Stadion Śląski in Chorzów once again becomes one of the key focal points of world athletics on 23 August. The Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial is part of the Wanda Diamond League, a series in which points are collected throughout the season for the final showdown. The Chorzów meeting comes between Lausanne and Zürich, less than two weeks before the final in Brussels. That is why it is one of the last opportunities to earn points and improve positions in the standings.
The main stadium programme begins with the memorial section at 14:00, while the Diamond League segment starts at 16:00. The stadium gates and Diamond Picnic open at 12:00, and the opening ceremony is scheduled for 13:30. The award ceremony is planned for around 18:00. The detailed timetable for individual disciplines has not yet been published, so for the entire sporting programme it is reasonable to arrive before the start of the Diamond League section.

A programme combining sprints, hurdles, middle-distance races and technical events
The published programme shows why athletics in a stadium is so interesting to watch live: several completely different types of competition take place in the same space. The men's programme includes the 100 m, 400 m, 1500 m, 110 m hurdles, 400 m hurdles and 3000 m steeplechase, along with pole vault, discus throw, hammer throw and shot put. The women's programme includes the 100 m, 400 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, 100 m hurdles, high jump and triple jump.
The rhythm of the afternoon therefore changes constantly. The 100 m sprint lasts only a few seconds, in the 400 m and 400 m hurdles the distribution of effort throughout the entire lap is important, while the 1500 m brings tactical positioning and acceleration in the final stages. The 3000 m steeplechase adds the water jump and the rhythm of clearing barriers.
In the pole vault and high jump, the competition extends over several heights, while in the throwing events a single attempt can overturn the standings. That is why it is worth following both the scoreboard and the sectors away from the track.
The weekend programme begins as early as Saturday, 22 August, when city events are scheduled in a square in Katowice: the men's high jump and the women's long jump and shot put. The main stadium programme in Chorzów remains the focus on Sunday.
Duplantis, Mahuchikh, Warholm and Tharp bring world records to the same venue
The biggest confirmed name is once again Armand Duplantis. The Swedish pole vaulter holds the world record of 6.31 m, set in Uppsala on 12 March 2026. Chorzów already holds a special place in his career: it was at Stadion Śląski in 2024 that he cleared 6.26 m and set a world record at the time. His return means that attention will also be focused on heights above six metres, and any attempts at a record height could command the entire stadium's attention.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh also arrives as a world record holder. The Ukrainian high jumper holds the record of 2.10 m, set in Paris in 2024. Her appearance gives the women's high jump additional significance because the contest develops as the bar is raised and the number of athletes decreases.
Karsten Warholm, the world record holder with 45.94 s, has been confirmed for the 400 m hurdles. The Norwegian also has very recent proof of his form: in London on 18 July 2026 he ran 46.61. Stadion Śląski also suits him - at the same venue in 2025 he won in 46.28, which was the best result of that season. In this event, the duel develops over the entire lap, and the rhythm over the final few hurdles often decides the outcome.
An even newer name on the list of world record holders is Ja'Kobe Tharp. The American ran 12.75 s in the 110 m hurdles in Eugene on 10 June 2026, breaking Aries Merritt's record of 12.80. A month later in Budapest he won in 12.85, the fifth-fastest result in history at the time of that performance. Jakub Szymański has also been confirmed for Chorzów, so the men's high hurdles already have a clear sporting storyline even before the full start list is announced.
The 100-metre sprint features two different star-studded line-ups
The women's 100 m already has a line-up that could make it one of the most-watched moments of the evening. Confirmed athletes include Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, the world champion, Julien Alfred, the reigning Olympic champion, and Ewa Swoboda. Jefferson-Wooden won the Diamond League race in Eugene on 4 July 2026 in 10.78. Alfred won Olympic gold in the 100 m in Paris in 2024, while Swoboda gets the opportunity in Chorzów to test herself against two sprinters who have won the biggest global titles.
Oblique Seville, the world champion in the 100 m, has been confirmed for the men's 100 m. The reaction at the start, the first 30 metres of acceleration and the transition to maximum speed make this race one of the most concentrated moments of the programme.
Other confirmed names include Natalia Bukowiecka in the 400 m, Pia Skrzyszowska, Paweł Fajdek and Piotr Lisek. As the full start list may still be expanded, it makes more sense to stick to the announced names than to construct duels in advance that have not yet been confirmed.
Why this meeting matters in the Diamond League standings
The Diamond League is not a championship with qualifying heats and semifinals within a single day. Each meeting functions as a separate elite competition, and placings in Diamond disciplines earn points toward the season finale. The top eight receive points ranging from 8 points for victory to 1 point for eighth place.
