OFI Crete - CSKA Sofia: the first battle for a place in the league phase

OFI Crete and CSKA Sofia meet in Heraklion in the first leg of the Europa League play-off, and the stakes are completely clear: the winner of the two-legged tie advances to the league phase of the competition. The return leg is a week later in Sofia, so the result from Pankritio Stadium will directly determine what approach both teams will have to take in the second match.

For OFI, this is the first European contest of the season. It secured its place in this round by winning the 2025-26 Greek Cup, in which it defeated PAOK 3-2 after extra time in the final. Christos Kontis's team therefore enters directly into the play-off, while CSKA Sofia has already overcome three hurdles and arrives in Heraklion with six European matches under its belt.

OFI arrives after a trophy and an emotional test against AEK Athens

The freshest competitive indicator of OFI's form is not a friendly match but the Greek Super Cup. In Heraklion on 12 August, OFI drew 2-2 against AEK Athens and then won the trophy with a better penalty shootout performance, 5-4. Such a match is also important for assessing this European evening because Kontis already used the core of the team that could also be important against CSKA Sofia.

Against AEK, OFI started with Nikos Christogeorgos in goal, three centre-backs Achilleas Poungouras, Christos Sielis and Konstantinos Kostoulas, while Giannis Apostolakis and Nikos Athanasiou occupied the wide positions. Zisis Karachalios and Thanasis Androutsos were in midfield, with Taxiarchis Fountas, Aitor Cantalapiedra and Thiago Nuss further forward.

Androutsos was particularly important. He scored to make it 1-1, and Kostoulas completed the turnaround a few minutes later. AEK equalised deep into stoppage time, but OFI remained composed in the shootout, while Christogeorgos saved the crucial penalty. This is a good indication that the hosts enter this match with recent experience of intense result-related pressure.

CSKA went through 5-4, helped by an important save from goalkeeper Fedor Lapoukhov.

The third round against Maccabi Tel-Aviv was even more unusual. CSKA won the first match 3-0, then lost the return leg in Sofia 1-3 and advanced 4-3 on aggregate. Stefano Sensi scored in the return leg, while Ioannis Pittas, Leandro Godoy and Joël Zwarts have been among the most important attacking names during the European campaign so far.

In the domestic league, CSKA was third after four rounds with 10 points, recording three wins and one draw and a goal difference of 8-3. The final league match before the return leg against Maccabi ended in a 3-0 away victory at Septemvri Sofia. Pittas scored from the penalty spot, Godoy found the net after coming on, and the third goal was credited to Isaac Solet.

CSKA therefore should not be judged only through the 1-3 defeat in its latest European appearance. Yanev's team has already come through an open tie, two goalless matches and a return leg in which it had to defend a significant lead.

CSKA Sofia players worth watching

Ioannis Pittas is currently CSKA Sofia's most productive European scorer. In the registered European squad, he has three goals in six appearances. His movement between the centre-backs and willingness to attack space could cause problems for OFI if the home side's wide players stay high.

Stefano Sensi brings experience and composure in possession. He has already scored in European qualifying, while his set-piece delivery and ability to find vertical passes help CSKA avoid depending solely on transitions. Bruno Jordão has also scored in qualifying, while Godoy provides a physical presence at the top of the attack.

Fedor Lapoukhov has already played a crucial role against Qarabağ. The tie finished goalless, and the CSKA goalkeeper saved a penalty in the shootout.

Tactical battle: OFI's width against CSKA's three-at-the-back structure

Kontis has shown a preference in recent matches for a system with three centre-backs and active wide players. That setup allows Apostolakis and Athanasiou to push higher, while Fountas and Nuss look for space closer to the penalty area. Against AEK, OFI was able to threaten both through combinations down the flanks and through midfielders arriving from deeper positions.

OFI will want to push its wide players forward at home, while CSKA has enough pace and experience to attack the space behind them.

If both wide players remain high, Karachalios and Androutsos must quickly close the centre so that Pittas does not receive early balls into space. On the other hand, CSKA will have to watch Nuss and Fountas between the lines, especially if Sensi starts pushing forward more aggressively.

Set pieces are the other major theme. Kostoulas scored with a header after a free kick against AEK, while Sensi offers quality delivery at the other end. In a two-legged tie where everything does not have to be decided in Heraklion, teams often take fewer risks from open play, so a corner or free kick can become the clearest chance of the evening.

Absences and squad situation

At the time of checking, OFI's clearest recorded absentee is Fotis Koutsoupias, who is listed with a serious knee injury. For CSKA Sofia, Ángelo Martino is listed as a concern with a muscle injury. The stadium was built for major international events in the early 2000s and today is OFI's main venue for matches requiring a larger capacity.

For this match, entry arrangements have already been divided by sections. Supporters for stands 1, 2 and 3 use entrance A on the western side, while entrance B on the southern side, next to the Lido indoor arena, is used for stands 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19 and 20. OFI returns to the pitch where it has just won a trophy. The penalty shootout victory against AEK created a strong opening to the season, and the European play-off comes before the start of the domestic league.

CSKA Sofia has already survived a shootout against Qarabağ and a dramatic return leg against Maccabi Tel-Aviv. It arrives in Heraklion with proof that it knows how to play two-legged ties in which the score fluctuates.

That is why the first goal is particularly important. An OFI lead could ignite the stadium and force CSKA to abandon a more controlled plan. An away goal would have the opposite effect: the hosts would have to chase the result before travelling to Sofia. In a two-legged tie without the need for an immediate all-out offensive, patience will be almost as important as quality in the final third.

It is worth securing tickets in time because this is the only home match separating OFI from the Europa League league phase.
