Motherwell FC against SC Freiburg - two matches for a place in the league phase
Fir Park gets one of Motherwell's most interesting European matches in recent years. Motherwell FC and SC Freiburg meet in the first leg of the Conference League playoff, and after the return leg in Germany only one team will continue to the league phase of the competition.
The first match is played in Motherwell on Thursday, 20 August. Motherwell FC confirmed a 19:30 local-time kick-off, or 20:30 CEST. The return leg is seven days later at the Europa-Park Stadion in Freiburg.
There is a difference in European experience, but the home side enters the match with very concrete arguments. Motherwell has already overcome two qualifying obstacles, is unbeaten at the start of the domestic league season and has just played one of its best matches of the summer at Fir Park. Freiburg, on the other hand, arrives after a season in which it finished seventh in the Bundesliga and reached the Europa League final.
Tickets for this match are in demand among supporters. The reason is simple: Motherwell has the opportunity on its own ground to take the first step towards the league phase against a club that played in a European final only a few months earlier.
Motherwell reached the Freiburg hurdle unbeaten in Europe
Alfred Johansson's team opened its European campaign against Havnar Bóltfelag. Motherwell won the first match at home 2-0 and then recorded a 3-0 victory in the return leg in the Faroe Islands. The next obstacle was HJK Helsinki.
It finished 1-1 in Finland, moving the decision to Fir Park. On 13 August, Motherwell beat HJK 2-0 in front of more than eight thousand of its supporters and advanced 3-1 on aggregate. Ibrahim Said scored both goals in the return leg.
The results give a good picture of Motherwell's current form:
- Havnar Bóltfelag - two wins and 5-0 on aggregate in the second qualifying round
- HJK Helsinki - 1-1 away and a 2-0 win at Fir Park
- Hibernian - a 2-1 win in the first league round
- Falkirk - 0-0 in the first home league match of the season
Motherwell had four points after the first two league rounds. More importantly for this European match, the team has already been playing competitive matches for several weeks. Freiburg is only now entering the official part of its season, so the home side may have the advantage of competitive rhythm in the first match.
Johansson took over Motherwell in June. The Swedish coach arrived after working at Rosenborg, and his start in Scotland has been marked by a team that tries to play actively and quickly forward instead of simply waiting for an opponent's mistake.
Ibrahim Said and Tawanda Maswanhise carry the biggest threat
In the return leg against HJK, Ibrahim Said showed why Freiburg will have to pay particular attention to the space around its penalty area. For the first goal he started from the left, moved inside, went through the defensive block and finished the move. For the second, he again found space for a vertical attack and used it before the Finnish defence could organise itself.
Said opened the season with three goals in his first five starts for Motherwell.
Alongside him, the biggest name in attack is Tawanda Maswanhise. The Zimbabwe international is coming off an outstanding 2025/26 season in which he scored 22 goals in 44 matches for Motherwell and won the Scottish Premiership top-scorer title. Motherwell uses him both through the middle and from wide areas, and his ability to accelerate after receiving the ball is particularly important when the opponent leaves space behind its full-backs.
Lukas Fadinger is another player worth watching. The Austrian midfielder started the new season well and already put together a run of three consecutive matches with a goal in July. Against HJK, Motherwell also got a lot from Emmanuel Longelo, whose runs down the left broke the Finnish team's defensive structure several times.
That means Freiburg does not have to stop only one attacker. Motherwell can attack through Maswanhise, Said's movements inside, Longelo's forward runs and the arrivals of midfielders from deeper positions.
SC Freiburg arrives as a team accustomed to a much higher European level
Freiburg's previous season completely changes the context of this tie. The German club finished seventh in the Bundesliga, but at the same time made a deep European run and reached the Europa League final. Aston Villa won the final 3-0.
The team is still led by Julian Schuster. Captain Christian Günter enters his seventh season wearing the captain's armband, while Maximilian Eggestein and Vincenzo Grifo remain vice-captains.
Freiburg has several players with extensive Bundesliga and European-match experience. Matthias Ginter and Philipp Lienhart provide experience in central defence, Günter brings forward runs and crosses from the left, while Grifo has for years been one of the club's most dangerous players when he finds space around the opponent's penalty area.
