Benfica vs Aarhus: European play-off under the Estádio da Luz floodlights
Benfica and Aarhus meet in Lisbon in the first leg of the Europa League play-off, with kick-off at Estádio da Luz scheduled for 20 August at 20:00 local time. The return leg follows a week later on the Danish champions' ground. At this stage, there is little room left for corrections: the winner of the tie enters the league phase of the competition, while the loser sees their path to the Europa League come to an end.
Benfica come into the contest after a highly convincing performance in the previous European round. Marco Silva's team beat Hearts 6-1 in Lisbon and then drew 1-1 in Edinburgh to advance 7-2 on aggregate. That outcome allowed the coach to distribute minutes among a larger number of players in the return leg, but at the same time the second half in Scotland showed that the Portuguese side are still not completely stable when they lose control of a match.
Aarhus arrive at a completely different emotional moment. The Danish champions began their European summer in qualifying for the stronger continental competition, but Sabah stopped them after a dramatic two-legged tie. AGF won 2-1 at home thanks to two goals from James Bogere, only to lose 4-0 in the return leg in Azerbaijan and go out 5-2 on aggregate. A few days later, a 2-1 league defeat away to Viborg followed.
For that reason, the match in Lisbon is not merely a battle to continue the European season. For Aarhus, it is an opportunity to quickly end a run of difficult results, while Benfica want to confirm that the 6-1 home win against Hearts was an indication of what Marco Silva wants to see from his team at Estádio da Luz.

Form before the first meeting
Benfica's start to the season has brought plenty of goals, but also several warnings. In their first league appearance against Académico de Viseu, Benfica drew 2-2. Pavlidis opened the scoring after a pass from Prestianni, and the Argentine later scored himself, but the home side were unable to protect two separate leads.
The European picture was more convincing. Against Hearts, Benfica effectively completed a large part of the job in the first leg with a 6-1 victory. In the return leg, Marco Silva changed part of the starting line-up and earned a 1-1 draw, with Dodi Lukebakio equalising just one minute after the Scottish side had taken the lead.
AGF went through the complete opposite scenario at the beginning of August. A 2-1 win against Sabah opened the door to qualification, with 18-year-old James Bogere scoring both goals. In Baku, however, the match turned after the break. Sabah scored four times in the second half, and coach Jakob Poulsen admitted after the match that his team had made too many mistakes.
The reaction in the domestic league did not produce a result. Viborg beat AGF 2-1 on 14 August. Frederik Emmery scored for Aarhus, while Bogere hit the post in the second half and later had another major chance.