The qualification threshold depends on the event. The final features the top six in field events, the top eight in races from 100 to 800 m, and the top ten in the 1500 m and longer distances. In the event of equal points, the better regular-season result takes precedence. In throwing events and horizontal jumps at regular meetings, the "Final 3" format is used, while this format does not apply at the Diamond League final itself.
Because of its place in the calendar, Chorzów is one of the final moments of the season when the standings can change significantly. Zürich follows after it, and then comes the two-day final in Brussels on 4 and 5 September. Spectators are therefore not only watching the battle for victory that afternoon. For an athlete on the edge of the qualification zone, fourth or fifth place can be just as important as victory is for someone who has already secured a place in the final.
Stadion Śląski is designed for following several events in parallel
Stadion Śląski has 54,378 seats and nine lanes. The infrastructure includes three pole-vault runways, three long-jump and triple-jump runways, a water jump for the 3000 m steeplechase, two high-jump areas and throwing sectors. This allows for quick transitions between very different events.
For visitors, the choice of seat changes the experience. Sections along the finishing straight provide the best sense of speed in sprints and the finishes of middle-distance races. Seats closer to the bends offer a better view of how the 400 m and 400 m hurdles develop. For jumps and throws, the view toward the inside of the field becomes more important, so it is worth studying the stadium plan in advance and the position of your section relative to the runways and throwing areas.
The stadium opened in 1956, and its modern athletics reputation has strengthened particularly in recent years. The 2024 meeting was watched by 42,357 people, and two world records fell that same afternoon: Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran 7:17.55 in the 3000 m, while Duplantis cleared 6.26 m. A year later, Warholm ran 46.28 in the 400 m hurdles in Chorzów in front of 40,211 spectators. These figures provide a concrete picture of why the stadium is no longer merely a large arena on the athletics calendar, but a venue associated with world-class performances.

Getting to Chorzów and moving around the stadium
The stadium is located next to Park Śląski, a large green complex in Chorzów between the urban areas of Chorzów and Katowice. Katowice is a practical transport base, and local public transport connects the central parts of the metropolitan area with the stadium area.
Within the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia network, there are tram stops called "Chorzów Stadion Śląski" and "Park Śląski Wejście Główne". Current timetables show connections on lines 6 and 11 through the stadium area, but additional lines, increased services or traffic changes are possible on the day of a major event. For this reason, it is useful to check the current GZM timetable immediately before departure rather than relying on a schedule saved several days earlier.
Those arriving by car should be more cautious. The stadium has parking infrastructure, but the availability of individual areas during a major sporting event depends on the special traffic arrangements. The organiser has not yet published a detailed parking and road-closure plan for this event. If confirmation of a parking space is not part of your plan, public transport may be the more predictable choice, especially when leaving after the programme has ended.
Park Śląski offers enough space for an entire day, not just a few hours of athletics
The stadium's location in Park Śląski is practical for visitors who arrive in Chorzów early. The park covers around 620 hectares and is home to Planetarium Śląskie, Śląski Ogród Zoologiczny, Górnośląski Park Etnograficzny and Legendia. A trip to the meeting can therefore be combined with a few hours in the area around the stadium.
Nevertheless, on competition day the priority should be entering the stadium with enough time to spare. The gates opening at 12:00 leaves four hours until the start of the Diamond League segment, but the memorial programme begins as early as 14:00. Anyone who wants to see the full sporting picture, rather than only the races given the greatest television exposure, will get more out of arriving before the opening ceremony.
How to follow live athletics without missing the key moments
At a top-level meeting, several things happen in parallel. While a start is being prepared on the track, a jumper may be on a third attempt and a thrower in the final round. It helps to choose your priorities in advance and follow the scoreboard.
- For the 100 m and 110 m hurdles, be in your seat before the athletes are introduced - the entire race is over in just a few seconds.
- In the pole vault and high jump, follow changes in the height of the bar and the number of competitors remaining.
- In the 400 m hurdles, watch the rhythm between the barriers, not just the finishing straight.
- In the throwing events, pay attention to the standings before the final attempts, because the top of the standings can change with a single throw.
- For the 1500 m and 5000 m, do not judge by the early order - a tactically slow first half often leads to a very fast finish.
In Chorzów, it is also worth staying until the end. The history of recent editions shows that the biggest performance of the day can happen late in the programme, as in 2024 when the world records in the 3000 m and pole vault came on the same afternoon. With current world record holders in the pole vault, high jump, 400 m hurdles and 110 m hurdles, the sporting value of this edition does not depend on a single star or a single race.