In attack, Julian Schuster can use Lucas Höler, Igor Matanović, Cyriaque Irié and Keisuke Goto, while Niklas Beste and Yuito Suzuki provide additional creativity.
Unlike Motherwell, Freiburg has not yet played a competitive match in the new season. Before the trip to Scotland, its pre-season programme included a 3-1 win against Derby County, a 3-0 defeat to SpVgg Greuther Fürth and two matches against Racing Strasbourg, both of which Freiburg won 2-0.
After Motherwell, Freiburg visits Fortuna Düsseldorf on 23 August in the first round of the German Cup, while it opens its Bundesliga campaign at home against Werder on 30 August. The first match at Fir Park is therefore not just another stop in pre-season - it is the beginning of Freiburg's competitive season.
Freiburg's play down the flanks could be a key problem
The two wins against Racing Strasbourg provided several useful indications of where Freiburg can be particularly dangerous.
In one match, Vincenzo Grifo created space by moving in from the left, while Igor Matanović won a penalty after a pass from Cyriaque Irié, which Grifo converted. In the other match, Lucas Höler scored both goals with headers - the first after a set piece and a delivery from Niklas Beste, the second after a precise cross from Christian Günter.
For Motherwell, the message is very clear. The defence must not allow Freiburg easy crossing situations or unnecessary set pieces around the penalty area.
At the same time, the German team will have to control the home side's transition. Against HJK, Motherwell showed that a few seconds of space can be enough for Said's and Maswanhise's forward runs.
Four details that could decide the first match
- Can Motherwell maintain the high intensity it showed against HJK and force Freiburg into mistakes in the early phase of build-up?
- How much space will Said and Maswanhise get when Freiburg's wide players move forward?
- Can Motherwell limit crosses from Günter and Beste as well as Freiburg's set pieces?
- How much difference will it make that Motherwell already has a run of competitive matches behind it, while Freiburg is only beginning its official season?
Johansson already has the core of the team that got past HJK
Against HJK, Motherwell started with Alex Paulsen in goal. Johnny Koutroumbis, Jake Girdwood-Reich, David Moormann and Emmanuel Longelo formed the defensive line, while the rest of the starting line-up included Oscar Priestman, Lukas Fadinger, Alex Lowry, Tawanda Maswanhise, Regan Charles-Cook and Ibrahim Said.
That continuity could be important. Johansson did not have to search for a way of playing during the European qualifiers - his team's key mechanisms have already been used under pressure.
Tom Sparrow missed the return leg against HJK after previously having to leave the league match against Falkirk. The player's final status for Freiburg has not yet been announced. Johnny Koutroumbis, who had previously experienced problems with a hand injury, returned to the starting line-up against HJK.
Regan Charles-Cook and Alex Lowry had problems with cramp after the first match against HJK, which is why they did not start against Falkirk, but both returned to the starting line-up for the European return leg. That is an important indication that their earlier absence from the team did not automatically mean a more serious injury.
A more detailed medical report for both squads is expected closer to the match, so it is not useful to declare players unavailable in advance without confirmation.
Fir Park is a small stadium where the stands remain very close to the pitch
Motherwell has played at Fir Park since 1895. The stadium has gone through several major phases of reconstruction, and today's layout consists of four stands: Phil O'Donnell Stand, John Hunter Stand, Tommy McLean Stand and Davie Cooper Stand.
Motherwell FC lists a seated capacity of approximately 13,750. Tommy McLean Stand is the largest individual stand and can accommodate around 4,500 spectators.
For European nights, what happens when the stadium fills up is much more important than the capacity figure itself. More than 8,000 Motherwell supporters were at Fir Park against HJK, and the noise grew as the home team put the opponent under pressure. When Said scored the first goal early in the second half, the match turned completely in the home side's favour.
Freiburg is accustomed to larger stadiums, but Fir Park offers a different type of match - the stands are close to the pitch, and a European qualifying match with very clear stakes gives the crowd a reason to react to every duel and every set piece won.
Seats in the stands are disappearing quickly. For a supporter planning a trip to Motherwell, it makes sense to arrange the ticket and transport before the final days leading up to the match.
Getting to Fir Park - what should be planned in advance
Fir Park is located in Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, in central Scotland. For visitors arriving from other cities, rail is one of the more practical options because the area has Motherwell and Airbles stations.