The schedule may also play a role. Before facing Aarhus, Benfica have a league trip to Casa Pia on 17 August, only three days before the European match. After Friday's match against Viborg, Aarhus have several additional days to prepare for Lisbon.
Benfica have many ways to attack
The biggest problem for Aarhus will be the number of different threats in Benfica's forward line. Vangelis Pavlidis remains an extremely important finishing point of attacks. Against Académico de Viseu, he scored after excellent movement behind the defence, and he had already shown a good understanding with Prestianni during pre-season.
Gianluca Prestianni can be particularly dangerous when receiving the ball between the full-back and centre-back. Against Académico de Viseu, he created chances and assisted Pavlidis, while his movement from the flank towards the centre opens space for a player attacking the line.
Marco Silva also has several other different profiles at his disposal. Andreas Schjelderup can attack from the left, Dodi Lukebakio provides directness and a shot from distance or from a deeper run, Rafa can accelerate play between the lines, while Jhon Durán offers a physically stronger option in the centre of the attack.
Benfica are therefore not a team Aarhus can defend against simply by shutting down one player. If the Danish defence narrows the space around Pavlidis, the home side can try to create one-on-one situations on the wings. If the defence spreads out, the space between the centre-backs and midfield line becomes attractive for Prestianni, Rafa or other players making runs from deeper positions.
In Marco Silva's matches so far, Benfica have also shown a desire to press high. Against Académico de Viseu, several dangerous situations arose after winning the ball high in the opposition half. That very aspect could be decisive against Aarhus, particularly after the problems the Danish side had when the match against Sabah accelerated in the second half.
Aarhus must find a balance between courage and control
Jakob Poulsen does not have a simple choice. Retreating completely in front of their own penalty area could give Benfica too much time for repeated attacks, but a high defensive line opens space behind the last line for the home side's fast players.
Captain Kristian Arnstad is a central figure in the Danish line-up. Before the trip to Viborg, he had already scored two league goals and two European goals this season. AGF appointed him as the new captain during the summer following Patrick Mortensen's departure, and coach Poulsen particularly highlighted his tactical intelligence and influence on the team.
James Bogere brings a different kind of danger. The young striker scored twice against Sabah in the first leg, while against Viborg he was centimetres away from equalising when he hit the post. His speed could be very important for Aarhus if Benfica lose the ball with a larger number of players ahead of it.
Tobias Bech, Gift Links, Mikael Anderson and Frederik Emmery also offer the possibility of breaking quickly out of defence. Emmery showed against Viborg that he can finish a move from a deeper position, while Bech has experience playing in several positions in the attacking part of the team.
The first phase after winning possession will be particularly important for Aarhus. In Baku, the Danish side began to lose their composure after conceding the first goal, and Sabah completely took control of the tie within just a few minutes. Against Benfica, such a spell could be even more costly.
Three key tactical questions

- Will Benfica manage to isolate Prestianni, Schjelderup or Lukebakio against the Danish wide players?
- Can Bogere attack the space behind Benfica's defence before the home side recover into an organised block?
The result of the first leg will also influence the approach. Aarhus do not have to settle the tie in Lisbon. For the Danish champions, it is far more important to remain close enough on the scoreboard for the return leg to retain real significance.
Absences and team condition
For Benfica, the latest concrete fitness report before the trip to Hearts provided several pieces of information. Fredrik Aursnes had returned to team training after recovering, but was not available for the match in Edinburgh. Joshua Wynder trained individually because of a sprained left knee, while Jaden Umeh was out of training following surgery.
That does not automatically mean the same status will apply against Aarhus. A week passes between the match with Hearts and the meeting at Estádio da Luz, so the final availability of the players will depend on training immediately before the match.
Marco Silva showed in Scotland that he has a broad rotation at his disposal. Samuel Soares was in goal, Tomás Araújo came on after the break, while Rafa and Kamiński received minutes late in the match. Such depth is particularly important because of the league match against Casa Pia between the two European fixtures.
For Aarhus, there is no equally clear public list of absentees for Lisbon. The positive news from the Viborg match was that Tobias Mølgaard and Markus Solbakken started a league match for the first time this season. Before the trip, Poulsen will also have to assess how much the demanding schedule against Sabah and Viborg has affected the players carrying the heaviest workload.
History connected these two clubs long before this play-off
Benfica and AGF Aarhus are not strangers to each other in European football. Their history stretches back more than six decades.
One of their best-known meetings was played in the 1960/61 season. Benfica won 4-1 in Aarhus in the second leg of the quarter-final of the then European Champion Clubs' Cup. The Portuguese club continued through the competition and eventually won the European title.
AGF's historical archive also recalls another meeting with Benfica after the Danish title in 1986. That gives this play-off an interesting historical background: today's generations meet in a completely different football environment, but seeing the clubs' names paired together in Europe is nothing new.
For Aarhus, there is additional symbolism in arriving in Lisbon as the reigning Danish champions. Last season ended with the title, but this summer's European qualifiers have already shown how quickly circumstances can change between domestic success and a two-legged tie in which there is no room for a bad evening.
Estádio da Luz as an important part of the tie
Estádio da Luz is located on Avenida Eusébio da Silva Ferreira in Lisbon. The current stadium opened on 25 October 2003 and has 65,000 covered seats.
The structure of the stands keeps the crowd relatively close to the pitch, while the capacity means Aarhus face a completely different atmosphere from most Danish league matches. Benfica turned their previous European home match against Hearts into a 6-1 victory, so the crowd will expect the home side to try to take control early once again.
For the visiting team, the opening twenty minutes could therefore be particularly important. If Aarhus avoid conceding an early goal and force Benfica into patient build-up play, the pressure from the stands could take on a different character. If the home side take an early lead, the match could open up in a way that suits Benfica's speed going forward.

