Malmö FF - Djurgårdens IF: guide to the big Allsvenskan clash at Eleda Stadion
Malmö FF and Djurgårdens IF enter their head-to-head encounter from different positions, but under very similar pressure: points are important for both teams. Djurgården are battling near the top, while Malmö FF are trying to reduce the gap after an inconsistent spell of results and return among the clubs setting the pace in the championship.
One change compared with previously published information is particularly important for visitors. According to the current schedules of both clubs, the Malmö FF - Djurgårdens IF match will be played on Monday, 24 August at 19:00 at Eleda Stadion. Malmö FF have a different kind of problem. After a turbulent spring, the team appointed a new head coach, Gaute Helstrup, who took charge at the beginning of July. Results have not been stable in the latest rounds: Malmö defeated IF Brommapojkarna 2-1 away at the beginning of August, but then lost 2-1 to Degerfors IF at Eleda Stadion.
That is precisely why the head-to-head meeting has the potential to become an important turning point. Malmö need consistency, while Djurgården do not want to lose touch with the leading clubs.
Gaute Helstrup is trying to change the way Malmö control matches
Gaute Helstrup took over Malmö FF after a period in which the team had been led by an interim coaching staff. Upon his arrival, he stressed his desire for brave, intense and proactive football, with initiative both when the team has the ball and when it does not.
That is an important detail specifically against Djurgården.
The first meeting showed that Malmö can win even without dominating possession. In the long term, however, Helstrup wants a team that will not simply wait for space to open up for transitions, but will more actively determine where the match is played. Against Djurgården, the first press after losing the ball will be particularly interesting.
Under Honkavaara, Djurgården like to have enough players around the ball to control possession and open space toward the flanks. If Malmö manage to cut off the first passing lanes, the home side may create opportunities to attack before the visitors' defence is set.
On the other hand, pressing too aggressively leaves space behind the first line of pressure. Djurgården have enough pace and technical quality to punish such situations.
Kristian Lien and Bo Hegland carry a large part of Djurgården's threat
One of the most important questions for Malmö will be how to limit the attacking partnership of Kristian Lien and Bo Hegland.
Lien is a classic centre-forward who provides depth, but is also strong enough to hold up the ball with his back to goal. He is particularly dangerous when Djurgården move the ball quickly enough from midfield into the final third. His ability to attack the space between the centre-back and full-back also creates opportunities for players arriving from deeper positions.
He showed just how dangerous he can be in the 6-0 victory over Västerås at the beginning of August. Lien scored four goals in that match.
Hegland offers a different profile. He can create numerical superiority between the lines, move inside and unlock a defence with the final pass. In the same match against Västerås, he recorded two assists, and his creativity has also been important in other strong Djurgården performances this season.
Honkavaara therefore has several options. Djurgården can attack down the flanks, they can look for Lien with an earlier vertical pass, but they can also patiently circulate the ball until Hegland or Patric Åslund find space between Malmö's lines.
For the home defence, stopping only one player will not be enough. If a centre-back steps out aggressively toward Lien, the rest of the back line must immediately close the space behind him.
Malmö have their own ways of attacking the visitors' defence
Erik Botheim remains one of the most important reference points in Malmö's attack. His value is not limited to finishing. He can hold up the ball, open space for players arriving behind him and attack crosses from different areas. In July, for example, he decided the away match against Degerfors with the goal in a 1-0 victory.
Sead Haksabanovic also has a special place in the story of this matchup. It was he who scored the only goal in Malmö FF's April victory over Djurgården. In a match in which Malmö did not have many chances, his finishing made the difference.
Midfielders such as Otto Rosengren will also be important. In the first meeting against Djurgården, Rosengren assisted the winning goal, and his work in both directions can be particularly valuable when the match becomes more open.
Helstrup will therefore look for balance. Malmö do not want to allow Djurgården to keep the ball around their penalty area for long periods, but it is not necessarily essential for the home side to have a pronounced advantage in possession either. For Malmö, where they win the ball and how quickly they can then reach Botheim and Haksabanovic may be more important.
Injuries have seriously changed Malmö FF's defensive options
Malmö have suffered several important injuries during the season. The most serious blow is the condition of Pontus Jansson. The experienced defender injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the first away match against Djurgården this season and continues his rehabilitation.
The club's latest medical report from 13 August lists several other players who are in the recovery process.

