not on that list, so their status should be checked again after the opening league round.
Head-to-head meetings give Milan a clear advantage
The last four league meetings between these clubs ended in Milan victories:
- Milan - Venezia 4-0, Serie A 2024/2025.
- Venezia - Milan 0-2, Serie A 2024/2025.
- Venezia - Milan 0-3, Serie A 2021/2022.
- Milan - Venezia 2-0, Serie A 2021/2022.
In the two meetings of the 2024/2025 season, Milan did not concede a goal. At San Siro, Theo Hernández scored in the second minute, and by the 29th minute it was 4-0. In the return match in Venice, Christian Pulisic scored in the fifth minute, while Santiago Gimenez made it 2-0 in stoppage time.
For Venezia, one of the first tasks is therefore to survive Milan's early pressure. Early lost duels and poor attempts to play through the press can very quickly raise the tempo of the home side and the stands.
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and getting to the match
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza is located at Piazzale Angelo Moratti in the western part of Milan and is also known as San Siro. Its current capacity is 75,817. The stands are organised into three tiers and four main sector colours. For Milan home matches, the core home-support section is in Secondo Anello Blu, while away supporters are allocated Terzo Anello Verde.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly for attractive evening kick-offs, so it is worth securing tickets in good time.
Public transport is more practical than driving directly to the stadium:
- Metro line M5 goes directly to San Siro Stadio station.
- Tram 16 and bus 49 also serve the stadium, with possible changes on matchdays.
- On matchdays, there is a shuttle between the Lampugnano car park and the stadium.
- Parking areas around San Siro for Milan home matches are organised with special permits.
- At the entrance, it is necessary to have a ticket and a valid identification document; the ticket can also be displayed on a smartphone.
From Milano Centrale, a practical combination is the M2 line to Garibaldi FS and then the M5 to San Siro Stadio. From Porta Garibaldi, the M5 goes directly toward the stadium. If arriving by car, it is more sensible to park farther away from the immediate stadium area and continue by metro.
The exact opening time of the entrances for this match has not yet been published in the available information, so it should not be guessed. The appropriate entrance is indicated on the ticket. The club also warns that there is no luggage storage at the stadium on matchday.
Milan and the atmosphere around the first home match
San Siro is around six kilometres from central Milan, so a stadium visit can easily be combined with several hours in the city. The simplest option is to travel by metro and head toward the stadium early enough to allow sufficient time for security checks and finding the correct sector.
The atmosphere will have an additional dimension because of Milan's first home league evening under Amorim. Supporters will be interested not only in the result, but also in the first serious look at the new playing model: how high the team presses, how quickly it wins the second ball and how the new and established players fit into the system.
Where the match could be decided
The first important area will be the space behind Milan's wide players. If the home side pushes many players forward, Venezia will try to move the ball quickly toward Rrahmani, Adams or Yeboah. For the visitors, the first pass after winning possession will be crucial; if it is slow or inaccurate, Milan's counter-press can immediately send the attack back toward the penalty area.
The second detail is Busio's space in midfield. If he is constantly forced to receive the ball with his back to goal, Venezia will find it harder to connect the lines. If he can turn and find the forwards, Milan's last line may be exposed to runs toward its own goal.
The third factor is set pieces. Venezia scored in Brest from a direct free kick through Busio, so Milan must avoid unnecessary fouls around the penalty area. On the other hand, the home side has enough height and crossing quality for corners to become a serious threat as well.
And finally, the opening 20 minutes could determine the character of the evening. Venezia knows from the experience of 2024 how quickly a match at San Siro can get out of control. If the visitors remain compact and keep the score level for a long time, Milan will have to play patiently. If the home side finds space between the lines early, the intensity on the pitch and in the stands could rise sharply.
Ticket sales for this match are under way, and visitors should check their sector, entrance and return plan after the end of the match before arriving.