How to get to the stadium
For visitors coming to Lisbon solely for the match, public transport is the simplest way to reach the stadium area. The Lisbon Metro's Blue Line runs immediately alongside the complex, and Colégio Militar/Luz and Alto dos Moinhos are the two stations the city metro lists as closest to the stadium.
Colégio Militar/Luz is located at the intersection of Avenida do Colégio Militar and Avenida Lusíada. Under its regular schedule, the station operates from 06:30 to 01:00, which is useful for an evening match, although supporters should expect a larger number of passengers after the final whistle.
For those arriving by car, the Colégio Militar car park is located in the Cosme Damião area, opposite Estádio da Luz. Its usual opening hours are listed as 08:00 to 02:00. On days of major events, traffic and access to car parks may be altered, so it is not advisable to plan a car journey without allowing extra time.
- Metro: Blue Line towards Colégio Militar/Luz or Alto dos Moinhos stations.
- Bus: several city routes pass through the Estrada da Luz and Colégio Militar area.
- Car: the Colégio Militar car park is opposite the stadium complex, but congestion should be expected on matchday.
- On foot: after leaving the metro, the stadium area is easily accessible on foot, and before the match it is worth arriving early because of security checks.
The exact opening time of the gates for Benfica-Aarhus was not stated in the verified information available on 15 August. Given the stadium's capacity and the evening kick-off, it is reasonable to arrive in the stadium area sufficiently early, especially if it is your first time having to find the correct entrance and section.
What visitors should know before entering
At Estádio da Luz, all spectators over the age of three must have a ticket and use the seat indicated on it. Security checks are carried out at the entrances, while pyrotechnics, weapons, bringing in alcohol and objects that could endanger safety are prohibited.

Lisbon is a large city with a developed metro network, so accommodation immediately next to Estádio da Luz is not essential. The Blue Line connects the stadium with important parts of the city and makes the return towards the centre easier than driving through traffic after the match.
It is worth securing tickets in good time.
What could decide the evening in Lisbon
Benfica enter the match as a team that scored six goals in their previous European home appearance and that have several different attacking solutions in Pavlidis, Prestianni, Schjelderup, Lukebakio, Rafa and Durán. Aarhus, on the other hand, must show that conceding four goals in Baku was an exception rather than a problem that will recur when an opponent increases the tempo.
The duel between Benfica's press and the first phase of AGF's build-up will be particularly interesting. If Arnstad and his teammates find a way out of the press, Bogere and the fast players around him can find space for transitions. If Benfica force the visitors into mistakes close to their own penalty area, Estádio da Luz could very quickly become an uncomfortable place for the Danish champions.
Aarhus also have an important lesson from Baku. After conceding the first goal, they were unable to calm the match down, and the second, third and fourth goals turned their first-leg advantage into a heavy aggregate defeat. In Lisbon, the reaction after every important moment will be just as important as the initial plan.
Benfica also still have details to improve. The 2-2 draw against Académico de Viseu showed vulnerability when an opponent manages to survive the initial pressure, while Hearts managed to take the lead in the second half of the return leg before Lukebakio's quick equaliser. After that match, Marco Silva openly spoke about the need for greater control and better decisions.
The first meeting should therefore not be viewed only through the difference in the clubs' names and the size of the stadium. Benfica want to build an advantage before travelling to Denmark. Aarhus want to prove that they can withstand the pressure, punish the space left by the home side and take the tie back home without a result that would turn the return leg into a formality.