ScotRail has direct connections between Motherwell and Airbles, but the timetable should be checked for the specific matchday. Visitors coming from the wider Glasgow City Region can also use Motherwell as the main rail hub before continuing towards the stadium.
For drivers, it is important not to assume that parking immediately next to the stadium will be easily available. North Lanarkshire Council lists Pollock Street and Motherwell Park & Ride East and West among the town's parking options, while restrictions and availability should be checked before arrival.
A practical plan for matchday:
- The stadium address is Fir Park, Motherwell, ML1 2QN.
- If arriving by train, check the current timetable for Motherwell and Airbles before travelling.
- If arriving by car, choose a parking option in advance and expect heavier traffic around kick-off.
- Arrive earlier than for a normal league match because European fixtures attract larger crowds and create additional pressure around the stadium.
- The exact opening time of the gates for the match against Freiburg has not yet been announced, so it should be checked when Motherwell publishes detailed matchday information.
For the previous European match against HJK, the club specifically advised supporters to arrive early because of the large attendance. That is also a reasonable guideline for Freiburg, but specific traffic notices may change by 20 August.
Motherwell is more than a stop on the way to Glasgow
For travellers from outside Scotland, Motherwell is primarily an industrial town in North Lanarkshire with strong rail links to larger centres. The town's football identity is tied to a club that has existed since 1886 and to Fir Park, located close enough to the urban centre that a matchday does not require a long transfer to a stadium on the outskirts.
Supporters arriving only for the match can organise their trip around the rail connections and the stadium, while those staying longer have easy connections to Glasgow and other parts of central Scotland.
For travelling Freiburg supporters, it is particularly important to leave enough time after arriving in the wider Glasgow area. European away trips often put greater pressure on local transport immediately before kick-off, and the final part of the journey towards Fir Park is not the moment for a tight schedule.
Why Freiburg cannot treat Motherwell as a formality
On paper, the German club has a deeper squad, greater experience from one of Europe's strongest leagues and fresh experience of a European final. That still does not mean the first match is merely an introduction to the return leg.
Motherwell finished last league season in fourth place, and the current qualifiers have shown that it can control a match when it has the support of Fir Park. Against HJK, it did not simply wait for a chance from a set piece or an opponent's mistake. The team created overloads on the flanks, entered the final third with several players and continued attacking after taking the lead.
Maswanhise's output from the previous season further changes the way Freiburg has to prepare for the match. A forward who scored 22 club goals and won the league Golden Boot is not a player who can regularly be left space in one-on-one situations.
Freiburg, however, has an answer in the experience of players such as Ginter, Lienhart, Günter and Grifo. Their ability to control the rhythm, win set pieces and punish the defence with quality deliveries could be the biggest test for the home side.
The atmosphere should be completely different from an ordinary league evening
Motherwell only secured this tie against HJK, so the time between the two European matches is short. That helps preserve the feeling that the qualifying campaign has not stopped.
For the home supporters, the opponent brings additional weight. Freiburg is not an anonymous team from the early qualifying rounds, but a club that played in a European final only a few months earlier. For the travelling supporters, this is the beginning of a new European season and Freiburg's first competitive away match of the 2026/27 campaign.
Ticket sales for this match are under way. It is worth securing tickets in good time, especially because the interest following the elimination of HJK comes at a moment when Motherwell gets a home opponent of a completely different profile.
What to watch in the days before the match
Several pieces of information may still change before kick-off. Motherwell has domestic commitments before Freiburg, while Freiburg is completing its pre-season programme before the competitive part of the season begins.
The most useful things to follow are:
- final information on Tom Sparrow's availability and any new absences
- Freiburg's choice of striker and the roles of Grifo, Günter and Beste in the final preparation
- the publication of detailed matchday information for Fir Park, especially gate-opening times and traffic instructions
- any changes to public transport and parking in Motherwell
- the line-ups immediately before kick-off, because both coaches have several options in attacking positions
The first match will not decide the entire playoff, but it can completely change the conditions for the return leg in Freiburg. Motherwell wants to carry the energy from the victory over HJK into another European night at Fir Park, while Freiburg must show whether it can immediately turn its higher individual quality into control of the match after the summer preparations.