- Oscar Sjöstrand is undergoing rehabilitation following cruciate ligament surgery.
- Emmanuel Ekong continues rehabilitation following surgery.
- Noah John has begun gradually increasing his work on the pitch with the fitness team.
- Warren Kamanzi continues rehabilitation according to plan.
That does not mean that the status of each of those players will be identical on matchday. Particularly for players who have already begun work on the pitch, the situation may change during the final week of preparations. Nevertheless, the long-term injuries to Jansson and Sjöstrand clearly restrict the home team's options.
For Djurgården, the situation is less clear this many days before the match. In the latest published report relating to the away match against Västerås, Peter Langhoff and Angelo Agbejoye were unavailable, while Alexander Andersson was absent because of an international commitment at youth level. Their status for Malmö should only be assessed after newer information becomes available during match week.
The first head-to-head meeting provides a good tactical clue
Malmö's 1-0 result from April does not tell the whole story.
Djurgården had more of the ball, more shots and a clear advantage in corners. Malmö defended compactly for long periods, accepted spells without possession and waited for an opportunity. When it came, Haksabanovic took it after Rosengren's assist.
The return match can therefore be expected to produce an interesting clash of ideas.
If Djurgården take control of possession again, the visitors will have to find better solutions in the final twenty metres. Simply circulating the ball and making a large number of entries into the final third are not enough. Lien must receive better-quality service inside the penalty area, while Hegland needs space between the lines.
Malmö, on the other hand, now have a coach who wants more initiative. That may mean the home side will not accept an identical scenario to the one in Stockholm. A higher press and quicker regaining of the ball can create more opportunities, but they also increase the risk of open space behind midfield.
The first 20 minutes could be especially important. Eleda Stadion often pushes Malmö toward an aggressive start, while Djurgården will try to survive that wave by calming the tempo through possession.
Eleda Stadion: a compact arena made for football
Eleda Stadion opened in 2009 and accommodates approximately 22,500 spectators for home matches. The stands are close to the pitch, so the intensity of the match is felt especially strongly when the stadium is well filled.
For Malmö, that is an important advantage. The team have also had difficult home evenings during the season, but matches against major rivals traditionally generate much greater pressure from the stands than games in which the home side must impose the tempo themselves against a deep-lying opponent.
Djurgården also travel with a loud supporter base, so this fixture has all the ingredients for a match in which more than just the home section will be heard.

How to get to Eleda Stadion
The stadium is located in the sports district south of central Malmö. For travellers arriving by train or staying in the city centre, one of the simplest options is to travel via Triangeln station and then continue toward Stadionområdet.
Construction work in the immediate surroundings should also be taken into account. Major changes to the old stadium and the surrounding sports complex are under way during 2026, meaning some usual pedestrian and cycling routes are unavailable.
- Train: the nearest major station is Triangeln, from where the stadium can be reached on foot through the Pildammsparken area.
- Bus: several regular routes stop nearby, and a special route 84 to Isstadion also operates for home matches of the men's team.
- Bicycle: there are a large number of bicycle parking spaces around the stadium.
- Car: the club warns that finding a parking space in the area can be difficult and recommends public transport or cycling.
- On foot: because of the construction work, not every previous route around Eric Perssons väg can be used, so visitors should follow the current access routes toward the stadium.
For international visitors arriving via København Airport or Malmö Airport, it is practical to arrange travel to central Malmö first and only then complete the final part of the journey to the stadium. On matchday itself, allowing additional time to approach the arena can be more useful than trying to arrive immediately before kick-off.
When the entrances open
Specific instructions for the match against Djurgården are usually published closer to the event itself, but the general Eleda Stadion rules provide a good framework for planning.
At Malmö FF home matches, entrances to the standing sections and VIP areas open two hours before kick-off. The remaining entrances generally open an hour and a half before the match. The club recommends arriving early to avoid queues at the security checks.
Small bags are allowed, but they are inspected at the entrance. Visitors who do not need them can speed up entry by arriving without a bag.

Without Pontus Jansson, the home side must find a way to physically control Kristian Lien without opening too much space for Hegland and the players arriving from deeper positions. If Lien regularly receives the ball facing goal inside the final third, Malmö will be in trouble.
2. What Malmö do after winning the ball
The first meeting showed how dangerous the home side can be without having a large share of possession. Helstrup now wants more control, but quick transitions could once again be the shortest route to chances. Haksabanovic and Botheim can punish situations in which Djurgården's full-backs are positioned high up the pitch.
3. Turning possession into genuine chances
Djurgården had 61 percent possession in the first meeting, but only two shots on target. If the visitors again dominate possession, they must turn it into higher-quality finishing. Malmö, on the other hand, must prevent a repeat of matches in which the opponent is given too much time around the penalty area.
