Fortuna Sittard - SC Cambuur: first home test and an opportunity for the visitors to respond
Fortuna Sittard and SC Cambuur enter the second round from completely different positions. The match is scheduled for Saturday, 15 August at 21:00 at Fortuna Sittard Stadion. Fortuna opened the season with a 2-2 draw away to PSV Eindhoven. Ole Romeny put the team ahead, the hosts then turned the match around, and Edouard Michut scored late on to secure a point. SC Cambuur returned to the top flight with a 0-4 defeat against Excelsior Rotterdam at Kooi Stadion.
For that reason, the match in Sittard already carries a clear competitive edge in August. Fortuna want to confirm the value of the point earned in Eindhoven and turn their first home match of the season into a victory. Cambuur must show that the heavy opening defeat is not a realistic measure of the team that earned promotion back among the elite last season.
At the time this guide was prepared, the table was not yet complete because not all clubs had played their first-round matches. Fortuna Sittard had one point after their first appearance and were fifth, while SC Cambuur were 18th without a point following their defeat. It is only an early snapshot, but the contrast is clear.
Tickets for this match have been in demand among supporters, especially because it is Fortuna's first league match in front of their own fans in the new season.
Fortuna immediately showed they can be difficult opponents
Danny Buijs received several important answers in Eindhoven. Fortuna did not simply defend the result. Romeny had an early goal disallowed for offside, Mohamed Ihattaren tested the goalkeeper, and the team created dangerous situations through quick transitions. Romeny then scored to make it 0-1, while Michut struck in stoppage time for the final 2-2 scoreline.
Mattijs Branderhorst made several important saves, Yassin Oukili and Philip Brittijn controlled the midfield, while Ihattaren looked for space between the lines. Romeny and Lequincio Zeefuik offer two different threats: Romeny attacks space and finishes moves quickly, while Zeefuik can hold up the ball and create space for his teammates.
Romeny is particularly interesting ahead of this match. Fortuna brought him in on loan from Oxford United this summer, and the forward had already scored from a rebound in the final pre-season match against APOEL Nicosia. He then also scored against PSV. Michut, meanwhile, came off the bench against PSV and became the decisive figure in the closing stages.
What Fortuna showed in their last two matches
- They beat APOEL Nicosia 2-1, with goals from Philip Brittijn and Ole Romeny.
- They drew 2-2 against PSV Eindhoven after leading 1-0 and then falling 1-2 behind.
- Romeny scored in both matches.
- Branderhorst made important saves under pressure in both matches.
- Michut came off the bench against PSV and scored the goal that set the final score.
Fortuna nevertheless have no reason to relax. Against PSV, they spent a long period under pressure after the break, and the hosts completed their turnaround between the 55th and 75th minutes. Against Cambuur, it will therefore be important not to surrender too much space and possession if they take the lead.
Cambuur must fix the space between the lines
SC Cambuur received an unpleasant reminder against Excelsior of how severely mistakes are punished at this level. Johan Plat started the opening match of the season with Thijs Jansen in goal, a back four of Rik Mulders, Ismaël Baouf, Jamal Amofa and Lucas Jetten, a midfield of Ryan van de Pavert, Nicky Souren and Rafik El Arguioui, and an attacking trio of Iwan Henstra, Skye Vink and Ilyes Hamache.
The start was not without positive elements. Cambuur began with intensity, Vink and Hamache found themselves in finishing situations, but Excelsior subsequently found space with increasing ease. The biggest problem was the distance between the lines and the reaction after losing possession. The first two goals came after errors from which the opposition moved forward extremely quickly, and another two followed corners.
If Cambuur's wide defenders push high and the midfield is late closing the centre, Fortuna have players capable of punishing them. Ihattaren can accelerate the game with his first touch, Oukili can carry the ball forward, and Romeny can attack the space in behind before the defence reorganises.
This is Plat's first season as Cambuur's head coach. He took over the team after Henk de Jong's promotion-winning season, and the club chose him because of his vision of attacking football. In Sittard, he will have to find a better balance between bravery on the ball and protection behind it.
Skye Vink and Ilyes Hamache are particularly worth watching. Vink scored against Bologna FC during pre-season, while Hamache joined from FC Schalke 04 this summer. Rafik El Arguioui can also improve the quality of the final pass from midfield, while Nicky Souren must provide balance.
Fortuna's experience against the energy of the promoted side
One of the biggest contrasts in this match is experience. Cambuur's report from the opening round states that as many as nine of the starting eleven against Excelsior had never previously played a match in the Dutch top flight. Fortuna, by contrast, enter their ninth consecutive season in the Eredivisie and under Buijs have a core accustomed to that rhythm.
For Cambuur, it will be important to make decisions quickly after losing the ball and not leave a large gap between midfield and defence. The schedule after Sittard is not gentle: home matches against Feyenoord and FC Twente follow. A positive result in the second round would therefore be valuable both for points and confidence.
