Lech Poznań - FC Thun: the final obstacle before the league phase
Lech Poznań and FC Thun meet at Enea Stadion in the first leg of the Europa League play-off, the final qualifying round before the league phase. The match is scheduled for 20 August at 19:00, with the return leg taking place seven days later in Thun. This means that the result in Poznań will directly determine how much both teams will have to risk in the second match.
The hosts enter the tie after a very convincing victory over KÍ Klaksvík. Lech won the first match in Poznań 1:0, then triumphed 5:0 in the return leg in the Faroe Islands to complete the tie with a 6:0 aggregate score. FC Thun had a different path: after a 3:0 home win against Víkingur Reykjavík, they lost the return leg 3:2, but preserved a sufficient advantage and advanced 5:3 on aggregate.
For a supporter coming to Enea Stadion, this is a match with very clear stakes: the winner of the tie advances to the Europa League league phase. It is worth securing tickets in good time.
Lech arrive on a run that has boosted confidence
Niels Frederiksen's team opened their domestic league season with a 0:0 draw against Cracovia, then defeated Wieczysta Kraków 2:1 and Piast Gliwice 3:0. They collected seven points from their first three league rounds before the away match against Wisła Płock. At the same time, they went through two completely different European situations: they were eliminated by Aarhus GF after a dramatic two-legged tie, and then against KÍ Klaksvík they showed how dominant they can be when they take control of space and tempo.
The way Lech defeated Piast is particularly important. After the 3:0 win, Frederiksen stressed that all three goals came from transitional situations, while all three scorers had come off the bench. This shows that Lech have the depth to change the pace and can punish an opponent when it loses its structure after giving the ball away.
Against KÍ Klaksvík, the picture was different. In Poznań, the opponent defended very deep for a long time, so Lech had to patiently circulate the ball around the penalty area. In the return leg, after the opening goal, they gained more space and turned it into a big victory. Frederiksen singled out precisely that moment as crucial: when the opponent had to push higher and increase the pressure, spaces opened up that Lech's technically gifted players can attack.

Ishak's status is the hosts' most important question
Mikael Ishak remains the central figure in Lech's attack, but his fitness status needs to be monitored right up until the match. The captain went off in the return leg against KÍ Klaksvík because of a muscle problem, and Frederiksen said after the match that it still had to be determined how serious the injury was. Four days before the meeting with Thun, there was no confirmation that would justify claiming that he would definitely play or definitely be absent.
In the previous season, Ishak scored 31 goals and added nine assists for Lech in all competitions, making it the best season of his career. If he is not fully fit, more responsibility will fall on Yannick Agnero and attacking players such as Patrik Wålemark, Daniel Håkans, Luis Palma and Pablo Rodríguez.
Antoni Kozubal is also important for the connection between the lines. After the victory in the Faroe Islands, he specifically highlighted quick ball movement and play through the middle between the opposition lines. Against Thun, that ability could be particularly valuable because the Swiss team are not coming merely to defend their own penalty area - in their matches so far, they have shown a willingness to press high and win the ball aggressively.
FC Thun are dangerous when the match becomes open
FC Thun, led by Gian-Luca Privitelli, arrive in Poznań as the reigning champions of Switzerland. Their start to the season has shown a team that can be very dangerous in attack, but also vulnerable when the match turns into a succession of transitions.
In the league, Thun opened with a 3:1 away victory over FC Luzern. That was followed by two heavy defeats, 0:6 at home against Young Boys and 2:4 away against FC Basel. In European qualifying, the picture was better: against Víkingur Reykjavík, Thun won 3:0 at home, then lost 3:2 in Iceland and still advanced comfortably thanks to the result from the first match.
Brighton Labeau is one of the players Lech's defence must not lose sight of. He scored in both matches against Víkingur and had previously also found the net against Dinamo Zagreb. In the 3:0 home victory over Víkingur, it was particularly clear how dangerous Thun can be from set pieces: Jan Bamert scored with a header after a corner from Fabio Fehr, while Labeau scored following a free kick taken by Nico Maier. In the return leg, Fehr scored from open play, while Labeau again headed in after a corner.
This suggests that Lech will have to be disciplined when defending their own penalty area. Fouls in wide areas and unnecessary corners give Thun exactly the situations in which Fehr and Maier have already created danger, while Bamert and Labeau attack the final cross.
Where Thun leave space
The 2:4 defeat to Basel provided a useful tactical clue. Thun tried for long periods to press high and win the ball in the opposition half, but Basel repeatedly exploited the space behind that press and quickly advanced towards the penalty area. Transition play was precisely Lech's strongest weapon in the second half against Piast.
That is why one of the key battles in this match will be the first reaction after losing the ball. If Thun lose possession with a large number of players ahead of the ball, Lech have wingers and wide players fast enough to finish the attack before the visitors' block can reorganise. On the other hand, if Lech leave too much space while attempting to press high, Labeau and Thun's midfielders can attack directly and force the home centre-backs to run towards their own goal.
