Pafos FC - Salzburg: narrow advantage leaves the return leg completely open
Pafos FC and Salzburg go into the second leg of the Europa League third qualifying round with a very simple calculation: the Austrian team brings a 1-0 advantage to Limassol, but the first encounter did not show a difference that would force the home side to change its entire game plan. Salzburg had more possession and more chances in the first match, but they scored the only goal only in the 88th minute through Haris Tabakovic.
The return leg will be played at Alphamega Stadium in Limassol, where kick-off will be at 20:00 local time. Pafos FC has already used this stadium for European home matches, and the return in front of the home crowd now comes after a match in Salzburg that was suspended for approximately two hours because of heavy rain.
There is no room for Pafos to wait too long, but there is also no need to open the match in panic. One goal wipes out the Austrian advantage. Salzburg, on the other hand, can use situations in which the home side will have to take increasing risks as the match progresses.

The 1-0 result does not tell the whole story of the match in Salzburg. The home side had 59 percent possession, compared with Pafos' 41 percent, and three shots on target compared with one for the visitors. Salzburg also created two big chances, while Pafos had one. Still, the closing stages showed how sensitive this tie is to a single situation. Pafos had periods in the second half in which they managed to escape the pressure and threaten, and the score remained 0-0 until the 88th minute. Then Haris Tabakovic, who came off the bench in the 70th minute, scored to make it 1-0.
The match also had an unusual course. Because of heavy rain, play was stopped after about 15 minutes, and it resumed around two hours later. Such an interruption makes it harder to read the rhythm of the match, but several facts remain useful ahead of the return leg:

Radosław Majecki will be an important final safeguard, while in front of him David Goldar and David Luiz bring experience to the centre of defence. Ivan Šunjić has an important role in the space in front of the centre-backs, especially when Salzburg try to find their attacking midfielders between the lines.
Vlad Dragomir is one of the players from whom Pafos will demand more in moving the ball forward. In Salzburg, he had a headed attempt from a good position in the second half, and it will be especially important for the home side that the midfield does not remain too deep. If Pafos only defend their own penalty area, Salzburg will once again get a large number of attacks, crosses and set pieces.
Salzburg under Danny Röhl have the advantage, but no room to relax
Danny Röhl took over Salzburg during the summer and goes into the European return leg with an advantage on the scoreboard. The Austrian team also opened its domestic season with a 1-0 victory against Hartberg before defeating Pafos by the same score.
The first match gave several indications of how Röhl wants to use his squad. Salzburg started in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Yorbe Vertessen up front and Damir Redzic, Gaoussou Diakité and Edmund Baidoo behind him. Changes arrived in the second half that ultimately decided the match.
Karim Konaté came on for Vertessen, while Tabakovic replaced Baidoo. It was Tabakovic who made the difference late on. For Pafos, this is a warning that the danger does not disappear if they manage to neutralise Salzburg's starting line-up. Röhl has the option of changing the profile of the attack without changing the basic objective.
In Limassol, Salzburg will probably try to avoid a match that immediately turns into an open exchange of attacks. The result allows them to be more patient. The home side must score, so spaces for counter-attacks may naturally appear as time passes.

Such a result changes the tactics more than the formation
Pafos started in a 4-3-3 formation in Salzburg, while the home side used a 4-2-3-1. There is no guarantee that the coaches will repeat the same starting formations, but the demands created by the result are quite clear.
Sá Pinto must find a balance between early pressure and protecting the defence. A goal in the opening few minutes would be the ideal scenario for the home side, but sending both full-backs forward too aggressively would open space for Salzburg's transitions.
It will be particularly important how Pafos build from the first phase of attack. If Majecki, the centre-backs and Šunjić manage to bypass the visitors' initial press, Pafos can attack the space behind Salzburg's midfield. If they are forced into long clearances without controlling the second ball, the visitors will find it much easier to calm the match down.
Salzburg can play a different type of match. The team does not have to chase the result. It can occasionally allow Pafos more of the ball and then use the speed of its attacking players when the home side loses possession.
That, however, is not an invitation for Salzburg to retreat in front of their own penalty area. Ricardo Sá Pinto took over Pafos FC at the end of April 2026 and continued to lead the team in the 2026/27 season. The Portuguese coach knows Cypriot football, and his team already went through an extremely stressful return leg in the previous round after losing the first match.
Danny Röhl became Salzburg coach in June 2026. His situation in Limassol is almost the opposite: the result allows him to react to what Pafos do instead of having to force a change in the aggregate score from the first minute.
That is exactly why the first 20 to 25 minutes could be particularly interesting. Pafos will want to show initiative in front of their supporters, but an early Salzburg goal would force the home side to look for at least two. Salzburg will know that every well-executed escape from pressure can completely change the psychology of the match.
Alphamega Stadium gives Pafos a familiar European setting
The return leg will be played at Alphamega Stadium in Kolossi, in the wider Limassol area. The stadium opened in 2022 and has 10,830 seats. Its address is Spirou Kiprianou 74, 4632 Kolossi, Limassol.
Pafos FC uses it for its bigger European home matches, so the team is already familiar with the pitch and match organisation at this venue. Limassol before and after the match
Limassol is one of the largest cities in Cyprus and an important tourist and business centre on the island's southern coast. The first question will be how high Pafos can press Salzburg without opening space behind their midfielders. The second is whether Salzburg can once again turn possession into a large number of entries into the final third. The third is how Sá Pinto will compensate for Ken Sema's absence.
It is also worth watching how Salzburg use Tabakovic. After he came on in the 70th minute of the first match and scored in the 88th, coach Röhl has a choice between a similar plan with the striker as a later trump card or a different starting line-up.
Pafos must be more clinical than in Salzburg, but they do not have to solve everything in the first ten minutes. One goal is enough to level the aggregate score again. It is precisely that fine line between the need to attack and the need for patience that should shape the entire evening in Limassol.