Fortuna face a different challenge. After earning a point at PSV, they will be expected to take control of the game. Against Cambuur, they are likely to have more spells in possession and will need to show patience against a block that could be more cautious following the experience of the opening round.
Head-to-head meetings warn that home advantage is no guarantee
The most recent league meetings between these clubs before Cambuur's relegation from the top flight did not follow a simple pattern. Fortuna won 2-1 in Leeuwarden in January 2023, but Cambuur had won 4-1 in Sittard a few months earlier. In the 2021/2022 season, Cambuur won 2-1 at home, while Fortuna won 1-0 in Sittard.
The four most recent league meetings therefore produced two wins for each side and no draws. The squads have changed significantly since then, but the statistic is enough of a reminder that home advantage alone is no guarantee.
Fortuna Sittard Stadion and the atmosphere of the first home evening
Fortuna Sittard Stadion is located at Milaanstraat 120 in Sittard and holds just over 12,000 spectators. Fortuna have played there since November 1999. This evening carries additional significance because it is the team's first home league appearance of the season.
For SC Cambuur supporters, 800 tickets were allocated, with organised travel arrangements by car and bus. The combination of a home opener and a promoted side arriving for their first away match after a heavy defeat should ensure a loud reaction from the stands to every important moment.
If Fortuna carry over the energy from Eindhoven, the crowd will expect pressure from the start. If Cambuur survive the opening phase and begin putting together longer spells of possession, they could change the emotional rhythm of the match.
Seats in the stands are disappearing quickly, so it is worth securing tickets in good time.
Getting to the stadium and practical information
The stadium is well connected by the N276, N294 and A2 roads. On matchday, congestion should be expected in the immediate area. For those arriving by train, buses run from the direction of Sittard station towards the stadium, and convenient stops are Parijsboulevard/Stadion and Sportzone. From there, the stadium is another few minutes away on foot.
Special parking information has also been published for this particular match. Some of the usual parking areas are unavailable, so it is not advisable to plan on arriving immediately before kick-off without a plan.
- P1 is the garage next to Lissabonlaan.
- P6 is located next to Oslostraat.
- P8 is listed next to Poststraat in the information for this match.
- In the Bedrijvenstad Sittard area, parking outside permitted spaces is prohibited and checks are carried out.
- For public transport, check the current connection to the Parijsboulevard/Stadion or Sportzone stops.
The sales point at the entrance to the garage on Lissabonlaan opens two hours before kick-off. The opening time of the stadium entrances themselves is not specifically stated in the currently published information, so planning an earlier arrival is useful.
SC Cambuur supporters have a separate travel arrangement for the away section, with organised arrival by car and bus.
What to pay particular attention to on the pitch
The first detail is Fortuna's duel with Cambuur's build-up from the back line. Excelsior showed that the visitors can be punished as soon as they lose the ball in the early phase of an attack. Fortuna can therefore try to tempt Cambuur's centre-backs and midfielders into risky passes and then quickly look for Romeny.
The second detail is the space around Ihattaren. If Cambuur defend with gaps that are too large, he can receive the ball between midfield and defence and turn towards goal. The third detail is set pieces: two goals against Excelsior came after corners, so the positioning for the second ball and the movement out towards the taker will be under scrutiny.
At the other end, Hamache and Vink can attack the space behind Fortuna if the hosts push too many players forward. Cambuur do not need prolonged possession to be dangerous. A few accurate passes after winning the ball can completely change the picture of the match.
Players who can determine the direction of the match
- Ole Romeny - scored in the final pre-season match and in the first league round.
- Mohamed Ihattaren - Fortuna's player between the lines who can create and finish attacks.
- Edouard Michut - scorer of the late goal for 2-2 away to PSV.
- Skye Vink - Cambuur's central attacking option and a scorer during pre-season against Bologna FC.
- Ilyes Hamache - winger who joined Cambuur this summer and got into finishing positions against Excelsior.
- Jamal Amofa - an important figure in the visitors' back line in a match in which the defence must be more compact.
Squad status and coaching decisions
Fortuna played against PSV without Kristoffer Peterson and Shiloh 't Zand, while Iván Márquez and Sven Simons had already been out of the squad for a longer period. That was the situation in the first round and is not confirmation that all of the same players will also miss the match against Cambuur. Their availability closer to the match could affect Buijs's options.
Despite those absences, Fortuna had enough quality in Eindhoven to change the rhythm of the match. Michut is the best example: after returning to the squad, he received minutes from the bench and delivered the equaliser.
For Cambuur, the question is whether Plat will change the structure after the 0-4 defeat or retain the core of the team and seek a better execution of the same principles. In the opening round, he made two changes at half-time, with Morgan Costarelli and Sami Bouhoudane coming on. In Sittard, one of the key decisions will be how high to allow the full-backs to push and how many players to keep behind the ball when an attack ends in Fortuna's half.
Ticket sales for this match are ongoing. For a neutral spectator, this is an interesting early-season contest because it brings together hosts encouraged by a point in Eindhoven and a promoted side that immediately has to show a response after the most difficult possible start.