Absences to monitor
For Lech, the most current confirmed fitness concern is Mikael Ishak and the muscle problem he suffered in the return leg against KÍ Klaksvík. Earlier in August, Filip Jagiełło, Leo Bengtsson, Kamil Jakóbczyk and Ali Gholizadeh did not take part in one team training session because they were returning from injuries, but that information alone is not enough to declare them unavailable for Thun.
For FC Thun, the situation regarding Genis Montolio is much clearer. The defender suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the spring, and the club announced that he would be out for several months. Mattias Käit was outside the squad in earlier European matches this summer because of a foot injury. His status for Poznań should be treated separately from Montolio's long-term absence because, at the time of checking, the club had not published an equally definitive assessment for the match on 20 August.
How the match could develop
Lech have a logical reason to try to impose the tempo from the start. They play the first match at home, and with the return leg in Thun, having an advantage before travelling to Switzerland is very valuable. However, the 3:0 result with which Thun overcame Víkingur shows that the visitors are not a team it would be wise to attack without protection behind the ball.
Frederiksen's team are comfortable when they can combine two speeds. In positional attacks, they look for players between the lines and width from the flanks, while after winning the ball they accelerate into open space. Against Thun, it could be particularly interesting to see whether Lech deliberately invite the visitors' pressure before bypassing it with a single vertical pass.
Privitelli's Thun, on the other hand, have already shown that they have no problem playing boldly away from home. In Basel they tried to press high, and against Víkingur, even with a large aggregate advantage in the return leg, they took the lead twice. Such an approach could produce a match with more chances than Lech had in their first home game against KÍ Klaksvík.
For spectators, this means that the opening minutes could be very important. An early Lech goal would force Thun to open their block even more. An early goal for the visitors would change the logic of the evening and put the hosts in a position where they have to attack an opponent capable of threatening from set pieces and transitions.
Enea Stadion: a major home factor
Enea Stadion is located at Bułgarska 17 in Poznań and has a capacity of 42,837. It is a venue where Lech regularly play in front of one of the largest crowds in Polish club football. As a concrete indication of the potential noise level, city data state that 41,109 people watched Lech's decisive league match in May 2025.
For a European play-off, such an atmosphere can have a tactical effect, especially if the hosts create several early chances or a sequence of corners. Thun have experience of playing under pressure and have already visited Zagreb, Basel and Reykjavík this summer, but Enea Stadion remains a different test because of the size of the stands and Lech's supporter base.
Seats in the stands disappear quickly ahead of matches at this level, so it is worth planning the journey and securing tickets sufficiently early.
Getting to the stadium and parking
For Lech matches, the city authorities regularly recommend public transport, especially trams. At a recent home match, tram lines 1, 6, 13 and 15 and bus lines 145, 163, 191 and 193 were reinforced. The timetable and any special changes for 20 August should be checked immediately before travelling.
For those arriving by car, the club publishes a list of car parks outside the immediate stadium perimeter. Several practical reference points:

- Business Garden on Kolorowa Street - 100 spaces, about 1.1 km from the stadium
- car park by the Pixel Poznań building - 100 spaces, about 0.7 km from the stadium
- MTP underground car park on Głogowska Street - 650 spaces, about 4.1 km from the stadium
Temporary traffic restrictions are introduced around the stadium on matchdays, so arriving by car at the last moment carries the risk of additional delays. For a visitor coming to Poznań for the first time, public transport is a more predictable option than searching for a space a few hundred metres from the stands.
What to watch especially closely from the stands
This tie has several clear tactical details that can easily be followed even without statistics on a screen.
- Lech's reaction after losing the ball - whether they can immediately close down Labeau and prevent Thun from breaking directly forward
- Thun's set pieces - Fehr and Maier have already created goals with quality deliveries, while Bamert and Labeau attack the aerial space
- the space behind the visitors' high press - an area that Basel and other opponents managed to exploit when Thun lost their balance
- Lech's bench - the victory against Piast showed that Frederiksen can get goals and a change of pace from players who do not start the match
- Ishak's status - his availability changes both the finishing of attacks and the way Lech connect midfield with the forward line
The first 90 minutes, not the entire contest
The most important thing to understand before arriving at the stadium is that everything will not be decided in Poznań. The second match will be played on 27 August at VISANA STADION in Thun. Because of that, even a relatively calm score after an hour could produce a very cautious finish or, conversely, a sudden increase in risk if one side decides that it needs a larger advantage before the return leg.
Lech will try to make use of home advantage and the form they showed against KÍ Klaksvík, but Thun arrive after a European tie in which they scored five goals and have already secured at least a place in one European league phase. This allows them to play without existential pressure, but it does not reduce the value of progressing to the stronger competition.
Ticket sales for this match are under way, and for visitors it is just as important to plan transport as it is to plan their place in the stands. Enea Stadion can accommodate more than 42,000 people, and the traffic arrangements around Bułgarska on matchdays are not the same as on ordinary days.
